I liked Vandamme’s move, especially if he doesn’t have a good sprint. Making it to the last 100m tells me that group didn’t have it under control. And there was a good chance that once he got that gap Group Two syndrome would take over and no one would chase. If he went from further out, it might work, but he also might get put on a leash and run out of energy to keep the longer move going
@@davidhofmayer1031 yeah, agreed. Anyone who doesn't have a sprint and is looking for a win, should at least try something similar to that move, if not get in a break earlier in the race. But if someone doesn't have a sprint but is just looking for a decent result (not looking for the win), sitting in is still the better choice I think
Such a lovely course to race on. Really punchy the whole race through! I actually did the same move as Vandamme in my race (...-650 RS) and made it stick to the end. The small hill gives you a very good launch pad, but you really need to pull it over the hill into the descent though. (Also did it with a pairing fault on the HRM unfortunatly) 😁
@@idsBme hahaha no HR brothers! Great job making it stick 😳. Must have been a very hard effort haha. Hope to race against you some day! Follow me on zwift if you haven't already! 👍
@@idsBme also, I love courses like this. Definitely fit my physiological profile better than most courses. I like short punchy efforts. That first climb is a little too long for my liking but it'll do 😂
Steering isn’t cheating-Zwift sets the rules. I hate it as a racer who hasn’t yet bought steering, because it makes it easier for a rider to attack and avoid getting drafted, but then as soon as they’re caught they can settle into draft and get ready to attack again. But again that’s Zwift’s choice to allow some unfairness between haves and have nots, presumably to encourage more purchases of Zwift Play
@@davidhofmayer1031 yeah I get that! I feel like with the pack dynamics, the more people who have steering, the more it'll even it out for everyone too though so 🤷. Maybe it isn't an advantage unless you use steering well
Great win! Are you finding that your zwift sprinting is starting to get to the level of your outdoor sprinting?
@@SilverCometCycling thanks! it's getting closer but still not the same haha. But it's also hard to compare because outdoor races you can coast quite a lot more than on Zwift. Either way, it seems like my peak outdoor would be somewhere around 1100 and maybe 900 for 20 seconds at the end of a race while indoor, it's about 925 peak and 650ish for 20 seconds? I'm not too worried about it haha. They are different animals!
@@SilverCometCycling when fresh, my numbers are around 1300 peak and 1050 for 20 seconds 😅
Nice and smart racing James. Reading the pack and trying to predict the next moves are both fun and rewarding.
@@byggerEttSlott yeah this was a fun race! Interestingly it wasn't brutally hard, but I guess you'll never know before a race what it's gonna be like!

Congrats James on the ZRS. I also started doing my zone 2 rides on Road to Sky to get the tron bike asap. It’s similar to my current Canyon Aeroad + Zipp 858 performancewise but I like how the tron bike looks a lot more. BTW what do you have your trainer difficulty set at?
@@SilverCometCycling trainer difficulty is basically in the middle haha. Does that matter?! I tried playing with it a little and all it did was offset which cassette cogs I use? 🤷🤔
The biggest consideration seems to be setting it at a level so you don’t spin out on the downhills. FWIW reading various reddit posts, most racers seem to have it around 30%
@@SilverCometCycling I'll give it a try. I think I tried that once and then decided to go back to more like 45% for no particular reason hahaha. I'm excited for this steering to distract me from actually racing 😂
Seems like I will have to hunt you down for Flat race so I will be on youtube🤣🤣 Whats your plan for weekend races? Thinking about Zwift world series one?
@@Bourne90 I am not sure I'm gonna race on Saturday but IF I do, I might be down for the DBR race? Little longer and I wanted to do it last Saturday and opted for the tiny races haha. @ the richmond loop around? 10:30 europe time?
@Bourne90 damnit! Yes that one is 430am my time. I remember it being later but the fact that the Tiny Races start at 4am make me think every other race is at a normal hour!! Argh hahaha. @Bourne90 come on up!!! You'll love it here! The air is thin and the watts flow like whine!
The sprints definitely go earlier as the ZRS goes up. If you're not sprinting in a group by .5k to go, it's too late.

@@marcmyers3034 7:10pm?!?! Do you think I'm a vampire?! 😂
ZRS is still goofy.
