Sailing Sea Dream of Clyde
Добавлен 26 мар 2015
Here you will find videos of young(ish) folks sailing aboard a 1979 Westerly Discus sailboat around the west coast of North America and soon, beyond. We focus on making videos centered around the sailing aspects of our trips, showing folks around the nice places where we anchor, plus occasional bits of natural history, as well as local knowledge we have picked up over the years.

Great video! I’m wintering in Bellingham. I have a Farr 1104. Getting it ready for off shore this year.
Thanks! We started our journey to Mexico in Bellingham back in September 2023! We love Bham :) Farr 1104 looks like a fun and fast boat! Where are you planning to sail? Cheers!
If you missed earlier videos of our adventures in Mexico, check out this playlist that has them all! Thanks for tuning in! ruclips.net/p/PLcmKrL3eA8jTB4qWtAKqbAyPb-KYPvo0J
Have the panels gotten in the way of your sheets while sailing? Have you guys looked into sailing to El Salvador and Nicaragua? The Gulf of Fonseca looks like a beautiful place to visit.
So far, no issues with sheets getting cause on the panels, though we have not yet used the spinnaker since installing them. We'll most certainly have to pivot the panels down when using the spinnaker as the sheet come to to the stern behind the. We've not looked into that area for this trip; we'll be starting to sail home to the Pacific Northwest this spring via Hawaii and Alaska! But this by no means will end our cruising days! Cheers!
Congratulations on doubling your solar collecting ability in such a wise manner. It`s always good to see the Canadian flag flying proudly. Whoever is your support crew at home can get a couple of free flags from your local MP so you always have a crisp, vibrant one to display. Cheers!
Cheers! And thanks for the flag tip! We'll look into that!
Also ... can you save us a spot there in case tRump invades Canada?
Haha, got a spot here for you!
Thanks for tuning in! If you'd like to see the rest of the recommissioning of Sea Dream of Clyde this fall, check out the full boat yard video here: ruclips.net/video/jpy5X3swOw4/видео.htmlsi=DejWSLwhsySZk_1w
That mounting on the side like that looks like a great way to do it especially because you can pivot them. We have a 27-ft sailboat we do some shorter cruising during the summer and have a single Renogy 200 watt panel on top of the bimini. It has worked well for us since 2021. We just have a portable freezer plus various electronics for navigation and laptops and that sort of thing. We find that things get charged up on a sunny morning by about 11:00 a.m. or even earlier. We have two AGM batteries and the 20 amp MPPT controller with the Bluetooth interface to monitor it. For this boat I don't think we need to add anything but it's a good idea for a future project. I noticed that the cable inside was a white cable and not the usual black solar cable. Was that a solar cable and if not how did you adapt it from one to the other. Did you just use a typical Marine fitting with a shrink wrap on it that you would crimp?
It sounds like you have a great solar setup. We've quickly learned that its always better to have extra solar input to help deal with those cloudy days, or days when our sails are blanketing the panels, too. Yep, we used proper marine butt connectors with shrink wraps over them. The white cable is 10 AWG marine grade. Within the white covering of that cable are the typical black and red cables that I connected the solar cable. They look like the ones here: www.amazon.com/marine-grade-wire/s?k=marine+grade+wire Cheers! Trevor & Kat
Happy New Year, Cat and Trevor. Safe travels in Nepal.
Cheers, Daryl!
Nice work. Thanks for the video. I replaced the solar panel that flew off the roof of my camper at the beginning of the trip down Baja. On the 28th of December, a 440 watt panel was installed in Loreto, BCS. The cost was more than I expected, but there is no where else I would spend my money. Big difference with newer panel and upgrading from 300 watts. Safe travels.
Glad to hear you got that sorted! It is really great to have more solar and not worry about the batteries so much. Cheers!
Very timely video for me - I'm actually doing the exact same thing on my boat with the same clamps and fittings. I'm also replacing the lower lifeline with a stainless tube to mount something to hold the panels up when horizontal, as well as secure the panels to when vertical. I also recently replaced the rest of my lifelines with dyneema and it was probably the easiest boat job I've done so far. Cheers.
