Solo Desert Motorcycle Riding: Tips to Stay Alive
I like to ride solo on almost all of my adventures and I also live in what can be a harsh and dangerous environment of the California desert. The Mojave desert is a beautiful region and offers amazing opportunities for riding, camping, hiking and more. However, every year people are rescued or their bodies are recovered because they were unprepared. In this video i'm going to go over a few of the things I do to help ensure my safety when I'm riding motorcycles solo in the desert

    Thanks for the great review. I've got a fully stock 2021 KLX 300. I rode it from Nelson British Columbia all the way to the tip of South America and back up to Bogota Colombia where I flew the bike home. 10 1/2 months and 40,000 kilometers. I was fully loaded with camping gear, parts tools etc. The bike was genius. Not a single issue. Fully loaded, up hill and into a wind I was limited to 65 kph. Any other situation the speed was fine. At 55 kph I got 32 km's per litre. That's 150 miles per tank or 246 km's. 87 octane was just fine. It now has 57,000 km's on it. I just tested it and it has full compression and a leakdown of just at 7%. Beat that!! Great bike for anything you want it for other than racing.

    @10:35 is exactly my kind of gear. I hate leaving the tent at night, so a pee cup is the way to go! I use a small Nalgene (wide mouth of course)... I carry a whistle instead of a SPOT or other sat unit. Columbia makes a pair of camping clogs that have a nice, thick sole (for trekking into the wilderness to take of #2 business). My tablet is a rugged one (DMD T-865) that doubles as my navigation device. I load it with movies and podcasts. I always have ear-plugs to help me ignore "What was that?" noises at night.

    It was unreal when JT had to restrict hikers during the summer starting a few years ago cuz they didnt understand how harsh the environment is. I thought it was mainly German and Asian tourists but found out it was a lot of CA urban dwellers thinking they knew better. They wouldnt be able to carry the amount of water it takes to stay actually hydrated on a 4 hour hike in +100 temp's. I used my KLX to get out to all the mining history and abandonded stuff out there and it still blows my mind how the settlers and pioneers overcame the environment in the Mojave.

    I have a 2020 Suzuki DRZ 400 and a 2024 KLX 300. All the internet folks say the KLX is better because it has a 6th gear and fuel injected so I bought one to check it out. I can honestly say it gets ignored most of the time as I jump on the DRZ. It comes down to power and torque. The DRZ 400 is so much more powerful that it’s 100 times more fun to ride. I’m 6Ft tall and the DRZ has a bigger frame, less cramped, better suspension, no work needed, the KLX is too soft for a full sized man and I need to re-work it unlike the DRZ. The DRZ is just much more enjoyable, enough power to give you a bit of a thrill while the KLX feels like riding a moped.

    I just got home from a four hour tortuous ride. I don’t know what changed, my tailbone would get sore, but not like today. I rode the last 7-10 miles standing on my foot pegs, I wanted to cry. Something has to change so I’m doing this mod. If it fails and I ruin the seat, I’m getting a different one anyway. I'm just learning all this motorcycle stuff. Is your tank bag too far back to allow correct seated posture? On my klx300 I have to sit further forward than yours allows to get my feet underneath my hips (which I've noticed helps a ton in keeping the front from washing out.) At 0:06 you're sitting way to far back, with your hips and therefore center of gravity shifting well behind the footpegs when seated. At least that's what I'm being told by the "experts."

    • @milestogomoto
      @milestogomoto 8 месяцев назад
