    Fun fact! Your second cryptid isn’t actually derivative of the Windigo at all! The idea of the deer antlers is a misconception derived from tourist traps appropriating the original Indigenous tales for profit. The actual Windigo is described as an emaciated and pale human
    Also you should definitely make a sequel to this, loved these drawings

      Is there a way to make a character _INSPIRED_ on a wendigo without it being cultural appropriation? I was thinking about making a character with a skull on its head, glowing eyes and anthropomorfic proportions. Its body is made out of wood and mane out of leaves and it protects the forest. Is this cultural appropriation? Thanks.

    • @sharksuperiority9736
      @sharksuperiority9736 2 года назад +32

      @@gone9820 As long as you don’t call it a Windigo, and just treat it as a character design of your own, then I would say no. You’re just taking inspiration from art you saw.
      However, I am not the person to ask. If you want a real answer, I would either ask an anthropologist, or someone who practices the traditions that the creature comes from

    • @keegans.969
      @keegans.969 2 года назад +8

      @@gone9820 Personally (as a non-Native who has read up on the legend out of curiosity), I would say that it is *certainly* not appropriation.
      A Wendigo in folklore can be either the spirit, or the actual possessed human. The spirit is representative of Winter and the tolls that it can take to drive one to cannibalism, as well as one's own greed taking a hold of them.
      Meanwhile the humans possessed are isolatory and indiscriminate in who they hunt, from the bones of the elderly to the flesh of the young, and have what is effectively an addiction. In every (horror) interpretation they are gaunt and bony, and some Native interpretations the body will grow in height proportionally to their hunger, some even needing to feast on human flesh weekly. They are greedy in nature as well, and one example I read stated that they would tear down forests for their own gain. Then again, that one may have been in response to Colonialism.
      One of the biggest reasons why it's such a thing to fear is how those without restraint can become a wendigo, and that despirate times will birth them. As a result, it enforces community cooperation and structure.
      The modern appearance may have also come from the Witigo, which is very similar but instead comes from attempting to become too strong (or eating bug eggs, if I remember right), and had deer features. This cryptid I haven't researched. But this is what I read online so far (will update once I read the text), the first written description of the modern Wendigo design comes from the book _The Wendigo_ by _Algernon Blackwood_, as well as the Wendigo in _Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark_.
      Likewise, yours is obviously not with bad intent as it protects instead of hunts and is a nature protector. As a result, as long as you don't give it the original/derivative names then I would say that you are good. Go wild with your lore!
      (Also, may I ask where I can read more on this eventually? I'm quite curious on wanting to read up on it more.)

      I think what most people think of as a wendigo is actually a creature from Scandinavian (I’m not sure exactly where) folklore called a leshe (I believe that’s how you spell it).

    • @sharksuperiority9736
      @sharksuperiority9736 2 года назад +1

      @@anad.6896 I’m pretty sure Leshy/Leshen/Leshe are similarly humanoid, just like temperamental forest giants. The Leshy from the Witcher has a deer skull added on, maybe to tie in with the original Leshy’s hunting associations?
      I know very little about Northern European stuff, I just did a quick google search and remember fighting the Leshy in Mh World (I also think Monstrum did an episode on the Leshy awhile ago)

      I’m not sure if anyone else read this, but when I was a kid I read one of the short stories in a book called campfire weenies or something like that. There was a genie creature that was connected to a necklace that the main character bought. The genie took silver for payment and so the main character wished for a silver candlestick or something but the genie thing took one link off of her necklace every day. She could either wait for it to strangle her or take the necklace off and get killed by the genie. It really messed me up for a while as a kid

As for little bits of lore and stuff I bet that while the other two might have murderous intentions and whatnot, the last is one probably pretty innocent, and not intentionally trying to hurt you, so when it’s happy it sneezes, or licks you, or some other disease-spreading-thing

So when you encounter the cryptid time seems to move slower around you so you're forced to watch as this massive thing just calmly steps towards you with seemingly no way to escape fast enough, your eyes locked with it's own. spooky

    Oh yeah horses have like gendered names:
    A Foal is just a baby horse in general, a colt is a baby male, and a filly is a baby female. A filly becomes a Mare after about a year in age, or when they have their first foal. A colt becomes a Stallion at around 3 years of age. A Gelding is a male horse that been neutered, which is usually done before they turn 3.
    I unfortunately have this knowledge because not only did I used to do competitive horse jumping, but my agriculture class in high school required us to memorize the different gendered labels of farm animals.

