Haiku EDC
США
Добавлен 30 июл 2024
I have been practicing everyday carry (EDC) for almost 50 years, carrying items for both professional and personal reasons. I continue to use my 1979 Victorinox Huntsman, Rayovac flashlight, and other tools. I have traveled to every continent and led outdoor trips on many of them.
Haiku-EDC will focus on low and mid-budget items that are durable and practical over the years. Occasionally, I will review gear that is no longer available and discuss its usage.
The aim of this channel is to provide information about current EDC options with insights into past experiences. The channel may appear edited at times due to the removal of stuttering.

I have a Classic, Executive 81 and Ambassador. However they all seem to be out of production now along with my Evo 14, so I won't be carrying them anymore.
They are no longer being produced but are sold on places like ebay and craigslist.
Always great to have options. Thanks for video 📹
👍🏼
😊
I unfortunately had bad experience with nextool. In December 2023 I bought thier Flagship pro multitool, they sent wrong tool, reshipped and sent a broken flagship. I was so disappointed I gave up trying. Really had high hopes!
I get it. Things like that get under my skin.
I think Nextool are a good company but not as good as Victorinox. I have a Mini Flagship and it's pretty good but it lacks that certain ''je ne sais quoi'' that Vic products have.
If you close the pliers again with the blade out, will it lock the blade? Excellent video, never heard of this tool and I'll pick one up if I ever see it in the wild.
That seals the deal. Victorinox for me. The Scissor cutting the paracord makes the difference. Thanks
Thought that might be the results. Thanks for comparison 👍
Always great to learn something new. Thanks 👍
The package opener makes a good orange peeler, too.
Definitely, I should have stated that.
What a useful tool , thanks for look. 👍
I do like these and think they're a great option for many people, and I hope they sell a lot as I really like Victorinox as a company. It's just not a model I'd go for, I rate the small blade a lot and probably use it more than the large blade, perfect for opening packaging, so for me the Climber is a better option - it's basically the same of this except it has a small blade instead of the nailfile, and a can opener (works on Phillips 1 & 2 screws fine as long as they're not recessed) instead of the package opener. I put Plus Scales on my Climber so it does have the pen too. Generally when I carry that it's either with a Leatherman Squirt PS4 which has a file, or Knipex Cobra XS, and I can actually file my nails on the knurling on the handles on that if needs be. Recently carrying the Swisschamp a fair bit and the file on that is good for a lot more than just filing nails and I actually did use it for a nail last week, but that's once in a blue moon that I need to file a nail. But like I said I'm glad they brought this model out as a lot of people seem to like it, I'm pleased to hear it's selling well. Victorinox get a lot of flak for not being innovative but having lived in Germany and Austria I don't expect the Swiss to be innovative, they are renowned for being conservative, even slow, but everything they do they do perfectly. I don't think many people realise that Victorinox is a relatively small family owned business. Here in the UK and the rest of Europe you can get a great SAK like the Super Tinker for the equivalent of less than an hour's minimum Swiss wage, in Switzerland that would get you a pizza and a coffee.
Paid 63 at REI snagged the last one I’m actually driving home now it’s in my mailbox!!
OK, looking at the receipt. I did pay what you were saying. I just happen to use some reward points for my Capital One card. I have it. It is so nice and nicer than any other multitool I’ve ever owned. This thing is awesome.
Great looking out 👍
thanks for the Video, I'll stick to my trusted Victorinox
Great topic! I predict Roxon will release a Flex Companion Jr designed for all smaller inserts. I understand they are working on a small scissors and small diamond file.
Smaller M2 size would be interesting.
@@Haiku-EDC To follow up, Roxon just announced their small Flex scissors, small diamond file and small sheepsfoot blade.
Some great things to think 🤔 about. Thank you for video 📹
Josh from MKC says they are planning a folder to be released in 2026 but they are expanding from his backyard operation to a full size facility. So you were correct there. As far as SOG, I could definitely see GSM selling due to the incoming tariffs. And I see Victorinox moving more towards outdoor/camping gear and less focus knifes and multi tools
Finally, an honest man. Thank you from Alabama!
I appreciate that!
Another good analysis. Thanks!
Didn't know Boker did these. Thanks for video 📹
There's a big conspiracy between multitool manfacturers to never ever make the perfect multitool. If they did that they'd all lose a lot of business. I always see people commenting that they don't understand why Victorinox don't make custom or modular SAKs, but the reason is obvious: then people would just buy one, as it is many of us buy a lot of them in our quest for the perfect EDC. I've got 11 or 12 but still not convinced that I've found the perfect one so I'm always eyeing up the next one...the Explorer carried with a Knipex Cobra XS would be almost perfect for example, maybe the Tinker Deluxe but then I know the lack of inline Phillips driver on it would irk me.
What is the perfect tool, for you?
