1911 Full Length Guide Rod Field Strip & Reassembly

This is a demonstration on how I disassemble and reassemble a 1911 that uses a full length guide rod instead of a GI style guide rod. This is the way I’ve found works best for me.

Quickest way to field strip and reassemble a 1911 (Parody)

This is the FASTEREST way to field strip your 1911 handgun. This is for .45 ACP 1911s ONLY. If you do this with any other 1911 JMB will come down from heaven and give you a lick.

In my opinion, Colt factory finishes have not been as good since the early '90s. Too many little imperfections for a top tier manufacturer.

I don’t understand many of the negative comments here. While the title might be a little off (I don’t see this method helping prevent an idiot scratch), the creator did a fine job presenting an alternative takedown method for a tightly fitted 1911. Most of my 1911’s I field strip the traditional way. My Colt Hawk has a fitted barrel bushing. No way I can turn that thing without a wrench and my understanding was the field strip procedure demonstrated here by the author helped preserve that tight fit. I could be wrong. I almost always am. Either way, great video and a beautiful Colt.

I agree with @amclean1948 That is the worse and hardest way I've ever seen to take down a 1911. Furthermore, I buy my guns to use for my enjoyment, it's a tool, it will get some scratches in normal use. I don't polish the face of my hammer either!

I've never seen this method of disassembly and as a former Navy Torpedoman that worked with Gunners Mates during the early 80s, I never saw them break down one like this ever. Gunners Mates ran the armory on ships and shore bases.

A much better way is to lock thr thum safety so the slide is locked from moving rearward, then push down on the sprinf plug and rotate the bushing to 8 o clock. That releases the spring plug. Now you can take the safery off and move the slide back to the slight half moon to the slide stop hole. That way, you're not fighting the recoul spring tension. Your way is much harder because you're fighting the recoil sprinf tension and trying to insert the slide stop. The proper way to push in the slide stop is to use two thumbs (both hands). One thumb pushes the slide stop by the front portion where the round pin goes through. Another thumb pushed on the part that pops in and prevents the rear part from sliding across the frame, causing the idiot scratch.

The slide stop plunger on my Springfield Mil-Spec is always reluctant to give way to allow the slide top to snap into place. I have taken to using a flat precision screwdriver to push the pin back so that the slide stop snaps back into place. And, like so many other people are saying, I always take out the recoil spring first and replace it and the plug last. I use a Wilson Combat flat wire full length guide rod and recoil spring in my 1911.

I have never disassembled my 1911's like this. The last thing I do is install the slide spring, why fight the spring while trying to assemble. To each his own I guess...

Nice video! Some bushings are hard to rotate. I have an Ed Brown and and Smith & Wesson PC that you need a bushing wrench. There are some good ones that have an extra tab on the wrench that keeps the recoil spring plug from flying as you are rotating the barrel bushing. regards, NS.

Can you make this any more complicated? Still trying to justify the first video? 2:55 - Slide the link down before sliding the slide on the frame. If the link is up, hold the gun upright and the link will go down. If the link is too tight to fall, push the spring in. The only reason to pull the slide back off is that you messed up with the link behind when you put the slide on. 3:42 - I bet you worry that cars from the freeway might fly off the road and hit your house, too, right? Most can hold the plug with their thumb and move the bushing in one motion easily. If you can't, or have fat thumbs, that is what the tang on the front of the magazine is for. Use the tang to hold the plug down. 5:32 - for everyone watching, this is an example of finding a way to do something different than what the designer said to do that doesn't simplify but instead complicates things.

You really make this hard on yourself. Release spring tension first when breaking down. Add spring after inserting pin when reassembling. You look like you've got a hand full of alligators doing it your way.

😳 OMG, just disassemble and reassemble weapon the correct way .. If the barrel bushing tight, then disassemble weapon like this, and break free the barrel bushing. Re-form bushing tight area with various needle files , and thoroughly clean area of slide where bushing inserted. Apply a tad of lithium grease at slide bushing insert area, and reassemble weapon the correct way. You're not going to hurt weapon . Tight barrel bushings are common with various 45 cal models. 😊
