Ophelia
Финляндия
Добавлен 27 апр 2020
Ophelia is a duo of Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano, and Tuomas Kourula, lute, archlute, theorbo and baroque guitar. We specialize in early music performance, especially English lute songs of John Dowland. Henry Purcell is also a favourite of ours. We are based in Turku, Finland - see our web page at ophelia.fi.
The Willow Song | OPHELIA
The Willow song is an old English folk song that has a special connection: it was used by William Shakespeare in Othello. The first record of the song is even earlier, from a book of lute music published in 1583. Moved by the songs lyrics and Ophelia's fate in Hamlet, and also by the famous painting of Ophelia by John Everett Millais, Sanna was inspired to enact a watery demise for her character in this video. We had been planning to shoot this originally in the summer of 2022, but circumstances prevented it. The prolonged gestation time was probably a benefit in the end, because the video fell together very easily for such a relatively complex production.

"Flow, my tears" by John Dowland | OPHELIA
Просмотров 7126 месяцев назад
Usually in our videos we try to show you the beauty and history (or what remains of it) of our home town of Turku in Finland. This time we took a different path, literally and symbolically. We in the 21st century are no strangers to despair; reveling in resentment is perhaps more common now than ever before. But there is no beauty in it anymore, we have lost both the poetry and the sophisticati...
4'33" by John Cage (Kremen manuscript version) - OPHELIA live at the Admiralty

Ever since our first performance of this famous work by John Cage with theorbo accompaniment (here: ruclips.net/video/H0FMrB3qTEg/видео.html) we have wanted to make another version, using the earlier Kremen manuscript, and with archlute accompaniment, seeking a lighter sound and stricter tempo. Also the 1/4 comma meantone temperament of our first recording was perhaps a bit too extreme for this...
"I'll Sail Upon The Dog-Star!" by Henry Purcell | OPHELIA

Dog-Star is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. It is a star connected with many myths and traditions and, historically, due to it's brightness, has been very useful in navigation. We took our cue from the "roaring boy" in Purcell's song and undertook a voyage in our vessel, only to end up - where? John Dowland: If My Complaints Could Passions Move | OPHELIA
Просмотров 898Год назад
In this song from his 1597 "The Firste Booke of Songes or Ayres", John Dowland is setting the tone for his entire oeuvre: melancholy, despair, bitterness, disappointment in love. But if that were all, we would hardly be singing his songs these 400 years later. With Dowland, there is always hope, even when he tells us there is not. There is always beauty, even in the blackest depths. And there i...
Henry Purcell "O let me weep!" - OPHELIA: Sanna Kola (mezzo soprano) & Tuomas Kourula (lute)

Henry Purcell's famous Plaint "O Let Me Weep", from semi-opera The Fairy Queen. We shot the video in the tiny chapel of the 15th century Qvidja manor house or small castle in Parainen, Finland. The chapel had inspired us immediately on our first visit, when we shot another of Purcell's great songs, They Tell Us That You Mighty Powers (video here: ruclips.net/video/iIGOP4Wk3vU/видео.html). Ophelia comes again to Kuusisto castle ruins and returns to this brilliant song, which was three years ago our very first video ever (you can see the original video at ruclips.net/video/LKmv2dcaWEg/видео.html) Performed in Original Pronunciation, in which couplets originally meant to rhyme but which are lost in modern pronunciation, such as die-sympathy, once again do rhyme. "One Charming Night" by Henry Purcell - OPHELIA

Purcell's unique genius is revealed in all it's subtlety and might in this magical song from The Fairy-Queen, "One Charming Night". In under three minutes Purcell sets us alight with all the sweet agony our hearts are capable of. The most intimate and nocturnal of settings was needed here, lit by candles and moonlight, obscured by shadows and wisps of smoke. Performed by OPHELIA: Sanna Kola, me...
Henry Purcell "O SOLITUDE"- OPHELIA (Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano & Tuomas Kourula, lute)
Просмотров 9552 года назад
"O solitude", a song upon a ground - a device that Purcell used better than anyone - and a strange and wonderful melody, in combination with a poem of rare quality: all those conspire to make this song arguably one of Purcell's finest. The song is peculiarly timeless and universal, but maybe even better suited to our times than any previous era - when have people ever been so solitary? Performe...
"Now o now I needs must part" by Dowland | OPHELIA Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano & Tuomas Kourula, lute

Elizabethans really knew how to write break-up songs: sometimes it feels like that's the only thing they ever did, or enjoyed. John Dowland naturally wrote some of the very best ones, including the one in this video, a tune which was also successful as an instrumental piece called "Frog galliard". The frog in question was probably Francis, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, one of the many suitors of E...
"Thinks't Thou then by Thy feigning" by John Dowland | OPHELIA
Просмотров 6202 года назад
"Thinks't Thou then by thy feigning" sails dangerously close to the wind: the poet, overcome with desire, appears to be contemplating taking unfair advantage of a person sleeping close by - or maybe only pretending to sleep... but in the end he decides not to step too far over the line - unless a stolen kiss should be counted as a crime. Performed by OPHELIA - Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano (sung in...
"Can she excuse my wrongs?" by Dowland | OPHELIA Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano & Tuomas Kourula, lute
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
The words to "Can She excuse my wrongs" have been attributed to Robert Devereux (1565-1601), 2nd Earl of Essex - the tune is also known as an instrumental composition "The Earl of Essex Galliard". In the song, the poet can be interpreted to make references to his relationship with Elizabeth I, feeling jilted, jealous, spiteful and resentful for having been put aside, despite his high ambitions ...

