Thank you for your kind words. 👋☺️
Hey you Great insights
Hi Theodosia 👋. Thanks for your kind words. 😊
Every video I have watched except yours has said how racist it is out there and how immigration treats you horribly coming in. I’m glad you had such a good experience
I seem to get mistaken for being Mauritian/Creole a lot. But they definitely try to come for my pockets when they hear my North American accent. It helps to have locals on your side if you are going to come here.
@@expatsierra I was thinking of vacationing in Mauritius for a week or 2 but having a lot of apprehension about it now. I want my people to come and have a good time and not be judged if you know what I mean
@BlackCoasterGeek yes, I get it. You have every right to go where you are celebrated. Coming here will definitely be a gamble. If you do, I hope that you'll get the chance to encounter the many kind-hearted and generous Mauritians that do go out of their way to be helpful. 🙏🏽
@@expatsierra Appreciate you Queen
Congratulations on a beautiful and informitive presentation. Its has helped me in my decision to move to the island😅❤
I'm happy that you found the video informative and helpful in your decision-making process. Thank you for watching. 👋😊
Non-gluten food is available at Winners, for example! At Tribeca Mall and Trianon shopping mall. Soya, Almond, and coconut milk too, are available, at different locations, around the island.
Thanks for the tip, Navin. ☺️👍
Thank you so much for your videos. I will be there soon and am interested in staying awhile but want to live in areas away from beach and cooler temps sounds good to me. Thank you again for providing this information.
Thank you for watching and best wishes to you for your move. 🥳👏🏽
Bon jour Sierra. I have made it to Mauritius currently in Grand Baie. I would love to meet up and buy you a coffee or beverage of your choice if you are open.

I have lived away from this island bar the first 18 years of my life, i hate this island as only the whites live well ; they own every thing ; i truly despise this godforsaken disgusting island and the few so called Europeans who live there and the few elite Asians who are totally corrupt.😢😢

Thanks for sharing. I have an interest in Mauritius and wanted to know other places other than Grand Baie or Tamarin.

Can someone get good pay hotel works or Companys works that pay well
Hello and thank you for your message. I have not entered the Mauritian job market but upon further research I was able to find that the average monthly income in Mauritius is between MUR 25,000 - MUR 30,000 which translates to $600-$750. There may be variations depending upon skill so it's best to just do some online research to further narrow this down for your particular situation. Best wishes.
Nice! 😊Are you still there?!
Hi there 🙋🏾♀️. Yes, I'm still in Mauritius. ☺️
Thank you for the tips. Loving Mauritius so far :)
Great to know and you're very welcome. Thanks for watching. ☺️👋
A natural melting pot! Not often appreciated by the locals unless they travel abroad!
Good point. 👍😊🎯
Rose Hill and Curepipe are my 2 favorite cities coz they reflect genuine Mauritian culture and social fabric In coastal tourist villages people do not know each other and the mentality is so contrasting compared to cities (conservative/communautarian rural plains vs mixed/progressist urban central plateau which also reflects the political slant)
Thanks for sharing. You're right! There's a huge contrast. The center seems more community-minded and the coast is more to each their own. So far, the weather and the lower cost of living are my highlights about living in the center of the isle. 😊
Nice information for everyone considering moving abroad! Above all, "step out of my comfort zone" is a very impressive sentence.❤
Thank you for your feedback, Sophia. Life truly begins when we step outside of our comfort zone. It's always worth a try. ☺️
Happy celebration for anniversary, enjoy life. Our island is plenty of fun and historical sites.
Thank you. ☺️👋
Wait till you have the medical service!
Oh, I did 😅. What was your experience like?
Public or private medical services..
I've dabbled in both, but I think customer service is a pretty unique experience here for the most part.

