7:18 The grains of sand is simply to plug all the small gaps where potentially enemy ants and other small critters could get in through, it's a defensive instinct and it's good to have some sand in the outworld otherwise they will use garbage that could get moldy.

Awesome video! Have been thinking about getting a Camp. Castaneus queen for a little while now.. currently have a camp. novaeboracensis colony in hibernation and want something different! In a prior formicarium that your ants were housed in, it had a nestmate and I'm curious what it does? Is it for humidity?

The species is specifically Odontomachus ruginodis (Rough-node Trap-jaw Ant)
