These are just some home-made videos of me playing and singing solo with an acoustic guitar. I perform lots of covers and traditional songs and have a few originals.
Angry Young Man (Steve Earle)
A great song from Mr. Earle's stupendous album "Exit 0," which was an extensive influence on teenage me to play guitar and try to sing. Thanks--Tim.

Not Fade Away on a Martin DR-2
Просмотров 802 часа назад
This is my old Martin that I played for over 20 years. It needs frets and strings and binding work, but it still somehow sounds pretty decent. This is a cover of the Buddy Holly Classic, turned into a wild jam vehicle by the Grateful Dead. Thanks Tim.
I've Been All Around This World (Traditional)

First recorded by Grandpa Jones in 1946, this great traditional outlaw song has been performed in many ways by a bevy of different artists. I learned it from Jerry Garcia's version. It has always been a fun tune to do Tim.

This is a cover of a great tune by this fantastic duo called Mapache. Please check out their music and support them live if possible. This is a redo of a version I recorded on my phone and posted here. Thanks and Merry Christmas Tim.

Loretta (Townes Van Zandt)

Townes Van Zandt wrote around 100 songs in his life, and they were all pretty significant. There just wasn't a more poetic songwriter than Townes, and this particular tune certainly highlights that.
Red-Haired Boy (Fiddle Tune)

This is an ancient fiddle tune, also sometimes called "Little Beggarman." Many great players have covered this one, and I am not among those individuals, lol.

An all-time classic from Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. I would say that anybody who likes The Grateful Dead has a big old soft spot for this song. And it's one of those tunes that you have to put every last ounce of your emotion into, or it really falls flat. I hope I did all right. I am my own worst critic, of course. Anyway, I made it through the tune, lol. All the best, and thanks to any w...

Great old Bob Dylan tune, which is also relevant for the current times we live in. This is a great and timeless folk song, very honored to sing and play it Tim.
Nothing But A Child (Steve Earle)

A Christmas Song of sorts from the great, great songwriter Mr. Earle, always an inspiration to me since I was 15 years old. This is from his "Copperhead Road" album, one of those records that smacked me in the face and announced that this was what it was all about, man. It was romantic, twangy, hard-rocking, poetic, and bada$$, all rolled up into one. Happy holidays to anybody watching my silly...

This is, of course, an all-time classic rock ballad written by Gregg Allman. It truly is such a beautiful song and a joy for me to play and sing. I hope a few people enjoy my little version of such a seminal and incredible song Tim.
Standing on the Moon (Phil Lesh Tribute)

Rest in peace to bass master and legend and hero of mine Phil Lesh. This is a Garcia/Hunter ballad that is appropriate for the occasion, I think.

This is a great bluesy number from Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, appearing in the album "Run for the Roses," which was Garcia's last solo album unfortunately. This tune was played some by the JGB and Garcia and Kahn acoustic. I always thought it was cool and a little different. Thanks Tim.
I Shall Be Released (Bob Dylan)

This classic Dylan tune was written in 1967 and first recorded on "The Basement Tapes" with The Band. Subsequently, this song has been recorded by many, many artists and is a legitimate American classic. I am particularly fond of The Jerry Garcia Band version personally, of course. Thanks Tim.

