Adventures aboard SV MINUET
Франция
Добавлен 1 ноя 2022
Adventures aboard SV MINUET highlights my continuing quest to explore the seas and inland waterways of the world, and to see what the world has to offer. My aim is to meet people and places taking with me the community that I hope to build up under the title of Adventures Aboard SV MINUET
I bought a Southerly 95 because the southerlies have a retractable keel enabling them to stay afloat in very shallow water (55cm) or even to run aground and wait for the tide to come back up! Perfectly at home on the high seas, a drying harbour or cruising the inland rivers, canals & lakes.
Join me on this exciting adventure and let’s see where our dreams will take us.

Monty Restoration Aug '24
Fascinating update of the latest developments in the restoration work on the English side of the Montgomery Canal at Crick Heath being undertaken by the Shropshire Union Canal Society. The Monty passes through my home village of Pant to the Welsh border at Llanymynech.
These pages from the Canal and River Trust make interesting reading. To my understanding, different are employed according to the porosity of each stretch of restoration. A few links to things referenced in this film:

Windy Sail in TOKI

A flashback to a wild and windy sail in my other boat TOKI. TOKI is a traditional long keel racer/cruiser sloop, built in 1953. Check out her RUclips Chanel here: @buchananseaspray26toki91 In this video TOKI keeps a straight line whilst crashing through waves on a short sail from Le Port du Légué at St Brieuc to the Port d’Armor at St Quay Portrieux in Northern Brittany.
Well done ,keep going ,look forward to the next episode
Thank you, next update will be towards the end of August!! Cheers.
Sun, sea n sunshine. Go on yir sel. I like a good pedal about too. I saw a bike shoehorned into your forward cabin. Happy adventures. I wonder if you'll get figs soon on your wee fig tree. 👍
Ha, that was the bike trailer! You can just about see my electric bike parked up on the canal-side in the shot of me going from the solar panels on the deck back to the cock-pit. I bought the trailer to carry the shopping, the laundry and jerry cans of diesel for the engine whilst traveling down the canals from Brittany to the med! I’m spending a lot of time in the UK at the moment to care for my parents but hope to get back to the boat as regularly as possible. Cheers for the comment!!
To each his own. I couldn’t live on an old boat, but enjoy
I understand an old boat like Minuet is not as comfortable as a modern boat be it a sailboat or a canal cruiser but it’s all I can afford and I love sailing too so I have the best of both worlds to some extent. It’s just a pity I’ll never be able to bring her down the Monty, perhaps I’ll have to trade her in and look for a small narrow boat to do that!
@@svminuet at least you are living the life you want. I begged my wife to sell everything cash out retirement invest and live off dividends. Buy a inexpensive house in a cheap corner of Canada for our stuff. Buy a nice 40ft sailboat and cruise the world. We have the money to do it until we die, comfortably. She will not leave her Toronto suburban house and the rat race she so hates so much on a daily basis. I envy you sir, something I try to never do. If I could I would….
Awesome channel, really nice to see from the air too thanks for the videos and I want a hat like yours 😃🤠🎩
Thank you! I'm looking forward to volunteering again next weekend 26/27/28 July, cheers!
Really interesting to see how much work goes into restoration of a canal. It will become a huge asset as soon as it reopens.
It really will!
Brilliant video! I really enjoy seeing all the work going on in my old “homeland”! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers!
You do make a good pleasant video. Totally enjoy all others done Chris x
Thank you Chris, very kind of you to say so. Brian.
They're doing ever so well!
Great to see the progress
I think the problem with the driver was that you briefly turned the camera to film him and said 'smile your on candid camera', if you hadn't done that he would most likely have carried on. When one is filming you should really be respectful for others privacy (regardless of the laws relating to what you can and can't do). In this case you could have easily avoided the issue, maybe consider this next time.
Thanks for that, as soon as I saw the car was stopping, I turned the camera away from the driver and said “Smile you’re on candid camera” more to myself and the camera before the car had stopped and as the gentleman was winding down the car window. But I take your point, one must always be respectful to others whilst filming in public. Thanks for your comment.
