Rigging 2D is much more complicated than in 3D, it is because all the points are just on one surface and therefore compacter than in euclidian space, this makes weight paint much more difficult. I know what I am talking about, I made the same model - a bird - once in 2D and 3D...
So I imported separate svg files for each body part. But each body part shows as being on layer1 in the Layers index list and also in the keyframe animation timeline at bottom it only shows one object at a time. How do I setup my objects to all show up as their own layers like you have and also all show up in keyframe timeline below as well?

Glad you found it, @fleetlee! For anyone else looking for it - LMB-click-and-hold on the Select Box option in the T-menu and you will see it pop up in a menu. If you cannot see the Select Box option in your T-menu, you need to turn on Selection Mode by clicking 1 of the 3 selection icons (points, strokes, points between strokes) that can be seen to the right of the Sculpt Mode tab.