Lovely job on this, Tim! Well done! Merry Christmas and have a great new year! - Glenn
I am so glad you enjoyed it, Glenn. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Ole girl sound just right!!!!
@AdamWillisWilkesMusic Oh, man. That guitar is a wall-hanger at this point. I played it for a friend of mine overseas who wanted to hear it. I appreciate the comment, Adam. Have a great Christmas day, and God bless you--Tim.
You guys are great 👍🏻👍🏻👍 ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
Thank you, my friend. It's hard to get my son to record something. He is so busy. Best wishes--Tim.
Tim, this a great cover. I'm glad to see you're continuing on this path of devotion and dedication. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and all the best to you and yours in this upcoming year.
Hey, Vladek. It's very good to hear from you. Thank you for the kindness, and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well. I hope everything is going well for you. Peace--Tim.
Good stuff - will check out Mapache so I can name drop them to look cool to the youngsters. 😝
They are two young guys who were in a group called Grateful Shred with bassist Dan Horne. They have since formed their own group. Great singers and songwriters, pretty good guitar players, too. I dig them. Thanks for the love, my friend--Tim.
Well sang, well played. Thank you for posting this piece.
Hey, thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate the kindness. Merry Christmas--Tim.
Fantastic jam!!! ❤❤
Thanks so much. I do a lot of stuff like this, but I never know if it's worth posting. I appreciate the feedback--Tim.
Sounds good, man! My hands get so cold in the winter I'm wearing hand warmers right now!
I actually work in a freezer, but I am old, so I get kind of arthritic. This kind of playing helps me get everything loose to play chords and runs. It has very little structure. Just an Em to D and whatever else pops up, lol. Thank you for the comment and stay warm, my friend. Merry Christmas, dude!
Oh, very nice! Hard to miss with a TVZ tune. That was very nice, nice and relaxed and down home! - Glenn
Well done, Tim! Great old flat picking piece! Great to hear! - Glenn
Thank you, Glenn. Longer comment on AGF.
Really nice version of a classic Tim. Captures the mood perfectly. There's a moment or two of what sounds like a strained vocal, but that's more of an observation than a criticism. Very few of us are great singers, and going for it shows commitment, which is ultimately more important than virtuosity IMO.
Ray, my friend, it is really good to hear from you. I appreciate you taking the time to listen to my little version of this great tune. I am getting over kind of a rough cold/flu, so that might be part of what you are hearing in that recording. I am certainly no virtuoso of any kind, whether singing or playing, just a guy who likes to play a few tunes as a hobby. I would only hope my efforts sound heartfelt (which they are) and not too unpleasant a listening experience (and there's the rub, lol). Anyway, I hope you and your family have a great holiday season. And shoot me a message any time. It is always a pleasure--Tim.
Sounds great
Well, thank you so much, friend. Happy holidays--Tim.
Well done, Tim! Sounds great! - Glenn
It is definitely one of my favorite tunes. Thank you, Glenn.
Great job on this great old song! This is one of those songs I used to play when I was just learning to play when I was about 16 years old. Man, you do a great relaxed job on this! Well done! - Glenn
Thank you so much, Glenn. It is a favorite of mine as well--Tim.
They most certainly are! Nice tune, and your Alvarez sounds great, bro!

You are a pleasure to listen too great guitar thanks for sharing
@allanyork244 Thank you for the incredibly kind words of encouragement. This is what keeps me hitting the record button. Many good vibes--Tim, NC.

