Making a pair of walnut bowls
How do I make matching bowls on the lathe? Measure. Whatever the smallest bowl is becomes your standard for the set. Start by cutting the blanks to the same size, that's an easy way to start. Find your critical measurements, for me the bottom decorations and the overall diameter were critical. Keep the first bowl you make close by as a reference. Once you've done this a few times you will naturally cut similar shapes. The finish on these bowls is walnut oil, shellac, and beeswax

miniature snowman earrings - skew practice
Просмотров 181Месяц назад
It's skew practice time for miniature work. This is a fun little project for wood turning. I don't show adding the hardware, this is just the turning. This is one of those seasonal Christmas turnings that could make a great gift!
Do you want to build a snowman?
Просмотров 612 месяца назад
This snowman won't melt (hahaha). I've never turned any single piece of wood that big before. It was a more difficult turning only because I decided I just had to use my skew chisel instead of a spindle gouge. Hopefully this is an idea you can use at your next artisan market! Take safety into your own hands! Don't do what I do if it's not safe for you!
A miniature rolling pin?!

Miniature things are so cute. I've only made a few of these but my girls especially like them and tend to get creative with them. This is a great skew chisel practice. I should have used the toe of the skew more than I did, but maybe that's for next time. Maybe what I should have done is replace the rolling pin in our kitchen with this one just to see what my wife says... Hmmm...
Spatula for Breakfast

I needed a spatula to make breakfast so I made one out of Accoya (pickled pine wood). It's very stable, stable enough that I could throw it in the dishwasher no problem. This is how I make a spatula, it's a fun and easy project that lets you make food after, because you need to test it for science and all. The spatula, although thin and light, is surprisingly strong and easy on your cookware - ...

I saw someone on RUclips make a dry vase in 10 minutes that they would sell it for $10. I thought that making a dry vase in that amount of time looked easy, and thought I'd have no problem replicating that kind of time, but I was wrong. it took me several attempts to get my process down and to come up with a design that I liked. let's see if I can get this done in 5 minutes
How to make a Scottish Spurtle with the skew
Просмотров 4817 месяцев назад
A spurtle (spər-tᵊl) is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool that dates back to the 15th century. It’s primarily used for stirring porridge, soups, stews, and broths. Shape and Purpose: The spurtle has a rod-like shape, which allows for efficient stirring without congealing or forming lumps in porridge. Unlike a spoon, which might drag during stirring, the low surface area of a spurtle reduces the ch...

The biggest end grain bowl I've ever made!
Просмотров 1858 месяцев назад
I don't make a lot of end grain bowls but this one is special. it's over 12" in diameter, white oak, solid, and took quite a while to make because end grain bowls need to be made differently. the main thing to keep in mind is you want to cut into side grain, not into end grain whenever possible. now you know the secret to cutting end grain bowls!

    It's neither of the finishes that is coloring the wood yellow. Although linseed oil might yellow over time, that's not the effect you're seeing. What you are seeing is the effect of the oil "wetting" the wood, changing the way it reflects light, giving it a yellow tint. All woods will darken over time, finished or not.

    • @blackcoalwoodworking
      @blackcoalwoodworking 3 месяца назад

      The Linseed oil wood has yellowed for sure over time

    • @RafaelHe
      @RafaelHe 3 месяца назад

      @@blackcoalwoodworking linseed oil was the oil base of the oil paints used in European paintings for centuries. Properly refined, it's not supposed to yellow, bright colored paintings in museums attest to that. look up Steve Voigt's blog on linseed oil refining for wood finishes. Hardware store BLO is junk, making your own refined linseed oil is an interesting pursuit, I'm trying it. I've not used long enough to make claims, but it's an interesting subject if one wants to make his own finishes.

      I'm not sure the color comes from the oil or wax. Take a dry piece of sanded wood, and pour water over it, the color will come out just the same as oiling and waxing it will.

    Clean looking vase! How do you handle including the pith, some slow dry process? Everything I've turned so far that included the pith has split (some within days, some months). Also not trying to judge but could be worth doing some googling on using gloves and lathes. Fingerless could be a good option or if you're just trying to stay clean/warm then nitrile or something that would just tear instead of pulling you into the machine would keep your hands safer!

    • @blackcoalwoodworking
      @blackcoalwoodworking 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks! The wood has been drying for years and would have cracked by now if it was going to. I also still my hole right through the pitch so I think that helps somewhat. The gloves thing, it's winter when the video was filmed. I've got some tighter gloves now but our winter temps hit -40 C/F but probably average out at -10C this year. Having gloves with fingers poking out is asking for frostbite in minutes here. Safety is everyone's responsibility for sure and I appreciate your concern

I will be looking for your update the longevity of the smell and the durability of the bowl. Did you buy the wood online? Any side of effects of working with it, e.g., staining of the lathe, etc?

    • @blackcoalwoodworking
      @blackcoalwoodworking 11 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Yeah, respirator is my preferred safety device. The only side effect was the smell. Even a day later the shavings on the ground kept the smell in the air. Other than that it was similar to turning pine, no staining or anything, it did seem to cut a little harder but otherwise it's just like pine. I sourced it from my workplace.