    Just want to note that the Wendigo is not really a cryptid. It is a monster from Algonquin mythology. It's not a creature that a bunch of people believed they saw and then became an urban legend. It is a monster that is used to explore greed in Native American myths, similar to a dragon in Germanic mythology. Cryptids generally lack the moral significance of monsters, although some monsters certainly started out as cryptids. On the flip side, the forms of monsters are a lot more variable. The "antlered man" idea of the Wendigo derives from tourist traps. Most of the indigenous depictions of the Wendigo more closely resemble what we would think of as a ghoul: an emaciated, pale human or humanoid (sometimes with a creepy glowing heart). They don't usually have any animal features at all. A white person who profits off of appropriating indigenous culture, such as the people who run those tourist traps, is often called a "Wendigo".

    when I heard the mention on a bit of the struggle of the dimension hopping for the moon slayer I actually thought of something, basically combining the idea of the death defier and the dimension hopping to some degree
    The idea is is that if the creature sustains enough damage, it "hops" in order for it's pursuers to lose track of it due to it's sudden disappearance as it heals it's injuries. This could explain why nobody has been able to catch it and why it is always so elusive, it's because not only does it use it's hopping for transportation and as a way to capture it's prey, but to also sneak in the shadows and escape from hunters when neccessary
    just something I thought of and wanted to share

    I came up with my own cryptid called the moss walker who lives in woodland areas in Indiana and Illinois and likes to just wander around the forest making funky sounds and taming birds or feeding them. They have a coyote skull for a head with a crest of vulture feathers similar to a cockatiel's as well curious glowing yellow eyes with round pupils that grow and shrink according to emotions ( like toothless's from how to train your dragon) and the wear moss cloaks and they have black fur with dark green edges that makes their fur look layered . They bring good luck to those who leave food or shelter out for it. They bring these people a few feathers they found or shiny rocks. If people try to hunt them or trap them they will cause some of there things to randomly disappear such as keys or small things or phones but they always return the items about 2 hours layer. Others get bad luck for a while. They have the abilities to grant good or bad luck to those who deserve it as well as being able to make small things disappear for a short period of time. They can also mimic birds and make moss and ferns grow. They have the ability to tell if someone is good or bad and they also can help those who are in trouble such as being lost in the woods. They have no need to eat but they like sweet wild berries, wild flowers, rabbits, squirrels, and small animals and even chickens they steal from some urban homes. They will help lost hikers, or people in need like homeless folk. They fear stink bugs, wasps, and overall bugs other than, moths, butterflies, fireflies, and etc but mostly they fear stink bugs and cicadas. They love to jump in leaf piles in the fall and they like to dig in trash cans looking for food like a raccoon. They are a bit taller than a human and they are fluffy yet spooky. They sleep in a den similar to fox dens, or bird nests. They can walk on 2 legs or 4. They only become aggressive if in danger, angered, annoyed, or cornered. They can coo like a pigeon and they like birds a lot. They like to keep the birds they feed under there moss cloak. They like to play with others of there kind and they don't reproduce they appear when A coyote dies and moss grows onto the skull and vultures pick meat off the bones leaving feathers behind. Then when the moon shines on the moss covered skull of the bones the bones will reanimate and flesh and fur will appear over the bones except the skull. Then two yellow or orange eyes will open and and the moss walker will use there powers to make a moss cloak to and then they will wear the moss cloak and continue their life . Moss walkers have no private areas and they have just an empty space covered by fur. There are very few because of the specific circumstances and they have to form naturally in the woods . this is all i came up with for now so yeah maybe I'll draw them and put it on my youtube channel.

    That last little crytid looks cute!! I don't want to sound like you did bad bc you honestly didn't! I just wanna say if you put the bat wings on its back and made the surrounding area all skin-ish with like pursing veins and warts/blemishes it would have gave it a more creepy plague-y look but make it cute was honestly the best choice for it

    The last cryptid in the intro (The aquatic one jumping out of the water with a man saying "Oh my god") could be one of the long-thought extinct plesiosaurs? coelacanths were thought to be extinct, but they were found. Why not a plesiosaur? the one hole in my theory is that it looks a bit too small...but they could've evolved to be smaller over time. Tell me in the replies what you think
