See, amtrak, when they fuck up, they put you in a 4 star hotel for free.
Greyhound, when they fuck up, they dump ya at the side of the road and hope you don't live to tell people about it.

Honestly, this makes me feel better about Greyhound completely abandoning my home of Western Canada. Because evidently no service isn’t really that far below the customer service situation in the US.
It seems like there are more functional companies that picked up the slack too!
I rode E-bus from Kelowna to Vancouver a couple months ago- we had the usual traffic delays, but everything went smoothly otherwise. The drivers seemed professional. Not much of a sample size, being just a 5-hour trip, but there were definitely no experiences like anything in this video.
@@Lafv Yeah E-bus are fairly decent, they just don’t nearly cover what Greyhound used to
“Rescue a bus” means that one greyhound broke down somewhere, & that a driver from the nearest big region had to drive his bus out to where that other one was, & pkup (“rescue”) those passengers who were stuck/stranded to help get them back on their way.
Also, a driver that “ran out of hours” means that they are given a certain amount of time … each way, to do their trip, & then legally they have to go & find somewhere to rest. After they get a 8Hr rest, they’re meant to be bk at it again, heading bk in their opposite direction to get them bk to their home/origin station …. Of which now they’re refreshed, they have another 6Hrs (ish) to drive bk that other way. ….
Their schedule (at least when they serviced up in Canada b4 pulling t plug) was one way a-b one day; then b-a on day two. Sometimes another route (from a-b & bk on) on other days, & then after 4 days straight from being on, they get 3 days straight off.
& since you’ve travelled multiple trips across country… Here’s a random one for your GF from in that Seattle video. …. “What do you call 4 days one way on a bus?!?” ….. {‘Grave’Hound!! …. ESP when u lv your seats to go outside at a rest stop after u got a minimal sleep.}
& Yes, I agree with her too… After a 4 day bus ride; a hotel bed Does! feel WWWAAAYYY!!! Better than even in the most comfiest way you can be in a bus seat.
As someone who can't sleep on a bus this would be how the FBI gets me to talk.

You know you're in for the long run...when the driver doesn't even know where the Greyhound stop for Norristown is, someone is left behind because the driver left a minute early at a random stop in the middle of nowhere, and paramedics are called at a locked bus station in Denver. You might not have completed the journey on the same bus, but at least you got to stop for your Auntie Anne's somewhere and enjoyed the incredible views in Colorado and Utah! Speaking like Gollum when you finally reached Colorado at 12:02 is priceless. Yup, the Gateway Arch is bigger than you think! It's the tallest monument in the whole Western Hemisphere! It's 630 feet tall and is 75 feet taller than the Washington Monument!
It's the smallest park in the NPS system with the designation National Park (but Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial in Philly is the smallest unit in the NPS system in general), when it was redesignated and renamed from the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in 2018. Honestly a National Monument, which is what the Statue of Liberty is, is a better designation for it because the status of a full-on National Park is meant to be land set aside to protecting the country's different kinds of gorgeous landscapes what you saw in Utah. But I still think it's an incredible engineering feat! Especially its unique elevator tram using Ferris wheel elements designed by Richard Bowser. He worked on elevator equipment with his father! He visited an elevator company in Moline, IL to see a friend when by chance, the company got a call from Eero Saarinen that they were looking for a group to take on the big project. Bowser made a return call. When Eero called back, he gave Bowser two weeks to design and present in front of the team
Sad to say that as of the writing of this comment, the routes from NY to LA are no more. The last published Greyhound timetable I could find with any of the routes was from November '22; the December '22 timetable removes any mention of them.
I had a 4 day trip, Chicago to Salt Lake City. Because it was last minute, the only routes available took me clear down south to Texas, west to California, then north to Reno and finally east to Salt Lake. I only lasted till Dallas. Got a flight back to Salt Lake that night and never looking back. Normally, I would take Amtrak. Except my train was cancelled. Hopefully my train never gets cancelled again. I can handle a late train... there just needs to be a train.

people complain about the passengers, but it's the company that's the worst. I kinda want them to go bankrupt so the government is forced to provide real transportation, not the BS about how private industry is always better. you can't really do worse than greyhound

@@Natalie-hg3ghMaybe. I would guess there are quite a few cities now that built up around highways and have no rail access at all, making non-drivers there trapped if there's no intercity bus
Come to Ontario and take Ontario Northland all the way to Timmins, (I'd say it's just as bad as greyhound) or even better the polar bear express to Churchill, Manitoba.
Miles, I did it in the mid 70's on a Greyhound AMERA PASS , or Trailways EAGLE PASS .
Greyhound had a form of unlimited pass until 2012, I believe. I wish there still was one!
@@MilesinTransit Discovery Pass during the 2000s. Had up to 60 days unlimited bus travel for I think $499. Pass came in increments of 7/14/30/60 days. The Amtrak equivalent USA Rail Pass wasn't as good given it limits you to a certain number of segments and counts each ride as a segment (so NYC to LA is a minimum of 2 there). The way to do it back then was get both and use the Greyhound pass for the journeys Amtrak couldn't do.
When I was a kid, my grandmother lived in Forest Hills and I lived in Central Jersey. She would take the subway to midtown and get a bus called the Lincoln Limited (Continental Trailways), which took her to East Brunswick where my mom would pick her up. That was before NJ Transit existed. That bus ride always amazed me, so I can't imagine going across the country. Kudos to you guys.
My mom sent my brother and I from key West Florida back to Boston by Greyhound bus! We were just little kids and we're getting grabbed in touched by a drunk guy on the bus until an older black lady came to our rescue. My brother jokes that my mom is a narcissist but obviously that was a case for her to send us from tip of the farthest place on a continental United States to all the way back up north!

