Newport, Rhode Island was the place to summer for members of the 400, the rich, and social climbers.
This included the Astors, Whitneys, Vanderbilts, and Wetmores among many others.
They built some of the grandest mansions in the country, including the Breakers, Rosecliff, the Elms, and Marble House.

Can I have the sources you used?
Origin The term likely originated in medieval Spain as sangre azul. It may have come from the pale skin and visible veins of the rich and powerful families of Castile, who claimed to have "pure Gothic" descent. Several Spaniards and French settlers settled southern parts of the US.
Buying a ticket to watch rich people have a party is crazy lol
Thank You very much for this wonderful tale of history. 💝💖
At 1:12, you make an error in showing a painted photograph of The Towers in Narragansett, RI while describing it as Newport. Upsets the locals! It would be great to credit the art you display with the artists’ names and dates. Many homes were shown with no description or date at all. And, please learn the correct pronunciations!
Oh, what fun, that was ❤❤
Pleasant voice, but too much up talk. Every sentence sounds like a question 🙄
She was overly obsessed with frivolity while her people starved. Instead of helping her people, she partied with that money. Shameful.
Sorry but she just had simple features maybe in those days they thought she was beautiful
TRUTH. And the paintings make her look prettier than she was. In actual photos, she is plain af... and she looks a bit cross-eyed
Nice video, but please make narration less sing-songy...phew
Would love to know the painting at 6:06 in the video.
Thank you for posting this wonderful view of Gilded Age Newport's past! I hope to visit this beautiful town one day.
Regrettably, many of the images shown here are not from Newport.
This woman’s voice is too annoying to listen to. What a shame.
Did she have a Catholic funeral??
This woman's voice is annoying.
AI ?
Omg please have a new person narrate this her voice is scary and annoying I wanted to hear it all but she was too much and scary to listen to
I just love the paintings!!
❤❤❤❤
Excellent video, thank you so much 💐
Interesting, thanks!
And now the taxpayers of Rhode Island pay the bills for the upkeep and "maintenance" of these "cottages". Considered a necessity to keep the tourists entertained, the rich owners just can't afford to pay for the cottages they own. Imagine that??? Buying a house you can't afford to fix. The rich just are too poor to spend their own money to fix their own homes.😅😮😮😊😊😊
Nauseating that people were so rich while so many others were so poor. Income taxes fixed that.
Nothing has changed
Very interesting excellent content!!
My Son received the National Sportsmanship Award for tennis at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport about 20 years ago. We were lucky enough to attend a dinner at The Breakers along with all the greats. Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, McEnroe, Edberg, Borg and even Prince Albert of Monaco. It was truly a night I will never forget!!
Wow, what an amazing experience that must’ve been!
Just visited as a tourist. Congratulations to your son. He earned a unique distinction. Im pretty sure i will never dine at the breakers. Hoping Red Lobster.
Thank you for mentioning Philadelphia as being the home of some prominent people during the Gilded Age. Hence the desire for summer homes mattered to them!! Phila. often gets ignored wrt the Gilded Age because of its proximity to NYC. Nevermind that Philadelphian George Widener was the richest American at the time of his death on the Titanic in 1912.
Let them eat cake!
Love the video!!!! Very well done.👍
Subbed. I'm glad the RUclips algorithm introduced me to your channel
The Petit Trianon was not built FOR Madam Pompadour. Louis XV had it built for himself at the suggestion of Pompadour.
Very nice and beautiful pictures.
I live in Rhode Island and this mansion there is amazing you like your 5 or 6 of them. They are amazing ❤😊The Breakers are haunted by the ghost of the Husband and wife. I piece of advice if you go on the Cliff Walk be safe, it can be tricky.
Thanks. Sounds interesting.
I visited Springfield I’llinois 15 years ago and walked through the Lincoln home, Attorney office and the Lincoln museum. I love the history but never did I hear about her spending spree only that she would cry, throw fits. They called her crazy?
Where's the beach?
It's New England..a lot of rocks, little sand. Go to New Jersey..miles of smooth sand.
@@MarshaSweigart How did you know?
Aaaah The Breakers. Your opening picture I knew in a heartbeat. I'm not gilded but lived in Newport for a year then 6 years in a Victorian in Portsmouth. Aquidneck Island as it is known differs from the mainland by being magical!
Hopefully to show the Hamptons (in Long Island) soon.
Tartarian empire
Thanks ❤😊
Wonderfully done! Loved this ty!
I can’t imagine being blessed with such an angelic voice as yours.
Oh thank you!
Your elocution and diction is almost flawless and very easy on the ears. Thank you so much for not using music to distract from the lovely musicality of your voice. I enjoy your videos very much, and your charming voice even more! 😊
Thank you so much! You are very kind!
Excellent and informative video. The photo at 1:08 is Narragansett, RI and not Newport. The photo at 3:22 is the ballroom of Whitehall (Flagler) in Palm Beach.
The death of the Gilded age was by the bankers the start of the war and the income tax was a way to suck the wealth from the families. No place to hide the money from them. When one looks at the barons and their death they left their estate to their wives but in almost all cases they did not have the education to deal with all that responsibility so they were lured into being fleeced by others until many went broke. and ended up alone.
Love the 🆕 video ❤❤😊
Thank you!
Thank you for watching! I previously made a video on the mentioned Petit Trianon at Versailles if you would like to learn more about it. Like, comment and subscribe for more videos.
Lived and worked in the Buffalo area for over 30 years. Have watched the city decline into crime and poverty. You get what you vote for Buffalo.
Do understand why the decline happened?? Capitalism is why.
You can stop the veiled racism now. Trump is tellin you that you can. Go for it. Stop hiding.
First of all, it was nice to hear someone pronounce Calver Vaux's name properly, since most people say " Vox" instead of " Voh". I lived in Buffalo for six years and I loved it. I'd move back in a heartbeat if the right opportunity came along.
Vaux was English, not French, and "Vocks" is the correct pronunciation.
@Ripleyripper Nope. It's pronounced "Voh". Lots of English names aren't pronounced the way they're spelled, and in every architectural history class I've taken the professor pronounced it "Voh".
There is so much beautiful housing that has just been chopped into house-apartments for slum lords. It is very sad. So much potential being wasted.
Beautiful, and what nice comments. Pity you don't say anything about the furniture, which to me would be very interesting. Is it still the original furniture?
Sorry, can't listen to this voice
