My grandparents got me the new 2024 rules for Christmas and I told my dnd buddies and one was like “oh no those are trash” and I was just asking and asking him why and he wouldn’t give an explicit answer so I came to your video and ig these things are bad but IDGAF Abt them. I will play dnd how I want with whoever I want and I don’t really care
Well, that’s kind of the point of my video - the real problem is not the new rules. It’s that too many of us are trashing people for liking something other than what we like. I hope you enjoy the 2024 rules. After getting a chance to read them, I still have the same problems I brought up I. This video, but in general they are well done. Have fun!
The game is fun because the dice tell their story. If you really want to win as the GM, maybe you shouldn't be a Master. If you really want your players to win as the GM, give them inspiration. If you simply want to challenge your players as the GM, you can learn to make better encounters
I don’t disagree with anything you’re saying. I’m saying fudging a dice roll once in a while that you deem too negative to your players at the wrong time in the game does not make one a bad GM, nor is it cheating.
@shortreststudios but then, why bother with rolling dice at all? If you feel like your players should ALWAYS be able to succeed in a task, why would you make them roll? And if you're afraid your consequences are too harsh, why did you build the adventure to include those consequences?
First of all, you’re making an assumption that because I briefly mention this in the video it’s something I do regularly. It is not. Secondly, no one said anything about doing it all the time. That’s no fun. Third, why would anyone design only encounters that their players were guaranteed to win (that seems to be what you’ve suggested)? Also no fun. Fourth, for MANY people the dice rolls are not what make the game. They’re just part of it. Those GMs may feel differently about this than you do. Those parties are allowed to have fun with the game as they want. You’re welcome to your opinion and to play the game the way you want. I’m welcome to my opinion. They’re welcome to theirs. I live by the rules are a guideline. You have to stay away from DM vs Players mentality though Good stuff
"Cheating" would be an incredibly petty considering the point of the game is random chance deciding the victor. Along with good planning from players/opponents. If you feel the need to fudge a die roll, write a book or similar. You can change how things play out but altering the timeline because you didnt want something to happen is not respecting the players.
How can i have fun knowing the dm cheats just to make sure i cant lose?
I don’t think a good dm is fudging rolls to make sure you can’t “lose.” Maybe just to make sure you’re not completely out. But if you don’t want that, don’t play at a table that plays that way.
I DM with no DM screen, and I highly recommend it to all DMs. You and the players are creating a collaborative story together. Their dice rolls and yours should matter. Otherwise, the game loses meaning, and you're just playing Story time.
I homebrew most monsters, or base them on existing stat blocks. Literally impossible to meta-game at my table.
I was nodding so hard to all your points, you could have confused it with headbanging 😋 As a fan of Magic: The Gathering, Arkham Horror The Card game scratches all the right itches that MtG does, minus the competitve aspect. The way I see AHLCG and how I sell it to others is "what if MtG was solo or co-op, instead of competitive?".
From the Core Set allies, I consider Beat Cop to be Roland's best option. 1) Roland has ways to dish out damage and the +1 Combat from Beat Cop helps him do it more consistently. 2) The 2 Sanity soak from Beat Cop is important for Roland, given his precarious starting Sanity. 3) The automatic damage from the unconditional free triggered ability can be used in many key moments to Roland's advantage. If we consider the 2 XP upgraded version, the case for Beat Cop over Guard Dog is even stronger, in my opinion. I totally agree with the other cards you recommend for him 👌

How is this even a thing? In sweden it has always been. Rule #1: the GM is always right. Rule #2:should the GM be wrong, see rule #1.