@@jmaxson150 I found that it happens mostly on the second of back to back races or maybe just coincidence. I got 12th/30 (10th on zwiftpower) in a second race of a back to back in a higher category. Everyone above me was 530-630 and likewise everyone under me was 530-630 ZRS and I lost a couple points but again the arrow was UPward. So the question is, is it a glitch? How much does placing matter and how much does ZRS matter? 🤷
@@jmaxson150 also, 13-16th place were all 530s and one guy at 629 and they all had UP arrows too so... I have no idea...
@@jmaxson150 just checked and two of those guys legitimately got +2 +3 pts on their ZRS haha. Maybe I can't do back to back races.... It seems like Zwift isn't registering the race I did right before it (maybe some sort of delay) and then adding the points to the previous score. For instance, if I had 476 and then after my first race it went up to 486 (+10) and then the second race I get +8, but instead of going to 494, it goes up to 484 cuz it didn't realize I was at 486 already, which is why it has the UP arrow. It's happened twice now. That seems to be the most plausible.
@@jmaxson150 aaaaand I keep talking, but I emailed Zwift support to see if they can credit the ZRS points or if there is some other explanation lol
@jameskim3 i experienced the exact same thing. But when I checked later it was fixed. I think it is just slow to update everything at first.
Great recovery James. We've all been there, distracted as the group speeds up. Congrats on 4th. 💪

Tough one James. Pretty good result considering where you were positioned. 👍
@@CoenP 😩😩😩 thanks! And today .. I dug my own grave like 5x hahaha
Considering your mistake - that was a really impressive finish!
@@PedalToProgress haha thanks, but it was a TERRIBLE mistake to make 😂. The finish result makes me even sadder that I made the mistake lol. Also, I lost 2 pts on ZRS even after a 4th place finish. I have been finding out that the placing and ZRS of surrounding finishers both matter. I may have to stick to ZRS range 2 (450-570) for now or race up a category and try to get good results to make my time count.
@ no I don’t think it was a terrible mistake to make! It is a great lesson - thanks for sharing it with us! TrainingPeaks Virtual is much more tactical than Zwift, which is why the racing is so much better 😊 You get to make MANY more of those kinds of mistakes
@PedalToProgress hahaha sounds... Fun? 😂 Is trainingpeaks virtual free??
@ yes it is free until March and then free after that with a TrainingPeaks Premium membership (~$10/month), which is substantially cheaper than Zwift 😊
@ until March yes! Then after that, if you have a TP subscription, then it is also free
HNY to you and your family, James! Erm, if the basement was too cold then may I suggest you weren't pedalling hard enough 😂😂😂 Nice sprint; you stuck with it, and there was nothing between you 4. I got 2nd on my race on Monday; I didn't quite have the legs for a sustained sprint 😢 ps I see the spit bucket is back! I would hate to ride next to you on the road 🤪
@@phil_d I'm very conscious of the fact that I spit and blow snot a lot so when I ride outdoors, I am always making sure to not hit anybody. Although I spit on my friend one time 😂. Great job on the 2nd place! Are we following each other on Zwift? What's your username?
@jameskim3 You know I'm only joking 🙃 I don't think so. I'll track you down...
@phil_d I love joking around! 😉
BTW, I meant to ask: do you practice lower cadence work? You (and I) are both spinners--but you are even faster than most--seem to average ~110ish, and there is a benefit going much lower. It is individual, but you can prove it to yourself by doing high vs low cadence intervals and see your HR /breathing rate and how you feel. Once real race season starts, it'll be fun to see your videos outside!! You are cat 3 right? I'm going to go watch that B race that you won now....ride on.
@@daletocemd4781 I don't practice much low cadence work but I probably should, just to increase my comfort level at a wider range. I am a cat 3 yup! I guess a goal would be to get to cat 2 by the end of the road season but I am more than happy to see my teammates do well and help them in races. Have a good weekend!
@@jameskim3 I will shut up now. Watched your sprint video--1200w and 180+ rpm!!! OMG-that's impressive. Wishing you the best in racing this year!
