    do you put the ada aqua soil in wih the subrate or do you just like sprinkle it by the plants?

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics День назад

      Good question!! Most of the plants I actually plant in small planter cups that I build into my backdrop (check my poison dart frog terrarium build video) I put the Ada directly in there along with substrate mix. For the wet moss mix I actually crush it into powder and sprinkle it on the wet moss mix after I apply it just to give it an extra boost! Thanks for the comment

      Yeah but the whole point of buying them is because they’ve been treated to be sterile and guaranteed free of pesticides or anything else that could offset the balance of my paludarium. Pests etc. there’s a lot of things that can go wrong when you just pick up leaves off the ground and put them in your enclosure. Especially ones containing rare expensive poison dart frogs who can absorb chemicals and toxins through their skin. Which can be fatal.

    • @megaanraaee
      @megaanraaee 23 дня назад

      Could you move straight to the substrate barrier? Or the foam is 100% needed?

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics 22 дня назад

      The foam does not get moldy, but if it did the springtails would eat the mold. All the little micro organisms in the tank are constantly cleaning all that out, the waste they leave behind gets used by the roots from the plants. You could skip the aquarium foam if you want to, but you would want to make sure you’ve got some separation between the water line and the substrate or that will start to stink eventually. You could do the aquarium divider grid, put the substrate barrier on it directly and layer it with some lava rock or clay pellets before adding substrate. But you definitely need to make sure you’re not letting the actual substrate sit in water.

    I keep buying flightless fruit fly habitats and they keep dying like a week or two after buying them. I'm using them to feed my tiny house geckos they're too small to eat anything else and it's very annoying having to buy these 15 dollar tubberware of flies every week or so, the habitats look exactly like this so idk why they're dying, I just leave them in my room. What am I doing wrong?

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics 26 дней назад

      Hmm 🤔 maybe the cultures are too dry from the store. You could try spraying a little water in there. Are you allowing the flies a few days to breed before you feed them to your geckos? You should make sure to leave about half the colony left after feeding. If none of that works I would suggest you start making your own cultures. I have a full video of that you can watch. It’s way more cost effective and the cultures I make myself usually last about a month and a half. (Then you won’t have to buy anymore and you’ll save lots of money)

    One thing I learned from fiddler crabs too late was they bury there poop, so I water changed about maybe 4 times, realized the water started to smell like sewage, I started getting the sand out and the entire bottom layer was black... About 1 cm high across a 25 to 50 gallon tank of crab poop. I no longer have fiddler crabs 😂 the cleaning would take ages, would smell god awful, and I couldn't find a filter perfect for the tank so it kept clogging with sand and I got like 5 different filters. I learned very quickly this wasn't for me 😂❤

      @alternateaquatics the wet moss mix is a game changer. I was looking for a way to add moss seamlessly and couldn't find out how. I do have a couple of questions. Would you recommend stabbing a hot needle through the foam and into the planters to allow water to drain out? I don't know how well the water would be able to exit the planter with foam all around it without holes? Also, this wasn't part of the video, but I figured I'd ask; would you recommend the Repashy vitamins for Mantellas as well? I've just been feeding them fruitflies without any additional vitamins, as the person who sold them to me said they just needed the fruitflies.

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics Месяц назад

      If you’re adding the planters directly into the foam, yes you can stab into it to help the water drain, all of my planter cups were positioned so the they butted up to aquarium filter foam, this allows them to drain without problems and the filter foam allows for roots to grow down to the drainage layer.

      @alternateaquatics i have one last question. I was thinking of making the bottom part of my terrarium a fish tank for small fish. I was thinking of using a stainless steel dish drying rack to prop up the bottom and give the fish about 24"x18"x7" space. What are your thoughts on this idea? The fish I'd put under there would be very small and I'd put a water filter next to the pump