Greetings from the UK Bravo my musical friend peace and love to you and yours
Thank you so much. It does mean a lot--Tim.
A fitting tribute to Phil Lesh, Tim. Very nice job on this. - Glenn
Thank you, Glenn. It took me a while to play and sing this without getting too emotional. It reminds me of Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, and they were major musical heroes of mine--Tim.
You got me right in the feels! 😭Your voice sounds beautiful, bro! I've been feeling so melancholy knowing another one of my heroes has gone. Gonna go have a cry now for reals!
Thank you, my friend. It took me a week to be able to do this without crying. Peace and best wishes--Tim.
Beautiful slow and easy reading of this tune, Tim. Your strumming and singing are just right on...
Ray, I appreciate the comment and am glad that you dug that take on it. Best wishes--Tim.
I'd forgotten this tune, to the point that I didn't even recognize the title when saw it. Apologies if I'm late to this (or anything else I haven't stumbled onto yet) - I was away for a few days and then came back with a nice little dose of Covid (courtesy of my six month old granddaughter - the stuff the little ones bring home from daycare these days!). Anyway, this is a nice old classic blues, nice to hear something so basic from Jerry. I might have to try this one.
This is a fairly obscure Garcia-Hunter tune, so it's easy to forget about the song. It's a cool one, though, and I love the bridge. You don't hear Jerry doing straight-up blues too much, but he was great at it. I hope you do add this one to your songbook, and I hope you feel better. And I appreciate your interest in my videos. It's always a pleasure to chat with you--Tim.
Great job on this Tim. Just right for a Saturday night in the rain. - Glenn
Hey, Glenn. Thanks so much. I am glad this tune fit the mood.--Tim.
It's an underrated tune -- Nice work!
I think it's a great tune as well, a lot of fun to play and mess up, lol. Thanks for checking it out, my friend--Tim.
Great vocals! Sounds great! ✌❤❄
Thank you, my friend. I appreciate the support--Tim.
That was really well done, Tim! Nice to hear that great old song again! Well done both vocally and on the guitar. - Glenn
Thanks so much, Glenn. It's such a favorite of mine, and I am glad you thought it turned out okay--Tim.
Great playing, def time to start a band!
Yes, eventually he is going to be in a band. I am trying to prepare him for those experiences, lol. Thanks for checking it out, W. Peace--Tim.
wonderful!!!
Thank you very much. It is such an epic tune and influenced me so profoundly. Best wishes--Tim in NC.
Really pretty version of a beautiful song Tim. You really strum this very differently than a lot of stuff you do, adapting to the mellower feel of the song. Well sung too. This was the last song I ever heard Jerry sing live, the encore of my last show at RFK not long before he died. And I sort of wanted to play and sing this at my Mom's memorial service, but that was at a time I wasn't playing much at all, and I was a worst than terrible singer, so I just hummed it quietly to myself.
Ray, I appreciate the kindness. I attempt to play for the song, so if it's a softer tune, I try to strum and pick a little less aggressively. Sometimes it works, and other times not so much. That RFK show was my last one as well. I can only remember Jerry seeming really out of it. That's a beautiful sentiment you memorializing your mom with Brokedown. I think it's a very spiritual song myself--Tim.
@@timtsh I saw both of those RFK shows in 95 and my memory was Jerry looked and sounded terrible the first night - out of it is about the nicest thing you could say about him - he seemed like he was nearly nodding out on stage. But the second night, when they did Brokedown for the encore, he seemed MUCH more together to me. Dylan opened and Jerry came out and played a couple of tunes with him. And Hornsby played with them all show and he always seemed to inspire Jerry. He seemed pretty on relative to a lot of the shows those last couple of years. Anyway, cool to know we were at the same show, almost 30 years after the fact…
Yes, I do recall Jerry being seriously off that first night, and the second night was better. That all seems like a lifetime ago. I can't say I miss those massive crowds and all the idiots just looking to get wasted. My favorite memories of those last few years were the JGB shows I got to see. It is very cool that we both had the same last show. I had kind of lost touch with the Dead's music a bit until I started recording all these tunes for Jack. I have been way more into bluegrass and folk and woodshedding that style of guitar. For most of my playing life, I was pretty much a strummer and could sing a few tunes. Anyway, I am rambling. Thanks for the great conversation, Ray!
С удовольствием послушал. Привет из России. ❤
Thank you for listening and commenting. Best wishes--Tim.
Very nicely done, Tim. You sure make that Yamaha sound good! Hope all is well. - Glenn
Thank you, my friend. That Yamaha just sounds good, lol. We are okay down here. Best wishes--Tim.
This is great Tim. The song seems made for your style. And your flat picking is always right in the pocket of this tune. Really well done. I have a Norman Blake story for you. In the summer of 82, I was living in Telluride, waiting tables in a restaurant that was part of the New Sheridan Hotel, the main hotel in town in those days. Norman and his band was one of the main attractions of that summer's bluegrass festival. I saw them play, was working the next day, and he and his band were hanging out in the lobby of the hotel, with instruments, jamming the day away. Turns out their old tour bus had broken down and they were stuck in town for a few days until the local mechanic could get a part in. They were staying in the hotel and held court in the lobby for those few days, and needless to say, I hung out there during every break I got and when I wasn't working.. He and his wife and band were really nice folks. And obviously, insanely great players...
Ray, thanks for the wonderful comment, man. This is a tune that helped me develop the way that I approach playing guitar (for better or worse, lol). When I got semi-serious about playing guitar, I picked up a Norman Blake instruction video and studied that thing religiously. I got to see Norman only a couple times over the years, and he's been retired from the road for a long time now. I love that story, and I appreciate you sharing it. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall there, my friend. Did you know that Norman was able to basically retire from his deal for the soundtrack to the film "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou"? Norman agreed to take a percentage of the soundtrack's sales, and he gambled well. And Norman's inclusion on the soundtrack was adamantly insisted by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, as producer T. Bone Burnett was not too sure of Mr. Blake. I always thought this was a pretty cool story--Tim.
Отлично друг, на душе теплее становится от вашей музыки! ❤
Thank you for the kind words--Tim.

