Fishing trips based out of San Diego, California
Great Yellowtail Fishing at the Coronado Islands with @finsnspines
Coming into this trip, I didn’t know how it was gonna go. The YT were going bonkers at the Coronado islands a couple weeks earlier but had pretty much shut off a couple days before this trip. I was a little nervous as to how it was going to go, as I wanted to show the guys from Fins N Spines some good San Diego fishing.
While browsing the youtube a while back, I came across Fred and Jeremy’s channel fin n spines. Their channel focuses on calico bass fishing (fins) and hooping for lobster (spines) out of Dana point. They seemed like cool guys so I reached out to them to see if they wanted to fish together. I was really curious what it would be like to get two videos from the same trip. Jere...

Yes, we really are sight fishing for white seabass! Five of us drove to Oxnard to fish two days in a row on the Graylight out of Channel Islands Sportfishing for white seabass. We fished during the 1 fish per person limit and we limited out the boat both days. We caught 30-50 lb seabass on flukes #graylightsportfishing #ciscosportfishing #whiteseabass #fishing #oxnard

I recently sat down with Louie Zimm with the Federal Pacific Fisheries Management Council. We discussed quite a bit about how the pacific rockfish stocks are managed. We also talked about the new California Rockfish Regulations. In this video we discussed: - How rockfish are monitored for the purpose of maintaining stocks and setting regulations - How are quillback affecting California's rockfi...

