Your spreads are super cute. I especially like the September one. I do keep a reading journal. I use a B6 size so it is pretty small. This year I have done two books per page, but next year I plan to do one book per page so I have a little more room to decorate.I look forward to seeing your set up for next year.

Interesting and good points! I do agree that there is a lot going on in the publishing of the genre that misleads us as readers. This is also why I tend to no longer really trust comp titles😅 I completely agree that a book can also stand by itself, without comparing it to other stories. Also definitely agree with the points re FMCs, they often are portrayed as strong only because they have male characteristics, even though the female characters that are relatable are especially the ones that are strong because of their own personalities and regardless of this (like women irl). I feel like you two could write a book about all this (after that cozy spicy romantasy maybe?)😗 ETA: A book I would recommend is Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. It's not spicy, but very character-driven and with three really awesome FMCs. The emphasis is more on the fantasy aspects, and it's a loose retelling in some ways, which makes the plot a bit more "woozy" (I cannot come up with the proper word, sorry, not a native English speaker) than romantic, but it might be something for you gals!

Yes. There is a genre of cozy romantasy.

My problem with fmc’s and honestly female characters in fantasy media in general is that I think people forget that traditional female social traits can make a strong character. For example, women tend to be more observant than men and more community motivated. Where are the female strategist characters, the female war generals, the economists, the queens that are close to neighboring kingdoms but if that kingdom crosses her they are doomed, for she has already taken note of their weaknesses? Oftentimes I can’t relate to the female characters because they don’t reflect the woman I meet in my life. And the women in my life are strong. I’m not saying to stop making stories with women skilled in combat but there are definitely more ways to be strong besides being physically able. It gives space for the male characters to always be “better” because if all her strengths come from her being physically strong than authors just make the guy stronger

You make an interesting point that the inequality of experience is designed for a male gaze when the majority of readers are potentially female. Do you ladies have any idea why this might be? That, with the potential male dominance/ abusive elements that become all excepted as a mam being a … man. Does make you wonder if the ‘fantasy’ is not the world… or story…. but the sexual or dynamic fantasy of the writers?… perhaps they are writing under false pretences?! They have a an different agenda that has to have a fantasy world wrapped around it to make it work for them?

I agree the genre is over saturated and a lot of books are compared to other books or movies so they stand out and it can do a great disservice to the book. Personally I loved the Folk of the Air series and nothing that’s been compared to it comes close so now I steer clear of books that claim similarity cuz they always disappoint.

Great recs! I don't read a lot on audio, but I really enjoyed the books I've read that way. I tend to listen to non-fiction and read fiction with my eyeballs, but regardless, I really appreciate the availability of it, because sometimes it's so nice to just go through the day while someone tells you a story

My listening speed for audiobooks is between 2.0 or 2.5x the speed but it does depend on the narrator and what sounds best at what speed.

This year I have been listening to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. Read by Hugh Fraser. He’s brilliant and takes you back to the 30’s /40’s with a good murder to solve on top. He played Hastings in the TV series… but does the voice of poirot as well as the actual actor that played him. The audiobooks of Harry Potter are a great background easy read… very well done to.

Before this year I had only listened to a handful of audiobooks. I have listened to a ton this year. I really like memiors and other non fiction books as audiobooks. I dont like to read these physically but they are interesting. Rise of the Rockets Girls and 5 Days At Memorial really pulled me in.

I recommend the First Law trilogy (The Blade Itself, Before They are Hanged, and The Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie) on audio. They are narrated by Steven Pacey, and he brings those books to life. To be fair, I haven’t read them with my eyeballs, but the audio is great!

I love it! It turned out so great. I have used the stained glass in my daughters Harry Potter bedroom and glittery stars window film in my reading area. It really brings an area together and adds so much fun. We are going to Ren Faire in Nov. It is one of our favs too!

I haven't read a lot of these, but from the ones I have, I generally agree with you gals. I also would put up with a lot if I were to get a dragon myself👀 I probably wouldn't survive long, but it would be so cool! Though I would probably do better in Middle Earth as a Hobbit, given my lazy constitution (and I'm pretty much one height-wise anyway😂)

I loved the river enchanted and fire endless! I didn't really like a Novel love story either, however i really enjoyed the Dead romantics and The Seven Year Slip. The ex hex and kiss curse were really cute.