It's a wonderful upgrade to do, isnt it?! I like the idea of also switching the lower lifeline to stainless tube, too. Happy to hear the dyneema is an easy job to do :) Thanks for tuning in!
I enjoy your channel. Interested in what do you use for cameras, mounts and editing software.
Ahoy! We're glad you're enjoying our videos! We keep things pretty basic and low cost. Our primary camera gear consists of a Canon M100, older DJI Osmo Action cam, and as of this winter, a DJI Osmo Action 4. As for mounts, we have a few different clamp mounts we found on Amazon, an extendable "selfie stick" that came with an our new DJI camera, and a tripod. For editing software, we keep it REAL simple and just use Imovie on our old school 2012 Macbook Pro that has been updated with a 1TB solid state hard drive. As you can see, we keep it simple and low costs! Thanks for your interest!
Enjoyed your video. At some point would you mind sharing what it cost you in the boat yard to stay there for the seven months? There’s several Boat yards I’m just doing my homework on what might fit me the best. Best of luck. May the wind always be at your back.
Hi Jason. Those costs are a good detail I should have included in the video! Here are some costs in USD as of November 2024 were as followed: 1) Monthly dry storage was $159.32, which is the cost for boats of up to 34/ft (ours is 33.5 ft!). For boats over 34 ft, it is $4.77/ft per month 2) The work yard rate $29.13 per day - that seems to be a flat rate regardless of boat size 3) Moving between the storage yard and work yard costs $46.98 per move. 4) Launching or being hauled: 0-15 tons = $7.21/ft 16-30 tons = $8.49/ft 31-45 tons = $10.24/ft 46-60 tons = $11.97/ft Some other costs that may be applicable: Pressure wash = $1.76/ft De-mast = $136.89 per hour Vehicle storage = $70.20/month Before and after being launched from the storage or work yards, you are offered up to 3 days of moorage on either end at their marina at a prorated monthly rate which was about $15/day for us. All in all, everything was really great with this marina and boatyard. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and most speak fluent English. The yards have 24/7 security, with regular patrols being conducted throughout the grounds. We are going to store our boat there again for a few months this spring before we depart for Hawaii, and if we end up in the this area again, we would not hesitate to store our boat with them! Cheers!
Happy New Year, Trevor and Cat, and happy sailings!
And happy New Year to you, too! Cheers from the Baja Peninsula!
Good to see you together again on the boat!!
Cheers! It feels great to be back to our home!
Good to have you back ! I was jonesing for some Sea dream of Clyde vids !
We're glad to be back! Lots more videos coming :)
Those stains may be from when the boat was power washed and some of spray came up through the galley sink drain.
In chatting with some fellow sailors in the boatyard, we found that others had the same within their cabins. We concluded that it formed was where some salt was left on surfaces. During the summer in San Carlos, the humidity actually gets pretty high, so we figure the salt allowed standing moisture to form and either mold grew, or it was dust the got in and made it little mud speckles! The strangeness of leaving your boat on the hard for months! Cheers!
What kind of antifouling paint did you use? How's it been performing? How much stuff did you bring down there with you? I need to bring a ton of stuff next time I'm down and I'm trying to figure out how to avoid buying a car (a land anchor). Fair winds!
Ahoy! Back home in British Columbia, we use Interlux CSC Micron which does well for two years in our home waters. However, despite having applied the Interlux just before we left to Mexico, we ended up having a lot of growth last season here. That said, we did sail over 2000 miles to get here, so we may have shed some it! This fall, we applied Comex ABC3 and after 6 weeks, there is zero growth so far. We'll give an update on how it's doing when we haul out again at the start of March! As for bringing stuff down, we were lucky to have had a friend who drove down from Canada and offered to bring some cargo for us. When we flew down, we also lugged a bunch of stuff! Its amazing how a bunch of little parts and supplies can add up! It sounds like you have your boat down here already, so you probably know that buying imported things in Mexico can be costly. With that in mind, we focused on bringing small stuff that we figured would be hard to find or have high import fees down here. We also brought lots of coffee since we find the good stuff here is very pricey or impossible to find! If you're based out of San Carlos, we heard there is a local lady who does regular courier trips to Phoenix (where there is a West Marine) who can pick up supplies for cruisers. Not sure what the cost looks like, but heard it is reasonable. Further, there are lots of people driving back and forth between Phoenix who often offer rides on the cruisers net and on the "whats up San Carlos" facebook page. Hope this helps!