Pacific Gray Whale Encounter off Point Loma
brought a knife to a gun fight…
noticed that mostly because of reel problems you used a bunch of reels. but you used the Calcutta first an later an that was the only setup that you didn't fight a seabass on. do you think the gear ratio made the reel to slow??
I do like the high gear ratios better but I don’t think it made a difference on getting bit. The secret to getting a fish this day was to make a cast in the right spot.
Suffix 832 is a fantastic braid
You da man. I'm watching this as I fish a kayak derby in monterey
Much love! Good luck!
Would’ve had it
This video should have thousands of views! Great trip. Such a great commercial for Mexico
Very nice!
Thanks!
So awesome to see it all come to fruition! Whether spotting on the meter or the surface.
The best!
Man, I love finding fish!
One fishy lost it almost pulled you almost sure it was one of the bluefin that been hanging around the island. Good job today guys.
Ahhhh. The prayer that leaves you hanging FOREVER! Good times 💪
Damn Calicos! The rockpile produced bigger quality fish a few weeks ago as well as there were tuna hanging on the east of the south island. To top it of I landed a 130 pound striped Marlin
I was down at the rockpile a couple weeks ago in the wind. It produced but it was a little bumpy till we got into the lee of South Island.
Please tell me I'm not the only one, alone in his home, audibly groaned and cursed.
Haha…. We caught a bunch of fish this day so the pain wasn’t so bad…
Tuna. I’ve never seen a yellow spool someone.
No, it was a big YT. We were right off pukey at the Coronados. We had already caught a bunch of yellows and people were catching them around us. This fish was definitely in the bigger side but it shouldn’t have spooled me. Lots of line out, there wasn’t that much backing, maybe a lightish drag….
those dam sharks don't play out there... gotta be fast
This was just a big fish. The hook bent. That’s how this one was lost….
Can’t be hyped for a fish?😔
Gotta keep the hot spot private 🤷♂️
When too many boats fish these fish, sometimes they get lockjaw. Best to try and get a couple on the boat before the secret gets out….
I definitely need practice lots of practice on gaffing fish. Low high five we had a blast!
That’s how you learn…. Haters gonna hate.
That’s not a bass!!
He got shushed 😂
With all due respect red shirt needs some gaff classes......dead center top loin every time. **Message to red shirt........I'm also sitting on my couch and you're out there killing it!!!!!!! Great video! Thank you!
Yeah, we gave him a lot of crap. Every time you hear me say, “it’s on the boat”, what I’m really saying is, “you screwed up the meat but at least you didn’t break the fish off”.
What a trip! Great video. Thank you again Louis. Forever in the memory banks 💪
Till the next one!
Stupid bass lol love it.
Let’s goooooooooooooo
Should’ve brought out the sniper ;) It’s been my confidence lure since I saw your video; landed 2 YT and 1 BFT on a recent Coronados trip aboard the Liberty and limited out on the YT on the Belle a few weeks after.
I caught a yellow in the colt sniper the other day. The fish were on the meter and not eating our baits so I dropped it down and bam! Hooked a fish on the fast retrieve!
Nice! I used it on the slide when the captain was metering fish and dumping chum but they just wouldn’t come up. I have noticed however that a yo-yo will trump the sniper during a low current/anchored situation.
Fred, Jeremy, great fishing with you both. I’m glad we were able to piece a good day together! I’m already looking forward to next time!
Such a blast. Thank you for all the cherry popping and wonderful company out there on the water! 👊
I see you have a bad knot. Connecting your line to your spool. You definitely want to fix that
Good attitude
Don’t bring a pocket knife to kill a bear
Toss that reaction tackle braid in the trash and get some quality stuff. You’ll get a lot more on that reel. Also helps to spool it tight so you don’t have all that wave and more capacity
Nailed it! I did this right after this trip.
😮
I didn't even know yellow tails got that big lol
Un vrai champion !!!! Bravo mec 👍😂
Awsome clip i love it when they run like this , just solid runs didnt see any head deep head nods possibly a tuna in the mix? Either way looks like a fun day out there tight lines bruddah
We were close to the island at the Coronados. We had already caught a bunch of YT and there were a bunch of people catching YT all around us…. I’m 99.9% sure it was a big yellow. There were a bunch of issues that led to getting spooled
Drags increasing when the spool gets smaller.something to think about
When that line slips on the spool it’s the worst. Luckily I’ve noticed without a fish on. Glad you got that one 💪
You and me both!
Dude like a kid fishing pond stocked with WSB! Incredible
Yeah, 30-50 lb WSB!!
How did I miss this notification! Yeah buddy 👊
What lb line and what OZ leadhead? Nice video!
50 lb braid with a short (3’) 30# leader. Then a 3/8 or 1/2 oz head. Shawn and Sam liked the simple lead head with no wings. We fished lighter lead heads in this trip because the fish were high in the water column.
@artemisadventures1734 thank you kind sir!
If you hook into a fish that is causing this to be a issue then the fish you are going for is oversized for that reel 😅 and I understand that some reels have a synchronized gear but that is just over engineering to give you peace of mind
1,000% agree with this!!!
epic bite
What a trip! When you cast the flukes out, do you sink them and do a steady retrieve or jig it? Goin in a trip next week and just wondering!
It depends. Usually, I would let it sink, then slowly wind it in bouncing it off the bottom. This trip, we had to work it faster because the fish were just below the surface. For your trip, I’d ask the crew on your boat how to work them. Or even what to use. Every trip is different.
Buy a tranx haha
I know, I know. They are the best. Just so expensive. I do have a 500 on a 9’ stick for throwing the jig for smallish fish. I really like it.
@@artemisadventures1734 epic video!! So cool seeing tailing sea bass!
You could always set you drag past the strike mark and run it at full potential....those big forkies will test the average guy
Yeah, not too far though. It was only 30 lb test. We caught a bunch this day so this one didn’t hurt too much.
I got lucky a few weeks ago and caught a 32-pounder off El Segundo on a blue hookup bait while I was targeting sand and calico bass. Never heard people talk about what great eating WSB are.
They do taste great, right? They’re pretty high on my list of favorite fish to eat.
damn in gundo? never knew people fished over there lol
that’s awesome though
Fish on becomes longest cast ever
Haha
great video. just wondering what were the specifics of what Sean advised you to buy (fathom + phenix inshore models??) did he give an reasons?
He didn’t give me exact specs. Shawn and Sam both said they liked the fathoms and they had a couple Phoenix boat rods. Here’s what I picked up. I love this stick for a heavy bait casting rod. Phoenix fast action USBCL-C 800H and a Penn Fathom HS levelwind with 50 # braid
What a great trip!
One I’ll never forget!
Congrats on the sea bass, Grey light is not a cheap boat to go on. I stopped buying daiwa because the seized bearing is something I witnessed more than once on a few of my fishing buddies reel. I have never had this issue with the shimano reels I own or my friends own.
I had that reel for a long time and pulled on a lot of YT with it. Overall, it was a good reel. I replaced it with a penn fathom level wind though…. I have a hard time spending the big bucks for Shimano on a small reel. They are the best though. I agree there.
Put some 30 lb braid on that sucker!
Agreed. I did need more backing and lighter backing. I’m gonna go with 50# and fill it up more than what’s on there.
Dude did you see my POV in our last video of this event happening? It’s right at the 23:28 mark of our vid. This all happened SOOO fast. You get bit and it starts taking off and I’m unsure if I should reel in all my line to back the boat up or just run it over lol
Yeah, it’s all good till it’s not. At least we caught plenty of others so this didn’t hurt so bad.
@@artemisadventures1734 True that! 👊