@@Haiku-EDC Thanks for asking! If you mean a one-and-done multitool it's the only one I can legally carry here in the UK, the Swisschamp. It fits snugly in the watch/5th pocket of my jeans, I pretty much always wear jeans, and I'm carrying it right now. My criteria are blades, screwdrivers ideally including inline Phillips, some kind of light prying capability, scissors and pliers. I don't need files, woodsaws or chisels on a day to day basis. I can't carry any Leatherman or Spirit/Swisstool with that toolset as the blades are locking. The Tinker Deluxe would be 98% there but it doesn't have an inline Phillips driver which can work on recessed screws (the can opener is fine otherwise), so it's not 100% perfect whereas the Swisschamp is. It's only 11mm, so less than half an inch thicker than the Tinker Deluxe so honestly that's the nearest to perfect. My perfect multitool, which doesn't exist, would be a Spirit X with one-handed opening but non-locking blade, and a 1/4 in bit driver, and onboard bit storage.
The times sure have changed lol, I started carrying a knife at 8 years old so it was 1990.
I still have a mag lite from the eighties and although it's a new one I carry a Buck 112, oh and a Buck 102 LoL. Over the years my Buck 110 disappeared 😔. I switch back and forth from a Gerber Suspension and a SOG PowerPint. These days I have a couple cheaper flashlights and a head lamp I rotate through depending what I think my days look like. I enjoyed the video thank you Cheers beers and whiskey 🤠🥃
I actually prefer the older Leatherman tools. I edc a Gen 2 Wave that I slightly modified. I replaced the scissors with an awl since I always have a Vic Classic on my keychain. My best purchase of 2024 was the Olight Arkfeld Ultra. I love the UI, form factor and overall usefulness. A close second would be the Knipex Cobra XS pliers that I keep in my left front pocket. They accomplish things that my Wave just can’t do. I can’t really think of any purchases that I regret.
Those are some cool kits 👍
That's great 👍 to know. Thank you.
I kick myself for buying too much stuff over the last year but I always have something new to try out if I don’t have money for another one. Live and learn and that takes trying out new things to see what works for you I suppose.
Robogrips came.out in the 90s... maybe I'm wrong and if I am correct me. I still have mine as well
I have the kobalt plier in that size range it sounds dumb but I put a pocket clip on there for a little bit more security. It works.
The flashlight and the RoboGrip pliers bring back some memories. I still have the RoboGrips but I have been enjoying the Roxon Flex and companion. I like having the options to switch out the implements.
That was great evolution video. Thanks so much.
I found the 3 piece set of those exact Craftsman robogrips new in box old stock. My best garage sale find of 2024! I do have to admit I edc my newer knipex cobra 125s though.
In the early to mid 90s I carried a Victorinox old-style German Army knife, the one with the nylon scales and that odd combotool with saw, bottle/can opener and awkward screwdriver on the end, with a fairly large reamer and corkscrew as backtools. I bought it in Germany whilst I was stationed over there in the British Army and carried it for a few years, later losing it as a civilian, whilst visiting Berlin actually. Between then and 2020 I probably only carried any kind of knife for a couple of years. a small backlocking Buck clone in the late 90s when I lived in Spain and then Ireland, then I bought an Opinel on a trip to the UK and not knowing it was illegal carried it there, then a few months later after I'd moved to the Netherlands I lent it to a friend little knowing he was going to use it to open a can (!) and chucked it after that as obviously the blade came back destroyed. When I got back into EDC a few years back I wanted an old style German Army knife and was dismayed to find the Victorinox ones had long been discontinued, so I opted for the Hiker as that was a UK legal knife with pretty much the same toolset of the current German (and Swiss issue) army knife, also known as the GAK, Soldier 08, or the civilian equivalents the One-Handed Trekker, aka Trailmaster. Since then I've gone deeper down the EDC rabbithole and have over 10 SAKs, half a dozen folders, and about half a dozen multitools as well as Knipex Cobra XS and other gear. Sat here now with a Swisschamp in my pocket, that's my only ''one and done'' multitool as I like to have scissors on me at all times.

These end up being great little tools. Thanks for video. 👍

What a great rundown! I totally agree with your recommendations. There is another way, and it comes at a weight penalty. And that's to bring pouch of smaller tools, such as the 4" Klein safety scissors and the XS Knipex Cobras. You can supplement as needed with a pry bar and or screwdriver handle and bit kit. Since all of these things are exactly what they appear to be, there is less risk of TSA asking to inspect it.
The VE5 makes a decent in bag organizer. As long as you can either attach the handles to something, or the bag is small enough that the VE5 won't flip to the side/upside down. Keep the Obsidian for a couple of years, then sell it for double what you paid for it.
Viperade VE5 is my EDC yeah it could be a bit better I tucked the handle & D Rings in the pocket just don't try to stuff a lot in it, it works for me yeah, Leatherman is declining last multi-tool I got was a Victorinox Swisstool not a fan of the NEW stuff my EDC is a a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker I like flashlights with batteries that can be changed either standard or rechargable, AA, AAA, 18650
Great kit👍. I like all the storage and organization abilities of the bag. First time viewer new subscriber