Too stupid to cheat, but smart enough to flub the rules because of bad memory and fudge the die for a good story/fun game.
A good DM lets the dice tell a story. If your players knew you were fudging dice rolls, they probably wouldn't return to your table.
@@chrisg8989 I fudge their own roll in front of them. Sometimes the die decided to just be mean towards a player in particular so I let them reroll if they've only had a series of bad rolls recently or let another player roll for them.
@grandsome1 why even roll the die, then? If the results don't matter and you're gunna to make it up as you go anyway? If your table doesn't want to have a challenge or the possibility of death, that's cool. To each their own. I just don't see the point in using dice at all then. You're essentially playing make-believe with the illusion of a game structure around it.
@@chrisg8989 The die are there to act as referee, but sometimes the pseudo random generator fucks up or the throw is bad, and also dice can't think. 80-90% of the time their results make sense but then you have to use your human brain the 10% of the time their results hinder the game. It's that simple.
@grandsome1 hinder the game. How? The dice are there to tell the story. If anything, you're hindering the story by not honoring the dice and instead making the outcome into what you think is best. You're no longer playing a game. You're playing story time. If the dice decide one of the players is going to die, that is an amazing story moment. Not honoring that die is stealing that moment from your players and your story. You can always bring characters back if that's what the player and party choose to do. If you want the story to go the way you want it to instead of letting in evolve naturally by playing the game and responding to player actions and die rolls, then go write a book.
If the GM changes something to counteract metagaming, then they also metagame there and thus are no better tha the stuff they try to prevent. My suggestion would be the opposite, to roll with the metagaming, since obviously that is the fun the players want to have. Just like fourth wall breaks can be fun in comics and films. And well, you even say that if the GM plays against the players then that is based on a bias,and yes, acting against metagaming is a bias too. Also, I usually read the whole system, even when I am not the GM, but I prefer GM-less games, that is why I design my own system to be that way. And altering the deal or fudging dice and all that stuff seem to me mostly an issue with poorly designed systems and a lack of communication between GM and players of what everyone actually wants to get out of the hobby. Since if one side wants an interesting narrative experience and the other side a tactical one, then changes to the rules can lead to frustrations and thus clearly be no fun at all.
You are the exception to the rule. And while I believe a GM can cheat, I’m not sure metagaming is actually possible when your entire job as the GM is based on out of game knowledge.
@@shortreststudios Exactly because so much of the GM's job is based on stuff beyond the fiction is why it is metagaming that GM's do. But many things players do is also metagaming, lie group composition, class choices, the reason to have the characters work together and so on, all these are also metagaming and nobody is complaining about these things. That is why the notion that metagaming is only something negative that has to counteracted is just silly.
Great video on a misunderstood topic. However fudging is where I disagree, especially dice rolls. I think if a GM feels the need to fudge, something went wrong leading up to the fudged event. Those are usually great oppotunities to learn and grow as a GM as well. That said I don't mean to say never ever fudge. But the goal should be to not create situations where you feel the need to fudge. For example if there is an outcome to a dice roll which you cannot accept, then do not make or call for that dice roll. But that's just like my opinion man. And in the end every table if different and it's all just guidelines.
I mean, sometimes things just happen, and in a game 5e, for example, where player character death is often avoided (depending on the play style of the group), sometimes we fudge on rolls we had no choice but to make. Personally I generally prefer games where character death is expected. Thanks for your well though out comment!
@@shortreststudios I think if the group decides to fudge some outcome together, it is a different story. But if the GM makes such a decision in secret it feels a lot like cheating. Also if death isn't supposed to be common because a group doesn't like it, then simply make it so characters don't die unless the player wants it to happen. Daggerheart has some fantastic rules for that which work well in any system, for example. That is what the whole "make the game your own" thing means to me. Literally any mechanic can be thrown out, even character death if it's what everyone at the table enjoys.
About the only thing I ever fudge is critical hits sometimes. A few really good rolls on an encounter that isn't supposed to be much more than flavour for the world
100%. Fudging Dice completely ruins the game. If the dice don't matter and the rules are made up, then you're just playing story time.
Also, there's this in the Pathfinder 2e Player Core: The First Rule The first rule of Pathfinder is that this game is yours. Use it to tell the stories you want to tell, be the character you want to be, and share exciting adventures with friends. If any other rule gets in the way of your fun, as long as your group agrees, you can alter or ignore it to fit your story. The true goal of Pathfinder is for everyone to enjoy themselves.
DCC is awesome. I agree that character customization is less complex, but it is also more random. You will probably end up with a character you wouldn't have played in the first place. Also on the topic of race is class. I believe the point is that it's written from the POV of humans. And for them all halflings, dwarves, or elves are the same.
Fun video. Personally I don't think the magic system is all that confusing but I have been lucky to play a lot of different systems over the years. For me I think the big weakness of Dragonbane is the fact that FL have to manage both a Swedish and English edition at the same time. A lot of "English-isms" sneak into the Swedish version and I suspect its the same in reverse.