Happy New Year from Arlington Wa. You two are such an inspiration!
Thanks, Mike! And happy New Years from Punta Colorado, Baja California Sur! Cheers!
Really enjoyed that, the fish camp is exactly what I have experienced on that side of the coast. Great folks.
We're so glad we took our time on that coast. Indeed, most everyone we came across were so incredibly friendly and generous. Thanks for tuning in!
Funny thing about the Grady White boat, it went with the BajaHaHa fleet 2023 and was "interesting"... Keep up the great work, all the best!
Woah! That thing went down the Baja Westcoast!? Crazy!
Got my boat stored ashore;glad to see I’m not the only one with a boat mess stored. 0ne step done and another begun
I'm pretty sure it was sad to say goodbye to SDOC but I agree that mixing life styles enriches both experiences. Could you please tell me where did you left your boat in dry storage and your experience? I'm looking for a place this year. Thanks in advance and happy new year!
We stored it at Marina Seca in San Carlos. Great service and prices. It was only about $150 month in the storage yard. Cheers!
Hope you adjust soon to land life . I understand the feeling even though I have never lived aboard.
It was indeed an adjustment. With Sea Dream being our primary home, it was pretty hard turning and walking away at the boat yard. However, we're back aboard after a fun summer!
Hi could you please tell me what your head lining is made from I need to change mine on my discuss many thanks from the uk
Hi Alan. It had already been replaced when I bought the boat, so I'm not certain of the exact material, but it is some type of vinyl. It is glued to thin plywood which is screwed to stingers glued to the cabin top. There will be some shots of the plywood panels off as I install some wiring in an upcoming video, too. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the time to reply that's what I have in mind to do something similar stay safe you two fantastic chanel keep up the good work ❤
You were in a shipping/traffic lane and they asked you to just move out further?
As far as we could surmise, we we're closer to a bunch of lobster pots than they liked... apparently, there are issues with other fishers stealing from adjacent lobster co-ops!
Love seeing the sailing and especially our favourite anchorage of San Juanico…can I respectfully suggest you improve your pronunciation of the Spanish terms. The vowels have specific sounds …for example Juanico is pronounced with using a long ‘e’ sound for the ‘I’ …Juan eee co. …Bah ee a for Bahia etc
Hi Sue, We're glad you're enjoying the videos! We can't believe we didn't hop up to San Jaunico until the very end of the season! We appreciate your feedback on our Spanish pronunciations. It's been a slow journey learning, and we have found that the cruisers life has made it a slow process since we are so rarely in towns and around Spanish speakers. That said, we've stepped up our game this season and are doing daily lessons on a great app called Mango from our library! Cheers!
@SailingSeaDreamofClyde totally get the learning curve. We purposefully put ourselves in situations that require us to use our meager spanish. There is a great RUclips channel called Butterfly Spanish and in one of her earlier ones she goes over how to say the vowels. My personal nemesis are the numbers.. Working hard on those!
We'll check it out! Cheers!

Thanks!!! 😊
Can you plz bring some of those fish tacos home with you next time? k, thanks :D haha
Haha! I'll email you some!
Thanks again Trevor and Cat for the nice video!
Our pleasure! Cheers fellow Discus owner!
Nicely done. If you download the Lavac manual, you'll find several installation variations. You can avoid the fill the bowl to empty the holding tank by flipping that lower valve around and thereby be able to use the single pump to actually pump out the tank. Mine has been going for 20 years and I still think Lavac is the best all around system. Have enjoyed your content .. hope you keep them coming!
I'll look into that. I certainly don't love the current pump out method! It seems that Lavac systems are rare in North America, so I had never seen one until I bought Sea Dream of Clyde. Like you, I am most certainly sold on it! Compared to the Jabsco heads, Lavac are most certainly superior, indeed. Lots more content coming! We are back to weekly videos now, so watch for new ones on Thursdays. Cheers! -Trevor
