Hang Gliding Autumn in Mid Wales on the Malibu 2
Просмотров 5323 месяца назад
A cold Autumn day at the Long Mynd in Mid Wales, probably my favourite inland site in the UK. Light winds and no XC expectation so I took the Moyes Malibu 2 for a proper relaxed chill out in the sky. I wasn't disappointed! Couldn't stop thinking about Bill Moyes and all he has done for this sport; Thanks Bill and RIP you Legend
Hang Gliding Aberavon on August Bank holiday

Aberavon dunes again at the end of the summer. A take off, some moustaches, the promenade, some 'Look no hands!' and a landing. A gentle day out with good friends
Soaring Chabre at Laragne-Monteglin in 20 25 kph wind. Lower North take off and North landing field.

A windy day in Provence with a Mistral blowing to the West The air was smooth high up but as predicted by the local pilots was quite rough below 500' and probably 25kph in the landing field. Sorry about the language but I was glad to be on the ground!
Chabre lower North take off and Laragne campsite arrival

A not very lifty or windy day on the Chabre at Laragne-Monteglin Flew to the Campsite landing with no problems other than my harness jammed when transitioning to upright. You can see me attempting to loosen it. Didn't make too much difference in the end and landed OK despite the rough air close to the ground. Dropped the glider after touchdown again which has become a habit I will have to break!
Hang gliding Aspres on a windy day
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.4 месяца назад
Windy conditions for a mid July flying holiday week based in Laragne-Monteglin and Aspres in Northern Provence. Three man crew for the launch on this day and turbulent in the PG landing field which I thought might be interesting to try as an alternative to the usual Gliding club. Only flew for 35 minutes, mostly with sailplanes and one brave Paraglider pilot. The wind was veering and increasing...

third of three 10 minute flights; air was pretty rough and quite sinky in places, probably not a great time to launch with the wind 20-30 degrees off the hill. Great site and top fun though!
Dodgy landing in Mynd Paragliding BLF

Let myself get too low to make the main HG landing field so had to go for this small one. Tricky with the power lines and its quite down slope except the very bottom. No wind down there either. Note the barbed wire at the end! Shan't be trying this again.

Moyes Malibu at Windy Rhossili HD 720p

A blustery November afternoon at Rhossili, wind 20-25 gusting a bit more so top end for the poor old Malibu! The good part though was that it made the lower cliff and dunes soarable. Got dumped landing but I was a little further back and downhill than I meant to be. Sorry for the camera juddering; I used a magnetic sail mount this time and I think the Malibus' sail is getting a bit stretched so...