P.S. I don't know if you'd be interested in joining Railway Ramblers - a nationwide group dedicated to walking disused railway tracks (with permission where required). Sections around Llanymynach (not too far from you) link with the canal and have some surprising extant buildings! 🙂
Interesting proposition! I’ll look into that. But my time is quite limited I’m afraid. I care for my parents so have to snatch a few hours at a time. Also, I could get hooked by the railway and trains bug!! Thanks again!
@@svminuet It was just a thought - I used to be involved with and enjoyed many walks with the Wales group. Best wishes looking after your parents!
@@trainandbikefan Thank you!
Da iawn! both the film and the 'winding hole' comment 🤗
Thank you!
Diolch un fawr!
I'm glad you took my comment in the positive way it was intended 🤗.... a couple of things about the Monty you might not find elsewhere. Tom Rolt - joint founder of the IWA and saviour of the Tal-y-llyn railway made his home in and wrote "Narrowboat" aboard 'Cressy' a converted working (I believe fly-boat) which had previously been owned by the Peate mill family along the said canal. If you want to get an idea of the canal back in the day, the 1998 BBC production of Our Mutual Friend includes Paul McGann using one of the locks - where a murder takes place!!! (The giveaway being the very unusual wheel lock paddle gear). Hope you also make it to the Mon-Brec (originally two canals:- The Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal, and the Monmouthshire Canal) where there are substantial remnants of the iron master 'Cosher Bailey' and his activities. Hope that's not too much information 🤔
Wonderful! Thank you so much! I shall look up this info. I was born in Llandrinio and know a few stretches of the Monty canal quite well between Welshpool and Four Crosses but the rest is a discovery of great delight!
The turning points are "winding" holes as they originally used WIND power to push the stern round. Please dont wind us up 😉
Thanks for that, I have a windlass on my boat but that has nothing to do with the wind, as far as I’m aware! I’m loving discovering the inland waterways of the UK.
It’s a black elderberry. Sambucus nigra is the latin
Thanks, my mum said I should have known that !!!
Well done Colin ,as you rightly say it will be brilliant when completed such dedication by the volunteers they should be quite rightly proud of themselves
Yes, they're going great gunns! I'm Brian, bye the way! Thanks for the comment!
@@svminuet sorry about that i had a senior moment !!
No Worries!
Great video! Fascinating to see all the hard work going on to restore the canal.
Many thanks, I'm lucky to be so close! It's so exciting to see the canal being restored right outside my back door!!
Agreed from an ex NARROWBOATER it always annoyed me to 😊😊
Just found your channel and enjoyed the video. Just been on the Monty myself which is beautiful.
It really is! Thank you !!
Interesting video, but awful "elevator musak".
I'll try and do better next time!
I suppose plentiful supply of cinder blocks as they are a recycle product.
good video, 2:21 that job is quite well done. greetings.
Thank you! Cheers!
Please NOT "Barges" they are "Narrowboats"
OOps, yes, I have taken that on board! I'm learning as I go!
I'd like to know if this moisture barrier cinder block treatment is studied to last for many generations as the previous canal construction has. The moisture barrier being held down by solid cinder blocks looks beautifully simple, but the cinder blocks hold water that will break them apart when the water freezes. Fresh water starts to expand below 4°C until if freezes with 9% expansion. Since the blocks are being used as hold down weight and protection for the moisture barrier it is likely thought if it they break apart into gravels they will still perform their task. As nearly buoyant small water logged gravels they can be easily picked up and spread by canal boat wakes. Since much of the water in the canal will remain liquid the damage will take place around the water line which would move downward with poor water level care. I see the cinder blocks are not going as high as the what would look like the normal water line.
I also think this will not last as long as clay. It will outlast me though for sure.😣
nosey cupid stunts
Why did they go with block lining like that? I'm guessing a lack of clay quarries.
I don’t know! I’m going to volunteer next weekend, I’ll ask them!