There are lots of great ones out there, and I certainly do not begrudge anyone having a fancier one! But for pure utility and affordability, it’s hard to beat these. Thanks so much for watching!
My usual go to is to make an encounter that i think is too hard, and let the fight be decided not by the actual stats, but when i think the story would be best served if the fight turned at a given moment. The paladin comes in, everyone is low both in hp and resources, have one spell slot left. The bard uses the last bardic inspiration to help him hit, the wizard had burned away large chunks of the boss's hp, but is out of spell slots, the ranger and the rogue are on death saving throws, and in that moment, you hear a crack of thunder as the paladin hits with that last divine smite, the light surrounding his hammer as it finally connects, cleaving the bosses head asunder!!!!!! That's a way to end a fight. it's one that gets a table cheering, and its one they will tell the story of for awhile! But, that boss still had 50 to 70 hp. The fight dragging on might have strictly been by the rules, but it makes people feel much less cool, its less dramatic, and its something I avoid and fudge often. Try this, and you will see a huge shift at your tables.
Another dice thing is 12-sided d4's. they roll nicely instead of having to be flipped. If you're unfamiliar, the 12 sides are 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,1,2,3 and 4. Amazon has them in 4 and 6 packs.

Commenting way late on this but appreciate the comparisons here. My group is looking at new systems to try out as alternatives to D&D 2024. DCC looks hilarious, fun, and unpredictable. Well, maybe predictable in that we're all going to die many times over...

I decided to make wrestling Goblins. Adjsuted to have better con and str at the cost of mental stats. I then implemented a system where they would grapple, team grapple, and then do damage based on athletics rolls. Was fun gimmick, but the party was stronger than I expected, so it didn't get utilized much. But I'm glad i tried something, because now i know better how to approach my next encounters :D
I build whole worlds for my players, where things happen, whether my players are there or not. And I work out battles to give my players real challenges. My players have quite a bit of freedom to decide where they want to go, and they can find useful things anywhere. But if they mess it up, there are consequences... Always 😂
Tbh one concept i like is just straight up making pcs as npcs The lv3 party went across a hobgoblin camp and are just about to fight their leader? Make the leader an actual pc with his own character sheet and make him a lv6 fighter, with character stats, feats and everything for the lv3 party to fight The bbeg has a group of bodyguards/enforcers and you wanna make this group be very challenging for the players? Make the group just be a straight up party of characters, a group that is basically an evil reflection of the party. The face on the party when the minotaur just suddenly smites the barbarian or the yuan ti tries to hit the wizard with eldritch blast and they notice this aint a regular fight anymore and they aint dealing with average monsters anymore but actual pcs will be priceless

How about a mushroom infested goblin, and when it dies, it decays like super fast, and from its corpse, new mushroom infested goblins grow, but not instantly, more like after 2 or 3 days.
As DM i always just do what I want. 😂 if I feel the enemies can use a spell, they use it. If they have low health...they don't, its dead when I'm done with you. Otherwise my party will destroy most bosses fast seeing as there's 10 of them.
OH GOD NOT TUCKERS KOBALDS For those who dont know this is a rather infamous story about a DM who would use kobalds with extremely efficient tactics to just remove their enemies Highly recommend looking this one up
Ohh. I like having some usually more stupid monsters use tactics, but only if they have a commander. So if their commander gets killed they will stop using the smart tactics. Or if they fight a generally smart enemy which has been trained, like elite soldiers of an kingdom for example the got their own stat blocks.
