    Japanese take anything and make it more elegant. They refine the heck out of whatever is asimilated into their culture. Amazing people indded.

      Well this is the Japanese version of the Vedic (and Proto Indo-European) "Homa" fire ritual or "Yagna" as it's called in Sanskrit. It obviously percolated into Japan with the Indian Buddhist missionaries.
      But still, the vedic and tantric Homa are elegant in it's own way. For starters, they way more complicated. The mudras (i.e. the hand gestures) they are using become way more complicated in Hinduism.

    Shingon Buddhism stems from Vajrayana.........This fire ritual is done in Tibet also but on a grander scale.
    The Vajrayana of Japan comes from China and that from India, not Tibet however.

      This ritual is quite similar to the Hindu practice of Homa, but offerings are made to various deities (Indra, Surya, Agni, Vayu, Varuna, etc.). And we use ghee and herbs to make offerings into the fire. Here, I think the priest is offering prayer sticks, oil, and a certain type of leaf.

    • @NikaBoyce
      @NikaBoyce 6 лет назад +3

      Maulin Agrawal yes... reminds me of brahmin priests sitting at and tending the sacred fire. Perhaps it is a link back to an older syncretic form of buddhism that retained those fire related purity forms.

      The Seattle Koyasan Temple has a statement on their web site concerning the goma fire ritual: "The fire symbolizes the wisdom of the Buddha and the wood sticks symbolize human desires (the root of suffering). In this ritual, the Buddha burns away the root of our suffering as we pray for our wishes to come true."