@@daletocemd4781 hahaha outdoor sprinting is def way different than indoor sprinting lol. Hopefully the difficulty of sprinting indoors helps with generating power outdoors too... I'M HOPING!
Great race again James. I made the same tactical error mentioned above by others. Was too far back at the start of the sprint and couldn’t make up the places. I need to start further forward to stand a chance as my sprint is rubbish. Btw we finished dead on the same time lol. Good luck reaching the 1000 mark. Well deserved and a great channel.
@paulmccafferty4850 almost there! 970 😂 but I'm not even sure it's worth it to monetize the channel. I don't even know everything that goes into it lol. If it means a lot of ads for viewers and pennies in my pocket, I may not even monetize... 🤷 Anyhow, that was you that I tied? Hahahaha yeah I need to figure out the best tactics for better results in these Zwift races and I also would like a bit more sprint power... Don't we all? 😆
Hi James, I enjoy your editing format and love the commentary but think if you are going to sit in and hope for a field sprint you will end up like Erik Lee and only being there to compete for the minor placings, particularly when you start riding in higher grade races. If you look at Zwifty Zwifter he doesn't have the greatest sprint either but when fit has an amazing three minute effort and has won a truck load of races playing to his strength. Look forward to seeing you progress.
@@ianglover2852 thanks for the honest input! I appreciate that. I was just planning in my head to play around with being a little more proactive on certain courses or launching at different times just to see what the outcome is and to test myself in those ways. @@daletocemd4781 thanks! I was just thinking that with where I was in the pack, I should have started sprinting earlier at 0.4-0.5km or so. @@adamb1020 hahaha I spit and blow my nose so much that you would think I'm dipping for sure! Ain't nobody wanna dip my mucus and saliva 😂. It's actually a big struggle of mine... Always have phlegm or just general congestion. It's super annoying
If you keep doing sprint races, you'll soon be in the low-mid 500s (look at the scores of the other finishers around you). And positioning seemed pretty good, confirmed by the 15-second power of the finishers around you, which was equal to or better than yours.
@@davidhofmayer1031 yeah momentum, timing, and power. Gotta be on point 👍
I envy your 200+ max heart rate. Mine is 185 I think at 44 years old
Great ride and a good timed sprint. Flat was indeed very fast! Rode it myself on NY day in the A cat and my ride was only 1 minute faster. I think you are getting ready to test deeper waters and compete in a higher category 💪👍
@@CoenP I will get there! I'm fanviewing Nick's races and also another elite A+ friend and there ain't no way I'm hanging with them even on flat courses hahaha... Yet? But yeah, I'm excited to do some races with the big boys at some point. I think most races up to 650 ZRS will feel similar, not too much difference, but as we know, every race shakes out differently too
@@CoenP are you following me on zwift? What's your username?
@@jameskim3 i’ve just added you! I’m Coen Peelen [Team NL] 👍
@CoenP yup! Followed. What does NL stand for?
@ it’s an abbreviation of Netherlands, it’s Team Netherlands 🇳🇱
You smash the climbs and the flats... Love it. I subscribed ages ago so heres to hitting 1k very soon. 🙌
@@RyanCondon haha thanks Ryan! I appreciate your sub and your videos also. I'm looking forward to seeing how these new race category ranges go for everyone too.
Btw, you're doing a very nice job recruiting subscribers. Partly it's good racing, but as importantly, interesting commentary.
@@SRK5227 thanks! I appreciate that! Just trying to be myself as much as possible. Just have to filter out the constant joking that I want to do 😂😂
Nice podium! 🥉
@@andymiller54 thanks! Zwift controllers arrive this coming week! 😂😂
@ Nice! You’ll love them. Really helps with timing power ups and steering but mostly you’ll be dropping ride on bombs like crazy now. I keep thinking I’ll naturally bump into you in a race but you race really early right?
@andymiller54 earliest race I've done is tiny races at 4am 😴 but I normally race at 530-7am
@@andymiller54 I've heard of these ride on bombs lol
Nice effort. Max cadence at 132. Wow. I'm lucky at 110.
@@SRK5227 haha cadence is something that takes practice for most. I guess I'm lucky that I did a lot of sports like soccer, basketball, and tennis my whole life that require faster feet/coordination in general? 🙂
