One of my favorite lines is when Miguel is fed up with Hobie, he says "I aint even here" which I think is him admitting he is "not in" the spider society.
"Spider-Society" is a group forcibly and dramatically established w/o his permission - large super band of sorts, therefore he doesn’t believe in consistency mate
the best hobie contradiction is that he introduces himself by saying his real name, and then 2 seconds later he says he’s not going to give away his secret identity 😂😂
Surprised you didn’t mention the part where Miles questions why everything has to happen like that. Jessica says “Hobie you’re not helping”, to which he replies “Good.” I agree that I think he will be a hero, but he needed Miles to question everything and stand up to Miguel to make others stand up to him too.
When they finish the Canon explanation & all the other spider people are entering the room for the intervention, Hobie is the ONLY one not facing Miles. He is either firmly turned around with his feet facing outward or facing the side & has to twist his body to face the center of the room
Also when he says "Its a metaphor for capitalism", its nod to the fact that comics never end/have some kind of crisis every other week because companies need money and the more stories they sell, the more money they make
yeah, on the metanarrative level, the whole idea of challenging the validity of the Canon is a stand-in for trying to break free of popular culture's cycle of repackaging and selling the same thing over and over again at the expense of nurturing creativity and exploring new ideas and stories. Like, sure, someone observing the world through the lens of the anarcho-punk ethos would see an all-devouring black hole as a representation of the very power structure they wage war against, but the writers clearly had something to say about corporate greed and those who push back against it, too.
I like the idea of a Band. With Hobie on Guitar, and Gwen on Drums, that leaves Miles with Vocals maybe? Given his singing in the first movie, it fits really well.
Ofc Miles would learn how to sing after he was in Peter Parker's shadow for that long, he really DID have a good voice so Miles had to best him on that too.
I absolutely love Hobie, he’s my favorite Spider in the movie and, love the relationship with him and Miles (especially when Miles was really not sure about him when Gwen was talking about him in the beginning)
I liked the subtle things he tells miles even at the end when he does the hands thing infront of him everyone else would think hes saying calm down but hes quietly reminding miles use your palms not just your fingers reinforcing what he said to him earlier after the barrier from the spot fight with gwen and pavitar
He says “I’m just protecting my drummer” which is Gwen. Very cool because Miles answered thinking it was about himself which is crazy because he was anxious to join something but also dope because it shows he looking out for Miles and Gwen
Hobie Brown is such a brilliantly crafted character. From the art, to his dialogue, and the whole execution. Thank you for this video New Rockstars, I feel like this gives Hobie the appreciation he deserves.

I knew who and what Hobie was about the moment I saw him. I knew he didn't agree with Miguel and I knew he cared about Gwen and Miles and sees himself like an older brother to them.
When I saw the film in theaters, I really really struggled to understand Hobie, and English is my first language! He just spoke so fast for me that I couldn't keep up (I've been told that people from the American South like myself speak slowly so that might be why)
I kind of need a movie just about Hobie. At first I thought they were gonna play him as some rival to Miles but I loved him instantly! Just how cool he was and his own person and took Miles like a little brother. I loved everything about the movie but he was seriously the highlight every time he said or did anything
this may get mentioned by the end of the video or by someone else in the comments but Miles was singing/rapping in the first movie. There could be an argument for him being vocals in the band Gwen is putting together.
I think most of us knew Hobie was the real MVP of the movie from the jump, I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops... He's the unsung hero and I think he prefers it that way
I’m also deep down the idea that in the last piece of the soundtrack by Daniel Pemberton we obviously hear Gwen goin ham but the one instrument that hits us with the Spiderverse spider-people motif is a guitar, which in my head canon is signifying how Hobie was the catalyst for the gang to be more on the side of altruism instead of thinking arbitrary rules are the solution, punk as hell
I am from England and I must say this was so funny to watch! 😂 It never even crossed my mind that anyone not living in England would struggle to understand what Hobie says!
"Just don't enlist until you know what war you're fighting in" seems Like a snarky call back to Peter Parker in Earth 616 When we first introduced to him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the midst of their civil war
I really think Hobie is going to want Miles to kill spot (since hobie is actually a killer, at least in his comic) and Miles will choose to not do it (probably at odds with Miles-42)
OKAY WAIT. since we're talking about hobie's slang, i need input on his use of "Peter Pan" and "Gwendy" to address gwen and miles. theres a lot of people on the internet talking about hobie and gwen having a possible love interest, but that doesnt make any sense since hobie has basically rooted for miles since before he even met him, and even so, he treats miles like a younger brother. (hence, "younger from 1610") im also just curious if anyone else noticed the way he seems to be on board with gwen and miles being together because its almost like he uses Peter Pan and WENDY's love interest (like the fairy tale) as a reference to 'love from another world' (i.e. neverland?). some of my friends said "peter pan" could just be like hobie's way of saying miles is a "lost boy" which makes sense, but hobie always has a deeper meaning, right ?
Hello! British person here. The actual area of the country that still uses this slang is limited to about 10 square miles in London now. No-one beyond there, unless they're from there, uses it. You want completely unintelligible but still English? Look up Yorkshire slang from round my way haha.
The thing is that Cockney rhyming slang is anachronistic so is more of a cultural flex. The examples of "apple and pears" or "Arthur J" have gone the way of the dinosaurs as they're not useful. "Scooby" is still in usage as it allows voice inflexion to vary its context. Daniel Kaluuya is using "scooby" defensively which is him protesting too much. But mostly my British ear got a disillusioned tone from Hobie rather than defiance (which is the punk spirit). We're yet to see the full Spider-Punk experience.
I thought the Scooby Doo line was him saying he won't pull the mask off the true villians face for Miles (Miguel?) like they did at the end of SD episodes. He said that's what they'd want him to do as in snitch so they could determine his true loyalty which would put him in the middle more than he should properly be. I thought he was saying that Miles has to figure it out himself to take responsibility over his own situation and free himself not be freed by someone else.
@@mentlinc we'll have to see how much the character does know in the next film. But "scooby" is a common usage figure of speech so I wouldn't draw too much from it.
