POV: Carving & Tooling a Simple Scrollwork Belt Pattern
Follow along as I create a flowing, floral pattern on a piece of leather. This is a scrollwork or "whirlwind" belt pattern that can be used to make full length leather belts. This is just one of the many belt patterns I now offer as digital downloads on my website, girtyleatherco.com and this is one of many ways to bring this design to life!
All of the tools I use and for each specific purpose are listed within the video at each respective part of the process.

How to Use Bar Grounders for Leather Tooling
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 месяца назад
Bar Grounders are a tool option in leather carving/stamping that are used to fill in the background areas of a design. The impression that bar grounders leave in the leather is the look of tiny seed clusters. Bar grounders are a step up from other basic backgrounding tools used in the craft. They take precision and patience to accurately and consistently replicate quality results. To some, bar ...

I've been using candle wax, works for me 👍
Gorgeous work! And thank you for the step by step and all the extra details.

Hi i dyed my piece of leather with dark brown dye. Oil it before dying it. When i dyed it there was more dye on some areas. Any tips on how to get a perfect dye? I still need to sealed it with tankote. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you
Great job and good instruction.
Where did you get the personal maker stamp

Great format musically and visually! The tool descriptions and the camera angles are solid. Super crisp work with that whirlwind pattern. Thank you for putting in the effort! 👍
My decorative cuts still look off! My stamping is good but I'm my own worst critic when it comes to decorative cuts...
I honestly don’t know that I have any breakthrough ideas, but I do plan on making a video covering decorative cuts here soon!
Showing the tool is the best part of this video 👍
I will do my best to keep that up!
Your video production skills are really improving! I love how you list each stamp and size! This was your best video to date!
Thank you very much! I’m always trying to learn different production techniques and implement them when I can. Some videos may be a bit excessive but I honestly enjoy the editing process! Creating these videos is another form of art for me and it’s been a really fun journey
Thanks
Awesome video. Would love to see this become a series as part of your channel!
I intend on doing this with most of the belt patterns I offer, to help give an idea on what they can look like finished! I just need to make the time to do it haha
I have only ever made one Ranger belt to be honest. I probably need to work on more before I start offering any patterns for them. But I do greatly appreciate the support!!
Hi Ethan!. It's Richard from Australia here, great video as usual!. Do you prefer to oil the leather before tooling,or before dying,or after dying?. We always look forward to your videos, keep them coming!.
I typically oil after I finish tooling and the leather has completely dried out. I also oil before I do any dye work but that’s just my personal preference!
Looks good brotha. Started watching your vids and buying tools awhile ago and just did my first belt with your flower pattern
That’s really awesome, I’m glad to have been some help. I hope you’re enjoying the process!
Thank you for new video. Really enjoy your technique.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Where did you have your "Makers Mark" made?
It’s a brass stamp from Leather Stamp Maker. If you’re interested in a steel stamp then Steel Stamps inc and Grey Ghost Graphics are good options that I know of!
Great video. I like the pop-up of the tool your using and the Company. I haven't seen that in other leathercraft pods. Music also was fitting too.
I appreciate it! I tried to keep this one fairly simple but somewhat entertaining still
Awesome work!! Where did you order your brand stamp?
It’s a brass stamp from Leather Stamp Maker. Grey Ghost Graphics and Steel Stamps inc make very nice, steel stamps. I’ve considered getting a more traditional maker stamp from them one day, but I do enjoy this brass one!
@@Girtyleatherco I appreciate the info man. Agreed on Steel Stamp Inc. Thanks for sharing your leather knowledge.
Was the swivel knife work double speed?
The initial carving was triple speed lol, but everything else was normal!
Your work is superb! Appreciate the videos and tooling/stamping/carving demos. Thank you Girty Leather Co!
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
I have been searching for a nice simple video to help me out with this pattern and so THANK YOU for making the best one out there
Do you sell extra leather?
Do you sell just extra scraps of leather
I don’t generate much scrap but I do offer some boxes up a couple times a year. Whenever I have enough to fill a box I generally just post an Instagram story about it. But they typically go pretty quick
I'm dreaming whith Etham making an digital pattern of a Ranger Belt😊😊
when you hit on leather how take this shape permanently, using a glue under or this is feature of leather?
So leather can be tanned differently for different purposes and this particular leather is called vegetable tanned leather. It is tanned in a very natural way that makes it sort of stiff and rigid but allows it to be manipulated in many different ways. One of them is carving and tooling designs in it like this. It can also be wet molded into different shapes. Because of its natural/raw color it can be finished and colored pretty much however as well. It is different than what you would normally see as a vehicle interior or some other mass produced items
@@Girtyleatherco Thanks for response
Why does your leather get dark when you tool it? The one I got in my beginner kit stays light.
The quality of leather/tools can be a factor, but I would say moisture content and the pressure you are striking the tool with play a role more than anything. You don’t want the leather to be too wet or too dry, but it takes some time to find what you want. I prefer different moisture contents depending on which tools I’m using. Those mallet hammers that generally come in those beginner kits don’t usually pack as much punch compared to a weighted maul either. So the initial impression may not create a good burnish in the tool mark.
@@Girtyleatherco Wonderful explanation! I bet you are 100% correct. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.
Dude, your videos are truly inspiring
Great video on the hand tools you have , now you got me thinking to get these and improve my work quality
Dude, I was kicked out, and couldn't create an account! The browser stinks!
🔥🔥🔥
Always the best at giving knowledgeable information! Can’t wait for the bar grounding video.
Thank you, I actually dropped it awhile back! It’s one of my more recent videos
Great job
Very nice video thank you Deep breaths will help with shaking hands i used to kinda clinch up while doing things like this my mentor showed me this trick
Hi where can i find the tooling video of this pattern
Each sheet is 3 separate belt patterns. I currently only have one tooling video over one of the belt patterns I offer, but I plan on making more tooling videos very soon!
Love watching your videos man! Your tips have helped me produce higher quality products! Happy New year!
Happy New Year! Thank you for watching and hopefully I can keep providing some value in these videos