@@svminuet have you? 🙂
Yes, I did speak to some of the volunteers about it, the puddle clay option offered a traditional solution but would require large amounts of material to be excavated and was vulnerable to future erosion and leakage. These pages from the Canal and river Trust make interesting reading. To my understanding different methods of lining are employed according to the porosity of each individual stretch of restoration. I understand that after testing it was found that the stretch of canal just south of the Crick Heath basin and bridge will require no lining at all! But that just 50 metres further down the canal leaked like a sieve and is the section of canal now being lined as we speak! (June 2024) canalrivertrust.org.uk/refresh/media/thumbnail/9897-different-ways-of-lining-canals-les-clark.pdf
I wonder why they’ve build up onto the bund rather than laying it through and putting a clay bund back, surely that’s lots more work when it comes to the next section
Wow! .. Apparently that bit leaked like a sieve and the bit next to it did not leak at all so they decided to do it that way… dhhh Your comments please!
A couple of 'barges'?!
yes
He meant narrow boats 😂😂
Yes, I mean narrowboat, lol!! As I said, I need to get up to speed with the technical terms and pronunciations… They say ‘Barge’ in French and also ‘Péniche’. Have we started calling them narrow-boats since they’ve been used as homes more than transport barges?
@@svminuet No.
@svminuet no narrow beam boats are narrow boats, broad beam barges. Narrow beam, locks tunnels etc about 7 feet wide, broad beam about 14 feet.
I used to go to Llanymynech C of E primary school just up the road from the loo! I remember it being built! I had a friend who lived in one of the houses just to the right of the building!

I’ve only just found your channel and I’ve really enjoyed the videos about the canal in Pant and Llanymynech. Having lived in the two villages it’s nice to be able to see the area again (I moved to South Wales many years ago). Keep up the good work!
Thank you for your message, it’s been great fun re-discovering my local area! I’ve spent the best part of twenty years living in France and discovering the French Canals. There’s a lot going on here with the restoration program for the Montgomery canal so I’m looking forward to covering that and visiting other places of interest in the locality, best regards, Brian.
The Wharfingers house is situated at Carreghofa locks near Llanymynech see write up below
Thank you !
Approx 40 odd years ago we rented The wharfingers cottage on the Montgomery canal in Llanymynech a couple of years running when it was a holiday cottage let it was on the first section of the canal to be renovated it was next to the lock and a bridge way up behind the cottage was the site of what looked like the old railway marshalling yard your vlog brought back some happy memories ,i was hoping you would pass the cottage but you turned and went in the opposite direction direction maybe one day you might pass the cottage , many thanks for evoking my very happy memories Terence hammond
Hello Mr Hammond, is that the cottage above Carreghofa Locks? I’ve never been there either but I intend to walk that stretch from Llanymynech to the Vyrnwy Aqueduct soon. Thank you for your message. Brian.
Looking good, great progress
Thank you, I’m actually really enjoying being back in the UK!! I caught the canal bug whilst traveling down the canals of France & Brittany! And I will be visiting other stretches of the canal, restored and yet to be restored in the coming weeks!
I was filming on the Chesterfield today, I use a drone and a woman who worked for the council tried to tell me I wasn’t allowed to fly a drone in the whole of Derbyshire. I think she confused the council with the Civil Aviation Authority. I soon explained how wrong she was and we had a pleasant conversation after but it does show how even council people have little knowledge of the rules around filming on public land.
Yes, the rules are quite clear. Keep your feet on publicly accessible land and your (less than 250g) drone away from prisons and airports. The CAA are very helpful and will advise if one is in doubt! Heavier drones need need a pilot ID and are restricted by distance to buildings ... I think!
Great video it will look great when its back in water
Thanks, yes it sure will!
Great video, well done and ignore the person in the car.
Thanks, he wasn't difficult to ignore :) :) !!
There’s one on every corner but just recently there does seem to be more corners, the man’s an idiot.
Great video, thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for this video . I lived in Knockin village for a short time & explored the surrounding area . But never made it to Llanymynech I missed a gem . Very interesting I hope you do a follow-up video when the canal is restored its a beautiful location with an amazing history.😀👍
