Underappreciated 90s TV: The Alien Edition
So much great science fiction was created in the 1990s that it deserved a "Underappreciated 90s" video of it's very own. In fact, it deserves two, since we will be dividing the Sci Fi edition into Alien Edition and Future Tech Edition.

#TheBookisBetter - The Hunger Games
Просмотров 49028 дней назад
Well, this has been a long time coming, but as tends to happen with a new show things tend to get re-written a lot! Since this is a new project, I'd love feedback around things I should change for the next #TheBookisBetter, so feel free to leave a comment or find me on Twitter! This video is aimed at people with at least passing familiarity of book and/or movie. If you haven't read The Hunger G...
Del Toro's Pinocchio and the Art of Stop Motion
Просмотров 143Месяц назад
Journey with me from the first flip book, the rise of the monster movie and all the way to the artistic masterpiece that is Del Tor's vision of the story, "Pinocchio." Even if the story isn't your favorite, childhood tale, the time, effort and skill that went into making this is truly to be honored. And, if you make it it to the end, we have announcements of things to come!! Happy Headbutting! ...
A Tribute to my Nana: Exploring Her Three Favorite Comedies
Просмотров 1062 месяца назад
My Nana was a force of nature. She wished a thing and the world moved to make her wish come true. She spoke, and the heavens bowed to her will. I exaggerate, but she was an impressive woman. This is why I have always loved that fact that so stern a figure LOVED comedies. And not just any comedies, but many of the ones you'd never have expected. The improper. The vulgar. The British. I have rewa...
Lexx: An Underappreciated 90s TV Addendum

Underappreciated 90's TV
Просмотров 1362 месяца назад
While the 90’s was a time of great TV shows, this means that some didn’t rise to the top and have been forgotten over time. Here are a few of those that I think would probably do better in the modern day. Note: The show Lexx was also supposed to be included in this line up. However, that show is so damned weird, that the “summary” became almost as long as the rest of this video put together. It...
Chinatown: A Discussion of Noir Film
Просмотров 1214 месяца назад
One of the greatest movies ever made, Chinatown was made move than a decade after the classic noir period. However, while many neo-noir movies have traces of these old classics, Chinatown may be the closest adaptation of the genre created after 1960. The movie has resulted in numerous culture references in other media, influenced other movies and has definitively made it's mark on history. Too ...
Love Lies Bleeding - It's mostly just weird

My first attempt at a (mostly) spoiler free review. This movie got very little attention, I suspect because the trailer was so misleading. I was intrigued enough - or crazy enough - to watch it though, so here are my thoughts.
Lexx is... ok in my book. Probably had seen a few episodes, but was more of a Farscape fan in that period of Sci-Fi Channel programming. Hell, I was also more of a Sliders fan, but that's a bit complicated.
@@kristinrathbun1408 Both of those were definitely more popular shows. I wanted to touch on shows people might have missed during that stretch and I was surprised at how many people don’t know Lex ever existed!
Excellent video, Goat
@@TheGourdKing Thank you! The important question though, is whether you admired my Clancy Brown shots 😉
@@TheEclecticGoat I mean, who wouldn't?
@TheGourdKing That is the correct answer 😂
Whatever that clicking sound is in the background that starts about halfway thru the video was super distracting. Had to stop watching the video because it made me think something in my kitchen was about to blow up.
@@ericb7799 I’m sorry to hear that. Nothing comes through on my end so I don’t know what it could be 🤔
Nicely done. What a shame so many of them are so hard to find!
@@CindyTibbetts These are easier to find than my last 90s series, though not necessarily in hard copy. Many are available on Tubi or YT for free viewing!
Proof we needed more Tim Curry 😂
The world is a sadder, less weird place with Tim Curry
Above & Beyond really did get a raw deal, with a great cast (love that R. Lee Ermey got a cameo)... but holy f_ck that budget. Fox really did kill a lot of shows with meddling, like Millennium.
@@farvithianguard Yeah, lots of things we think of as modern issues in media really aren’t new when you look at 90s TV!
@@TheEclecticGoat Yeah... unfortunately, just worse.
Speaking of a series that has problems with availability (Earth TFC), OMFG In the Heat of the Night is so difficult to get due to distribution/ownership issues. Seasons 5-6 in particular don't seem to exist anywhere in physical media.
@@farvithianguard I’ve heard! Also a lot of the shows I covered in my first under appreciated 90s seemed very difficult to find on physical media
@@TheEclecticGoat Distribution rights for some shows seemed to be almost as insane as ownership rights.
Earth the Final Conflict had some interesting similarities to V (the original series).
Great work as always Goatywoo!