A song for the ages, and the song for our troubled times - "The end of history". Dowland always transcends time, but with this song he shakes off all ties to convention and dives deeper than anyone had ever done, and comes back with a shining black diamond, forged in the subterranean pressure of all hope lost forever. MUSIC FOR A WHILE by Henry Purcell | OPHELIA: Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano & Tuomas Kourula, theorbo

Purcell could have been counted as an important person in the history of music for just this one song. The meandering, mysterious and ambiguous ground bass that the song is based on is itself a flash of genius, but combined with the melody that unites poise with improvisatory beauty, and Dryden's evocative words, the whole forms an abstract and kaleidoscopic masterwork. Henry Purcell's "Music F...

Magnífica interpretación de la obra de Dowland, el sonido del instrumento es perfecto el intérprete fantástico.
1 If my complaints could passions move, Or make Love see wherein I suffer wrong: My passions were enough to prove, That my despairs had govern'd me too long. O Love, I live and die in thee, Thy grief in my deep sighs still speaks: Thy wounds do freshly bleed in me, My heart for thy unkindness breaks: Yet thou dost hope when I despair, And when I hope, thou mak'st me hope in vain. Thou say's thou canst my harms repair, Yet for redress, thou let'st me still complain. 2 Can Love be rich, and yet I want? Is Love my judge, and yet am I condemn'd? Thou plenty hast, yet me dost scant: Thou made a god, and yet thy pow'r contemn'd. That I do live, it is thy pow'r: That I desire it is thy worth: If Love doth make men's lives too sour, Let me not love, nor live henceforth. Die shall my hopes, but not my faith, That you that of my fall may hearers be May here despair, which truly saith, I was more true to Love than Love to me.

Magnificent this beautiful and moving work of art❤
Thank you so much!
Mucho gusto, mucha sensibilidad

Outstanding!
Thank you so much! 🤩
What a treat! This style of really old, profane, folk music is one which speaks directly to me. It might seem very simple and raw, almost like a sung fairy tale or a lullaby, but it hides a subtle complexity - which you both bring forth with your usual sensitiveness, of course - with its sudden harmonic shifts that make it feel somewhat ‘liminal’ or between spaces. It’s almost like changing from one world to another with each turn of phrase. I also can’t help but feel a certain kind of irony or a ‘hidden’ message in the music itself, some kind of moral which the text sort of hints at, but it’s all so subtle and mysterious. Very interesting and ‘tense’, in a way, despite the apparent, deceiving tranquility. Sanna showcases her outstanding performing abilities once again, without prejudice to her beautiful voice - she sounds gorgeous and authentic as always! The range of emotion, from breeze to gale, is just astounding. A round trip of the voice and the soul. Tuomas’ understanding of this piece - of every piece he performs, actually - is on point as usual, demonstrating how, on many occasions, less is more. Neither of them outshines the other, which is also very important in building the required tone. I just can't say enough good things about this ^^. And the imagery chosen for the video is so appropriate on so many levels! Ophelia impersonating Ophelia! Some of the images are truly breathtaking, but how could they not be? The sunlight, the wind, the greenery, the two of you, the flowing river… Everything very pastoral and pre-Raphaelite. Also, I seem to see a recurrent theme of water and death lately? Thanks again for this beautiful gift. Lots of love from this side of the world!
Dear Francesc, thank you once again for your perceptive essay and kind words! 😍 You seem to grasp our thoughts so very well. It wasn't long after we had established Ophelia that the thought of this video emerged. It has been slowly and gradually "cooking" 😄 but it was clear from the start that this is going to contain enormous amounts of pre-Raphaelitism. 🧡 Ophelia and Hamlet and Shakespeare and Othello's Willow song all mixed, what could be more touching , in my mind at least. We were very happy to have great weather for this - waters tend to be somewhat colder here typically in september... 💦🥶 Oh, and the coincidence with NOI's enchanting watery video - it's really a coincidence. 😃 Maybe great minds think alike.😅
Very nice playing and recording- the church is empty- why not play for an audience?
Thank you! It would have been impractical to shoot the video with an audience, cameras all over, several takes, me sitting with my back to the audience.
What a beautiful day Ophelia has posted a new song What a beautiful day We are blessed with ears to hear it
It's happy that we evoke such poetry! 💞🤩
Wonderful!
Oh thank you! 🤩
Glad you think so!
Do keep doing these !
We shall! 🤩
How utterly BEAUTIFUL....
🥰
Très belle version de cette chanson. Très belle voix, quasiment une voix d'alto ou contralto .
It is a glorious thing to see this kind of mastery and perfection on so very difficult an instrument. Tuomas Kourula is inhabited by the spirit of John Downland and is able to summon him at will... One can sense one's soul being healed by this performance...
Thank you for your precious words! It's not easy to accept such high praise, but I'll do my best! 😉
What a stunning sound!

