      Yes, this 👍🏼. If we want desktop Linux to be more successful we have to be willing to invest in it and the people spending their time developing it. At the end of the day, any money we can contribute to Linux is still going to be less than a Windows or Mac license/hardware tax. And there’s still room for folks who can’t afford it to still get a free beer version and contribute in other ways like giving support.

    Hello:
    Very good video.
    Zorin Os 17 Pro looks and feels great. The focus it has is for professional but it is also multipurpose, so it is within reach of any novice.
    It is a good way to fund the project. I agree with you that they could reward the most loyal supporters by giving them a discount if they already have the previous Pro version.
    Have a Happy New Year 2024.

    I got a previous pro version for $39, and I figured it was fine because I considered it as support for the developers, and not necessarily price for the value of an upgrade. I actually ended up paying more since tax was not included. I see now that the $48 figure now includes tax.

    I chose Zorin Pro because a RUclips review showed the install was easy, I wanted the pre installed curated software and I wanted to support the Zorin team. I wanted something that I could use immediately and then gradually learn about the Linux world. It worked out better than expected. I stopped dual booting within a couple of weeks - and that was just to copy files over - not to use any apps. Zorin made the switch from windows smooth and quick. I left windows because of the increasing amount of ads, background processes and pop ups.

      @@dasgeek Honestly, considering you can get Windows key for less than $10 I'm afraid there's nothing they can do. $48 is just roughly what you pay for brand new, shiny AAA game and even than they get discounted to half price. Don't get me wrong, it looks good but there's nothing on Linux that's worth that much money.

    • @Crystawth
      @Crystawth Год назад +4

      Honestly, I agree that there isn't much that they could really do to make it worth $48. I feel like the only reason anyone would be willing to pay this is if they deliberately wanted to support the project financially. there's nothing wrong with that, people donate and support projects all the time. There just really isn't much incentive to purchase outside of that. The thing about Linux is that you can do whatever you want to it to make it do anything you want without paying that $48.
      I think a more appropriate price would be $25.

    • @dasgeek
      @dasgeek  Год назад +1

      @@Crystawth fair points, I agree that most people are just paying it to support the project, not for the benefits. I also think that $25 is a better starting point. However, if they donated some of the funds to the projects that make up Zorin, I think it would go a long way.

    Just about to install Zorin OS Pro right now. $48 is steep seeing as you can get a Windows 11 OEM License for about $30-$40. I would assume that if they dropped the price more people might be able to justify the cost and rather it go to Open Source communities like you said rather than to M$.

  • @armagedon515
    @armagedon515 Год назад +15

    Thanks for the video. 48$US is way too steep. Btw you can make the free version (Lite) looks like the PRO with simple tweaking. They use gnome extensions which are free. (Ark Menu) The pre-installed programs in the PRO version can also be install in the free one. Beside that I can't find any differences.

      @@ppmnox Ubuntu base is the best in my opinion because it has the most app ecosystem compatibility, it can run snaps, flatpaks, apt, homebrew, etc… The other distros can run snaps but with issues. Personally, I prefer to install the dev version of the app, and sometimes the dev choose snap over flatpak. Desktop wise I prefer vanilla Gnome with a few tweaks. I start with Ubuntu server, remove server stuff, and install vanilla gnome. I’m always one update version behind. Zorin downside is you can run into issues with app compatibility and less secured due to very old kernel and ubuntu base they use. But those trade offs are worthy for someone less savvy, or that the apps they use work just fine.

    I had been using Zorin OS 16.3 Pro on an older laptop as Windows 10 and 11 were slowing things down, so I was excited to see the release of 17 Pro, and was invited through a link for an early upgrade path, but less excited when I realised I had to pay again (although there was a small loyalty discount). Sorry, but for purchasers of the previous version, is it too much to ask for a 50% discount to keep us loyal? I've reinstalled to Zorin OS 17 now, but core, not pro, so that's one Pro customer they've lost, but I'm still sticking with Zorin, as it really is an excellent distro, and great video 🙂

    I didn't know of Pipe Wire before this video. I said screw it, might as well install it. I'm using a laptop and the sound with Pulse was muddy through the laptop speakers. After setting it live, I lost my audio. Its important to restart even in Linux lol. When my computer restarted, the audio is a lot cleaner, the muddiness is gone. So thank you for taking about it! As far as Zorin as a whole, I wish I could calibrate the monitor (Needs a little more saturation). But as a whole, I have not liked a Linux Distro this much. I have supported Zorin for years now. I bought 16 pro when it came out for $39 USD and have bought it 4 times in the past. When I saw that it was $48 USD I have hesitated from purchasing it. At one point it was only $14 for the pro. I really think that they should give past buyers a break in the price. The fact that they decided to wait until almost time for a new LTS to come out to release this also makes me hesitate in even using core. I have played with 17 beta and core release and it is beautiful but coming from Fedora workstation using Gnome 45 to going back to Gnome 43 with parts of gnome 44 and 45 mixed in could work if I really wanted it to but since the base is considered old, why would I? I think they should have just waited until 24.04 came out and based Zorin on that. Now I would have to wait almost 2 years before they do so.

    mmm... unfortunately there will not be a rush to Linux from Mac or Windows, I've been involved with linux since 2004, there's never been a mass exodus to Linux. It won't happen unless people are forced to like in Russia with all the sanctions, Russians have had to move over to alternatives which is a good thing because since the sanctions on Russia the dev updates and improvements have exploded

    so you pay $48 per seat for a Desktop you can create and customise yourself in Ubuntu... Am I missing something?, you're not really getting anything extra if you're paying. So it's a donation, why not just be honest