Many thanks for doing this, and for posting about it, here and on Twitter. The experience of the scenery and the cities was fascinating; I hope to see more of them. The customer "service" from Greyhound was dreadful, and makes entirely clear why they have such a bad reputation, even for me on the other side of the Atlantic.

Loving these videos teaching me things like apparently in the northeast rest stops have like… food and things to buy inside them. I’m used to them being literally toilets and a place to park and stretch your legs

In my opinion it's best to do these long for the journey trips for June/July for the extra sunlight.
I've taken Greyhound from Seattle to LA and from Florida to Maine. I've done my time.
I took a simple bus from NYC to Atlantic City, and it was 4 hours late! 2 other busses to Atlantic City arrived and left, Greyhound's policy is to give a refund after 2 hours, we didn't get any money back, and the people who track the buses say that they couldn't track it 🫠. They also said that it was on the Jersey Turnpike and that it would arrive at 12:30. They said that at 2:30!

I give you guys a lot of credit for taking Greyhound long distance. I only took it once five years ago from Baltimore to NYC and while it wasn't terrible but I would not say it was particularly pleasant. Also: Kansas City is usually pretty hopping.... Not sure which 'hood you were in but it deff merits a return visit!

Actually you have it backwards>The City of Los Angeles is approximately 472 square miles in size, with a population of 3,694,820. The City of New York is 304 square miles in size, and has a population of 8,008,278. My trip was even longer I went from San Francisco to Boston, 94 hours long and ten hours late. I flew back to San Francisco.
I meant in terms of population! SF to Boston is an epic trip.

Unfortunately not - we did ride all of Metrolink but I only took photos, and those have since been lost! Next time I'm in LA maybe I'll try again, in video form this time...

It was a bus station in Downtown Las Vegas, close to Fremont Street. It looks like it's moved somewhere south of the airport now? That's insane!
Correct. It has moved down to the Regional Transit Authority's South Strip Transit Terminal which has little of interest nearby. Good news is that you've got plenty of city buses to get you out of there. FlixBus and Salt Lake Express also operate from there. Pro tip: if doing Salt Lake Express opt to catch it at the airport instead.

I was a Greyhound rider across the country for a good solid decade before I got turned on to Amtrak. Interestingly in the years since, Greyhound pulled out of the Chicago to Denver via Omaha route, nixing all service to Iowa and Nebraska, and more recently cut its service between Reno and Salt Lake City. Greyhound will utilize connections with other carriers and even Amtrak to serve these and other areas, but for longer cross-country trips 'The Dog' will route you hundreds of miles out of the way to keep you in the Greyhound system. Try booking a trip online from Sacramento to Salt Lake City, then compare that to a trip booked from Sacramento to Green River, Utah. That Amtrak connection in Reno you would take to get to Salt Lake City also goes to Green River, but Greyhound won't let you use that.
Their booking system is awful - and once Flixbus takes over in late February, it's going to get even more expensive and indirect!

Greyhound gives you a free ticket anywhere in the country once you get a certain number of Road Rewards points!

This is why I'm looking into emigrating to Europe somewhere. Somewhere with modern infrastructure that people just expect to work instead of one major political party calling any infrastructure project (EXCEPT roads) as "communism".
I must say Nathan is a good looking guy. As for greyhound what a shit service all round. This company would have been shut-down years ago if it was in Australia.
How does Greyhound Australia compare?
@MilesinTransit Australian Greyhound generally runs on time and operates well maintained modern coaches on very long distance routes. They certainly don't leave you waiting outside for unknown amounts of time like in the USA. The staff are professional and offer good customer service. Some of the routes also receive government subsidies especially in Queensland. Greyhound in Australia does not operate its own bus terminals or ticket offices its very much a phone and online booking system today. The bus terminals and stops are maintained by the state governments.
As for the passengers its a zero tolerance policy to anti social behaviour. If your drunk or on drugs and disruptive to others on board the police will arrest you and no refunds offered for being removed from the bus.
You guys sound like brainwashed at the end. I guess the good thing is you racked up some mileage.
Nothing is ever free
You guys want to really push the envelope? Try taking a Greyhound solo across country or even halfway across like NYC to Chicago. I'm not picking on Greyhound because it is not their fault what wild characters take their bus. I saw all kinds of stuff including smelly passengers and what looked like some immigration official check our bus out and weird passengers. It was crazy. Greyhound does the best they can but again they take whoever pays for a ticket.
Honestly the problem is less with the people and more with the delays and terrible facilities - and especially recently as they've been selling their stations, cutting service, and treating their drivers even worse than they did before, I have to put most of the blame on Greyhound here.