Wonderful rendition. Thanks for sharing. 🌷

You did a nice job on this arrangement! I've only ever heard it on keyboard and have always loved it. Thanks!
To think that such noble, glorious music was common entertainment in the days of Dowland! THANK YOU for these beautiful productions...
And to see that such a wonderful and kind comment is possible even in these times makes us very happy - thank you!
@@OpheliaEnsemble Just the fact that you give us the visual context with the beautiful costuming and the superb lute player sitting casually on the ground (as opposed to glued to a table). This is a total package. I hope others involved in historically informed performance will follow your lead in this. In an age of vulgarity and immodesty, this is just the remedy the world needs...
Thank you for your beautiful and encouraging words! ❤️
this interpretation has certain swing quality, as if it's a blues... most renditions I've heard played the introductory notes very equal. I'd love to have a score for classical guitar.
I love your work and your painterly style thanks.
Thank you, a wonderful comment!
Just found your music, and I'm sharing it with some friends. Thank you.
Thank you for commenting and sharing!
Lovely
Thank you!
In terms of historical correctness, this is a ridiculous performance. 1) In the Renaissance NOBODY would sing like that - oper singing technique was developed much later. 2) That vibrato is out of context. In early music, vibrato is JUST an ornamentation. 3) This is a very simple song about a peddler, not Verdi's Lady Macbeth.
We agree about this comment being ridiculous, but it's kind of you to put the disclaimer right in the beginning to caution others.
@@OpheliaEnsemble pardon me, I amended it.
Yes, thank you, much better now, I think. Still, historical correctness is a misnomer, there is no such thing. Vibrato in any case is not really of central importance, it's just something that is easy to notice. The more important things such as tactus, strong and weak notes, beat hierarchy, importance of text, improvisatory delivery, historical temperaments, moving the affects of the audience and so on - those are almost never commented upon. Not to mention that even a hundred years ago operatic singing was very different from today: it's useless to hold on to any strict tenets about music making 400 years ago.
Minha nossa!!! Que interpretação sensível e uma sonoridade extraordinária nessa pequena igreja! Parabéns Thomas.
Obrigado pelo seu gentil comentário!

Great performance (as usual) and visuals that totally capture the incongruity of loving this fancy old music in modern urban settings. Love it.

STOP! I’m singing “Flow, my tear(e)s” on the 21st of this month! (Along with the duets “Et misericordia” and “Sound the trumpet”). You play some of my favourite pieces ever, and now the very first I will start my next concert with! These coincidences are beginning to be alarming :D Jokes aside, I find the thoughts behind this new production really interesting. Pain and sorrow are universal, finding no barriers in space or time - the only thing defining them are the quality of being alive. However, I don’t think we’ve lost the art of melancholy: we have people like you, who keep us in touch with the most sensitive and vulnerable part of ourselves. The problem is, not many people like to see themselves under that light (because, you know, “light doth but shame disclose” :P). I’m happy to listen to Sanna again, and I LOVE her rich, “meaty” and dramatic voice, so expressive! You also have a vocal range very similar to my own, and I find it really cool ^^. And what can I say about Tuomas’ strings and presence that I haven’t said a million times already? I know this is a very important piece to you, which is very evident and breaks through the screen. A true delight, if a painful one - as it should. Thanks once again for your dedication. Your art is truly inspiring, as always. Hugs!
Hello, wonderful to hear about your concert! It would be nice to see it on RUclips. But maybe these are not mere coincidences - similar minds think along the same paths. This video has been germinating a long time, but eventually came together quickly. There are several more ideas waiting to be realized still - hopefully we will get something out without too long a delay ;)
@@OpheliaEnsemble And I'll certainly be looking forward to it ^^. In regards to the concert being on RUclips, I don't think that will be the case, unfortunately. It's a very amateur thing, and I wouldn't count on every one of the participants wanting to be on the Internet. :/
Ok, we will have to wait 😄 We wish you a very enjoyable concert!
Thank you, dear Francesc, it's so nice to hear from you! And I'm so glad that the video aroused so many thoughts within you, and it's wonderful that the massive importance of this song for me and for us together was able to be visible through screen. 😍 Have a happy spring! 🌼
Beautiful. Bravo!
Thank you very much!
Definitely a different and interesting take.
Thank you for saying that! It's always a gamble, trying something and now knowing whether it will translate.
My tears are flowing as I watch and listen to two time travelers bring their talent to this post-modern backdrop of graffiti and smokestacks.
Thank you for watching and listening, and commenting! This is what much of Turku is, and we definitely feel like time travelers...
Always been a time traveler... 🫠
This is an amazing recording. The tone is warm with clarity and the reverb has a nice decay. Great playing and ornamentation.
Thank you, your words are very welcome: it's not easy to capture the sound of the lute. Very happy to hear the effort has been succesful here!
Esta peça musical é muito importante para mim também. Traz uma carga nostálgica muito intensa, de um período da minha vida e pessoas que foram muito importantes ao conjunto do meu ser. Uma belíssima execução.