@@Smylexxia Thank you Master Otter!
This essentially was my childhood, so many classics and so many memories. Certainly instilled my love of science and more. Thank you for pulling this together.
@@TheRealTombliboos I’m so glad you liked it! It took awhile to get it together but the rewatches and memories were so worth it ❤️
Really Well dome editing and pacing! Great Production all around!!
@@ProblematicWhiteGuy_Jon Thanks very much. I need a better editing program and to get faster though. Practice! 😄
also ? X-files !!!!!!
True, but Star Trek and X Files weren’t under appreciated 😂
best captains picard tho >-<
wich startreks was your fav ? mine was ds9 <3
I could never get into DS9 because I was too irritated about the B5 clash. I mean to go back and binge it sometime soon but the Roddenberry classics will always be my favs
Great script and editing. Love your videos.
Thank you very much! I’m definitely better at the scripting than the visuals, but I’m working on it!
90s TV has a lot of underappreciated Alien related TV. My Favourite is probably Roswell Conspiracy - the Animated Show
@@SmuTheDJ I had not heard of that one! Most of my 90s sci fi intros were through my uncle as a kid, and he definitely had a “type.” 😂 I suspect there will be more of these to come - definitely the Tech one I promised!
😎 First
You are first in ALL our hearts Melvin. Even when you're fifth on the comments. :-D
book alwasbetters ? if u hac´ve good creative minds that is <es yes ^-^
Was this meant for the #TheBookisBetter video? Sorry I wasn’t sure from your comment.
@@TheEclecticGoat boboboi was make a general statement here ? 9out of 10 books is better than movie simple as that and i know u agree yes yes ^-^
hmmm mad gods was nice yes ?
Not my cup of tea I’m afraid. I tries watching it for this and first, it isn’t really stop motion, IMO. More a mix. And I found it made me irrationally angry for no reason 😂
@@TheEclecticGoat i see ^-^and i get what u say it is not actual stop motions it steals its vibe yes ... ^-^
1st bookme read ? brothers grimms tales family owned bound tome ,yes yes me can read germans me not germans
diney steals and suxx buuts -.-'
@@theFirstDemonLilith What I find the most frustrating is how much money Disney has made off public domain stories, and then denied other people the right to do the same.
i love stop motions ? is so creepy and nostalgic ^-^
It definitely can be creepy. I didn’t find Pinocchio or Kubo creepy though - except where they were supposed to be. I think the use of computers to smooth out the jerkiness has eased the creep factor some
@@TheEclecticGoat wellthe movementsis so ...lackof word ? creepy XDXDDX but i really like it me see as kid yes yes ^-^
where me sinbad cyclops ? 🤣
@@theFirstDemonLilith I didn’t want to showcase TOO much of Harryhausen’s stuff specifically because I was considering doing a video just on him at some point in the future.
To make someone ill, under-fed, long hunger, I thought the movies knew how to convey this long before this movie was made. It’s called make up. Then make them look a little better because the Capitols care for the tributes, then make them look worse as The Hunger-Games goes on. Plus something else that is conveyed poorly is how long this kids are in the arena. Have Peeta ask Katness, have Ceaser say that they are coming up on day whatever, have a cute little Day 1 pop up on the screen just before the horn goes off then add it here and there just so the people who haven’t read the book knows how many days the Huger Games have gone on. And then there’s the end when they get pulled into the hover craft Peeta gets taken off for treatment and looks like he might die, switch to the room Katness gets held in and dolled up again. Before Katness finds out horribly that Peeta had lost his leg right on stage. They could have done more of the book with more clipped scenes, throughout, trying to tell more than they did. Instead of adding stupid stuff that wasn’t even in the book, aka the original script to begin with.
@@horseygirl6232 Yes! They condensed the time a lot for no reason I’ve ever been able to figure out. And makeup can do wonders. Excellent comment!
I actually loved Jason and the Argonauts (and a lot of Harryhausens work). I honestly need to go look into Coraline and the Del Toro Pinocchio.
@@farvithianguard Coraline is amazing. Pinocchio is… odd. He changed the story a bunch and while the artisty is undeniable there is a bit of “who was this made for?”
@@TheEclecticGoat From what I saw, yes... but then again I do sometimes enjoy reflection on the dangers of the cult-like behavior of that period, sooo....
I feel the need to comment here purely for your algorithm benefit, lol. I never actually read the books, as the premise was wholly uninteresting to me. When I saw the trailers or bits of the films... I was somehow even less interested. Yet at the same time... yeah, I can still see some of your issues with the alterations made if you're a fan of the writing.