Looks awesome Huw. Reckon you should be awarded speed sleeves 😂.
Dont you jus love those Moyes gliders my buddy Steve now flies a Gecko I fly a Litesport 3 Happy New Year cheers
Happy new year to you too! Just loving this Gecko Bob
Great looking wing and performance to match. Like the hands off approach with VG on, the glider is flying straight as an arrow.
Hi mate, I live in the local area and want to get into Hang Gliding but there are no schools I can find in Wales- what do you suggest, buy an old wing and teach myself on the sand dunes? I’d appreciate your feedback, cheers
@@noahjones5150 hi there Noah, I’m afraid there are only a couple of schools left in the UK and they are on the South East. The best solution is to spend a week at a flying school in Spain with an English company or go to learn in Florida. Both have great consistent training weather which has always been a struggle in the UK. Buying glider and teaching yourself is not recommended; you have a very high chance of hurting yourself or even somebody else and won’t be insured unless you go through the BHPA training mill. Sorry I can’t be more helpful!
Kin ‘ell mate! 😮
@@63Ayres Twas a tight fit😅
Great video, approach and landing!
Nice video, great music! And what a view... 🤩
Malibu 2 is an amazing glider, I also have one, the 188. Bill Moyes did indeed pioneer hang gliding.
Looks fantastic H. I must go and ride the Long Mynd.
Mega mate
Looks like you were having a blast Huw. Little bit of showboating at 2:50 😁
I so want to fly there........
Lovely mate what was wind speed on dunes 👌
@@NickChittyFlying forecast at 10-12 g18 knots on metoffice but probably a steady 14-16. Worked really well although getting into the lift from launch was a bit tricky
Nice landing skills fella 👍
@@63Ayres thank you!
The view is amazing. How do you ensure you don't come into any airspace you shouldn't?
@@And_Aaron_loves_to_kill we carry a flight instrument that has all the airspace loaded on it and warns when close and has a map too. Part of the navigation system
Nicely done . I love the huge landing fields .
Me too!
Phew!
Nice one Huw!
Wow, that was a bit exciting for me, Huw! Phew, I think I’ll go and lie down.
Nice Huw! Until the next year!
@@wrathalien2 can’t wait!
Nice flying in the strong thermal conditions.
Sweet mate
Nice video and thanks for sharing. Try to have your hands higher on the downbars and push UP instead of forward at flaring time, while looking straight ahead the horizont for a perfect landing
💞Wow🤍🤍🤍🧡🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
Cracking mate
nice huw
funky names and some straight up soaring. 10/10 would recommend
Ooh, feeling a bit seasick after that, Huw.
It looks exactly like it felt
Paragliding???? Hunh?
Wow that was close
Bog thanks of God og Single surface gliders. In an advanced glider the outcome will be different. Cheers fly safe.
Well done, just made it! Would it be possible to land downwind upslope in that field?
It was a close thing. It’s the slope down the hill that made it tricky. Might have been better to land upslope
@@huwparsons4069 So long as you're on the ground before reading the power lines!
Gecko is a beautiful glider , at the high-end of performance sport class . It’s not a wing for a low airtime pilot… I ended up having a Gecko for a few years for this reason after a student pilot bent 2 base bars and a keel . I added some raked tips that enhanced its handling at low speed .
I completely agree with you!
OMG that scary ;)
Gecko is very well behaved at slow speeds. I was surprised.
It’s listed as having higher stall speed than the lite speed RX!
Yes, I think it’s down to the minimum handling speed rather than full stall. I just know that the Gecko is delightful when thermalling at trim or below and the flare window is very obvious when landing.
Looking good Huw 😁
Nice flying. Great looking uprights and aero foil carbon fibre base bar on your Malibu2.
Thanks! The base bar is shared with my Gecko. I ordered the Malibu with aero uprights as I thought it would be good to share spares with the Gecko. It’s actually the ‘dune pro’ model with thin race wires and a dingle dangle hang point. Absolutely love this glider!!
@@huwparsons4069 I had the opportunity to fly a friends Malibu 2 with the dune pro options and it did perform very well compared to my standard model Malibu2.
As a long time pilot all I could think was, "Rocks, Concrete, Rocks, etc!
Yep, plenty of all of those😊
@@huwparsons4069 At least you guys have really wide beaches for a quick "escape". Here on the US West Coast, the ocean and rip currents are usually just steps away. Maybe I should head south some day.
@@KlingbergWingMkII yes we have a huge tidal range here giving big landing areas. Great for initial training on dunes too
good effort!
WAS that a downwind uphill landing?
No, they are all into wind. One is a bit uphill though.
I want to fly there badly ….. will trade guiding at Sandia Peak New Mexico and in Colorado USA
Given how ridge sites are becoming so busy with paragliders, aero tow does look like a good option. I suppose the only downside is that unless you have thermals, flight times are short.
Flat air days can still be great fun though. It pretty good to get a really high tow and see how far you can go (and come back!)
Nice
Made that look easy mate
I dont think I’ve ever flown in such smooth air Nick
@@huwparsons4069 good mate
Thanks for posting, nice top landing. I hate to add unsolicited advice, but please note that at 0:23 you got a bit close to those trees. I'm sure some of that is just how it looks on camera, but if you agree that was close in real life, I would start making my landing approach further away from trees. It looks like you had a lot of space to work with, I would use that space instead. It's generally a good habit to approach and lose altitude in open space, if you are ever tired/groggy after a long flight, it could increase risk unnecessarily. Some active air could have made you drift or elongated your turn into a bad place. Else nice top landing.
Nice - I did a slightly more agressive stall on Moyes Mission many years ago - and same benign characteristics !!
Very Nice!
Thanks for sharing. Just out of curiosity. What was the wind speed on that day as curious to know what wind window works for dune gooning?
It was a steady 15mph at first. About 20-30degrees off the hill though. Over 20 is a bit much for the Malibu, it can fly so slowly I’m usually looking for 14-20 mph This is in 15 gusting 20ish ruclips.net/video/8Al4eVnwXOo/видео.html
@@huwparsons4069 thanks. That’s really useful information.
Nice , top landing heaven 😎👌🇦🇺