Hi Sierra, congratulations to your 1-year Mauritian anniversary 💯!!! Wow.... time is really running. And greetings from the West of the island. We love the South and the West ❤💛💚 because we focus on nature. My personal lesson: AFREEca is the future.
Hello and yes time really does fly! I'm sure that the southwest of the island is filled with enough natural beauty for you and your family 😊. "AFREEca is the future": I approve this message. 👍
0:24 GREAT INFO THANKS WILL DEFINITELY USE THIS INFO!!!!
Thank you for the positive feedback. 🥰
Thank you for sharing. Most expat videos talk about living in the north or the west. Looking for more info regarding living centrally for an expat.
Hello and thank you for your suggestion. More content related to the center of Mauritius is a great idea. I'll take that into consideration for my next video. Thanks again for tuning in. 😊
Have you experienced racism?
Not that I'm aware of 😊. People often assume that I'm Mauritian upon first glance here.
For Americans and Canadians not used to Florida weather, how humid is the weather in Port Louis? What is it like so far from family wnd friends? What kind of health insurance does an older expat have?
Port Louis is a very hot and humid location. Being away from family and friends certainly gets tough at times but I think being abroad is a unique experience that many don't get to have. I cant say that Mauritius is my forever, but if all fails, I can always go home 😊. I personally use SafetyWing for my nomad insurance. As of now the deductible is $250. Feel welcome to check out their site to see if it's suits your individual needs.
@@expatsierra Retired people can't use the nomad insurance of Safety Wing. How do long term retirees get covered? About the weather, do people have to spend most of their time in air-conditioning because of the high humidity? Is it like living in a sauna??
I'm not well-versed in retirement insurance but I would recommend joining Expat.com where people post in forums and ask questions about retirement and Mauritius quite often. Most accommodations and establishments have air conditioning and/or fans. If it's too hot during the day, then evening activities are possible but humidity is always lurking since it's an island.
How walkable is Port Louis for older people? Is it very hilly like Caribbean islands? How about dealing with the high humidity and distance from friends and family? What is the center of the island where it's cooler?
Hello and thanks for tuning in 😊. Port Louis isn't very hilly however the sidewalks aren't always neatly paved which can be a bit daunting. There also are large gaps/canals between the streets and the sidewalks. I'm assuming that this is to help for flooding but I'm not 100% sure. You should also keep in mind that many areas in Mauritius do not have sidewalks but Port Louis seems to be the main exception in this case. Port Louis also tends to be *very* hot and humid and is next to a pier. In the US and Canada you tend to feel cool temps when you move close to a body of water but its the opposite in Mauritius. Being close to a beach or pier will feel hotter and more humid. Curepipe is in the center of the island and tends to be one of the coolest locations in terms of temps. Distance from friends and family can be a challenge but I guess it also depends on the individual. Frequent usage of Whatsapp and other messaging services can be helpful.
@@expatsierra How do people close to amenities, which I assume is in Port Louis, handle the high heat and humidity? Are they confined most of the time to air-conditioning?
Hey we miss your videos! You good 👀
Thank you for checking in 😊 and my apologies for slacking 😅. I'm still in MU but just juggling a lot more tasks these days. I'm planning to film a video about my 1 year anniversary in MU very soon. Stay tuned and thanks again. ☺️

Thank you so much Sierra for all the great info. I have a question about the premium visa. As I know it is renewable but do you know for how long?
You're very welcome, Yamuna. Thanks for tuning in 😊. Currently, the Premium Visa can be extended for 6 - 12 months at a time. I don't think that there is any public information that exists which states how many times a person can renew though. I hope this helps!
Are there any severe natural disasters there?
Hello and thank you for watching. Yes, Mauritius experiences cyclone season typically between the months of November - April.
@@expatsierra omg how do yall prepare? Have you experienced one? That’s the only thing that worries me.
This was my first year in Mauritius and my first time experiencing cyclones. I've observed that some just bring steady rain and moderate winds while others can be very scary. Cyclone Belal has been the most catastrophic this season and it wreaked a lot of havoc when it passed through. For me, it was like seeing something from a movie...it was very surreal. To prepare, the weather authority will classify the intensity of the storm from 1-5. 1-2 is when you should buy your provisions. 3-5 is when places start to shut down and soon everyone will be mandated to stay at home.
@@expatsierra Girl everything else is perfect but those cyclones are the only thing that sort of holds me back from Mauritius. Based on how peaceful you seem it must be worth it though. Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

So it means you have been renewing your nomad visa for the past three years but EDB mauritius told me that the maximum nomad visa renewal is only one year am confused Please can you find out if it can be renewed continuously for 10 years
Hello. I wasn't able to locate a specific amount of times that the Premium Visa can be renewed on the website, but you should consider what was mentioned to you by an EDB representative. There are other visas available on the site that you might be able to apply for but you will have to research this further.
@@expatsierra Ok thanks. But which city do you live? Curepipe, Grandbay, Tamarin, or where so i can have an idea of cost of living there thanks
Hi which city do you live in?
What exactly do you do there
Thank you so much. “Remote worker” is under an employer? How about someone that is self employed and remote? Keep making videos!!! Love it!
Hi Brad. If you're speaking in regards to the Premium Visa, you can apply as an employee of a non-mauritian company as long as they allow you to work remotely. You can also apply as a self-employed individual who works remotely. Both scenarios require proof of employment and pay studs/billing statements. Hope this helps!