@@farvithianguard I wouldn’t necessarily suggest the series, but I would suggest the first book to anyone who writes simply because looking at different way of writing is great and hers is VERY different
@@TheEclecticGoat Interesting... I wonder.
Stop motion is rather a lost art form. I still remember that the ED-209 from Robocop was a stop-motion beast, as well.
@@farvithianguard I laughed when I found out about the squishing issue
The actress who played Clove auditioned for Katniss, and I think she would have been perfect. She was 15, and looked a little more like I pictured the character while reading the book.
@@louisacoote2337 I did not know that! That’s really interesting and now I’d love to have seen that version of the movie
the smartest goat on the internet...well, definitely top five at the very least.
Now I feel like I need to make a top 10 short of goats smarter than me. 🤣
I really hated the ending. The ending of the last book, that is. Killed the whole thing for me.
@@Melvin-Deeply Yeah, I always felt like her editor pulled her aside and said “no, you can’t end it that way. You have to make it happy. Write an epilogue.” It feels so forced and out of place
Let the games begin! *dies immediately*
@@TheGourdKing Well, you are a food source in an event called The Hunger Games…
@@TheEclecticGoat The exploited my one weakness!
@TheGourdKing I mean, theoretically the only reason it’s a greater weakness for you than me is you’re easier to eat raw 🤣
Very good.. and Huckleberry Hound that has been a while!
Oh I don't remember that Huckleberry Hound was stop motion! I'll have to go watch some old re-runs 😀
Very interesting and well made, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Concise yet very thorough - Really enjoyed this. Check out Phil Tippet's Mad Gods if you havent already - a love letter to stop motion.
To each their own. I tried really hard to get through it while researching this 🤣 It made me irrationally angry
Amazing video, but I'll never trust puppets. They're sneaky
Yeah, marionettes, especially, seem to really have that “uncanny valley” effect on some people. I have a photo of a window of hand carved puppets in Peru and people DO NOT like it 🤣
@@TheEclecticGoat muppets, however, remain awesome.
@@Smylexxia And the early day muppets remain the awesome-est!
Al Gorithm won't know what hit 'em!
🤣🤣 I don’t think Al much cares about stop motion. Box offices certainly don’t!
🖐😎
Very nice! It made me remember my grandfather, a good painful memory.
There is a song line I think of sometimes. "In your dreams, your grandparents live forever."
Came from @Tombi 's Creator stream...stayed for the content & voice
Thank you very much! Working on a proper studio and mic set up so hopefully the sound will improve soon too!
Thank you very much for the Video, looking forward to the next one!
Thank you! Hope to have at least one major video done by the end of the month and maybe a small one if I get ambitious 😄
Tootsie is such a well-written film. I remember watching it with my family, and then watching it later as an adult I really appreciate the performances and the writing so much.
Tootsie managed to do moralism with humor while today they do it with a hammer. I can definitely appreciate the tact Hollywood had then!
I absolutely love this. Great theme, great tone, and absolute authenticity. And you're right about American humor. Great work, Goat!
@@atom_gray Thank you! Glad you got time to give it a listen and I hope to be able to do more!
Hah, also a nice little note to Jamie Lee Curtis going bonkers, too.
This was a fantastic idea for a tribute. Thank you for sharing it... with my grandparents and my mother gone, this really does give me an idea to think about... not sure if I could manage it, though.
Gonna be honest, I might have gotten a LITTLE teary….🥹
@@TheEclecticGoat If I manage the tribute for my mother I'm thinking about... yeah, I absolutely understand.
The critique realm needs more of this. 👍🏻
@@atom_gray absolutely! Less “boomer” and more remembering our elders with respect ❤️
Excellent tribute to someone important to you and your Nana had excellent taste in comedy.
I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I suspect not everyone will remember them all, but it certainly is a blast from the past!
I liked Heaven Can Wait. It was a remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan, from 1941. I enjoyed that too.
Yeah the history of the remakes, sequels, movies-with-the-same-name gets super confusing 😆
🖐😎
The 90s was a wild time for TV. I remember Aeon Flux the first time I ever saw it. I was like what the hell is this?
@@CannoliSasquatch lol - then it succeeded!
Thank you SO MUCH for bringing up Millennium...! I loved that show, own the whole series on DVD (which is awful to get, now). Lance Henriksen is underrated in this show, in my opinion. I really enjoyed it, weird twists, turns and all.
@@farvithianguard Yeah, Millennium and The Pretender were the two shows that really inspired me to do this video
@@TheEclecticGoat I do agree with Lance about the later seasons. While I did still enjoy them, they really went in an entirely different direction. Apart from Lucy (the one who killed Detective Blecher), the supernatural had been very ambiguous and the Group very defined.