We absolutely appreciate your kind words and thumbs up. Thank you--Tim and Jack.
Really nice! And some VERY tasty lead playing by Jack on that strat!
Ray, we appreciate the kindness. Jack was pretty excited to get a crack at this tune. He developing really quickly on guitar. It is amazing to witness--Tim.
Wow, that was nice, Tim! Great to see you and Jack together! Also, it's cool to see how well Jack is developing on the electric guitar! Nothing better than making music within your own family! Good for you, Tim! And very nice solo, Jack! Well done! - Glenn
Glenn, you are the best, my friend. This was a tune I had been wanting to record, as it's sort of an American songbook kind of thing, and Jerry Garcia played this quite a bit. Jack was more than happy to add some lead to it, which freed me up to simply play rhythm and sing. Jack had never played this tune before today, lol--Tim.
Nice work guys. Duet sounds sweet! Nice colorful leads Jack! Well done. ✌❤❄
Thank you, my friend. My son is 15 and has been playing a little over two years. He plays lots of instruments and is already an excellent musician overall. I couldn't be more proud of him--Tim.
@@timtsh Awesome! I've been trying to get my three boys to play for years. They all showed an interest, early on, but none of them stuck with it. They dabble now and again. Teaching my nephew now. He's just learning to switch chords effectively. Kids are busy nowadays. Tough to get them to put the required time in. My son just took his guitar out today for a bit.🤞 ✌❤❄
Man, you just never know. I bought Jack a Yamaha FG800 as a starter guitar when he was 12-13, and he played it some. He wanted an electric, so I got him a Tele. He liked that pretty well. But he exploded when I got him a Strat. Now he is technically way better than I am (which isn't saying much, TBH), and he also has a Yamaha ACR1, which is a sweet acoustic-electric. And he got a Boss Katana MKIII for his birthday. I mean, it's good if kids take an interest at all. I am lucky that my son got obsessed with it like I have always been--TIm.
Another great one Tim. Another one I play sometimes as well, although this kind of bluegrass stuff isn't really in my wheelhouse. I love the way you play and sing it. I think I tend to like your lead playing most when it's integrated in with the strumming more so than when it takes off on its own - plenty of examples of both here. Maybe it's just because I like playing lead to an underlying rhythm and never got anywhere with being able to just play a lead section in the middle of a tune without a rhythm to anchor it to.
Hey, Ray. Thank you for checking it out. I really love to play this song, as you can probably tell. As far as my lead playing, it is fairly instinctual and just following my muse. Sometimes it's okay, and sometimes it's a bit of a train wreck, lol. But I have worked pretty hard to make the leads somewhat digestible. At my core, though, I am a singer and rhythm player, and if I play with a good lead player, I tend to lay back. Best wishes, as always, my friend--Tim.
@@timtsh Hey, just to let you know. I'm ramping back on my AGF time, so if I miss you there, I'll try to keep up with you here. Something about hitting 5000 posts and realizing I've been repeating myself there a lot. Too damn old to waste time saying stuff I've already said any number of times! Not sure I have much more to say about acoustic guitars, so I'm gonna be a lot less active there. But I'll always be into the music and your stuff tends to pop up for me here, so I'll be checking it out and commenting on occasion...
I am not all that active at AGF, so you can find me a lot more on RUclips. I have a few friends there, but it's mostly a bunch of people playing fingerstyle on very expensive boutique guitars, lol. I probably will not share this one at AGF. Ray, feel free to comment on anything I have posted. I love your input. My personal email is also attached, and I love talking music, so hit me up anytime, my friend--Tim.
