Korean Stick Showdown - Crown vs. Taeyoung vs. Myoungshin Review
Просмотров 27 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, I will go over the differences and the plus and minuses of 3 of the most popular Korean style fightstick levers. Featuring the Crown 307FJ, Taeyoung Fanta, and the Myoungshin Fanta.
Hori Myoungshin Fanta conversion part4

Putting on the finishing touches. Troubleshooting a slight incompatibility with the mounting plate. This requires cutting an extra plastic part off the Myoungshin Fanta stick. Afterwards, finish off the mod by mounting the new stick to the case, attaching the wires to the proper directions, and reassembling the stick and actuator.
Hori Myoungshin Fanta conversion part3

After drilling the hole, this part covers modding the Myoungshin Fanta stick itself so that we can mount it to our sanwa compatible mounting holes. This includes taking out the stock fanta mounting plate, and replacing it with the Kowal mounting plate.

Installing a Myoungshin Fanta korean style stick into a Hori RAP4 Japanese style mount. While the Hori RAP4 stick was used, this mod can work for most sticks that have enough room to fit the kowal mounting plate and fanta stick. Best way to tell if you can do this with your stick is to open it up and see how much room you have. Part 1 of this video covers details about the parts and what is nee...
SF6, KOF XV Taeyoung-Myoungshin-Sanwa?Which one?
He might not answer, but from my own personal experience, I do not like Korean levers for games not Tekken, and I can give you a very good reason. The tension on K-levers is much greater, so when you do quarter circle movements, or half circles or 3/4 circles, etc., it becomes much more difficult. The reason is that the tension changes at the cardinal and diagonals, with tension increasing the more pressure you apply. With the Japanese spring levers, you get a consistent, lighter tension all the way through. This means that circular movements are much easier. You'll be more consistent. That being said, I use Seimitsu for a lot of those games or I use a modded Sanwa. Either way, however, you should be fine, whether you use Sanwa or Seimitsu. If you are playing Tekken, however, then you will want to try a Fanta or Crown lever. These will make your back-dash cancels much easier. It will also help with Mishima characters or anything that requires neutral inputs. I hope this helps. (BTW: You can use a Korean lever if you want for those games because it's not as if they won't work, but you might run into those issues I mentioned.)
I would like to add that his video was made six years ago. Since then, the Myoungshin Fanta lever has been changed, with better quality control. I cannot remark on how it compares to the Taeyoung Fanta, but I can compare it to the 309MJ NHM. Many said that the Myoungshin Fanta is much stiffer than the NHM, but recently, it seems that the tension is different and the Myoungshin has much less tension that NHM. So it might not be the case that it will be stiffer now than the Taeyoung Fanta.
Which one is the best?I am a street fighters player.
At this point, leverless (hitbox). lol.
I hate taeyoung lever.. myoungshin and crown is much better
Why are you doing a half circle for deathfist?
Because I'm a scrub. lol
@@jacsmi hahaha
@@jacsmi didn't expect this reply!!! Thought there was some hidden trick behind it that I was missing!
Thank God! I found a video that proves crown can be fitted in qanba drone. This is very helpful, I hope we can see how did you fit the crown lever at the drone. Thank you.
Yes, it's a tight squeeze, but it is definitely possible.
@@jacsmi have you a video on putting it on the drone? Sir?
@@nitrohunter550 Unfortunately I didn't make a video for that one. Sorry.
@@jacsmi it's okay confirming that it fits will do.
@@nitrohunter550 Yep, it fits, but you have to bend some of the pins to squeeze it in.
Did you drill the Razer Panthera before installing the Taeyoung Fanta? Hope u can answer my question 😁
Yes, you have to drill the Panthera otherwise it won't fit. If you don't want to do this, I would suggest getting a Crown stick with a JLF mount.
Im doing this for my RAP V this weekend, but putting in a Teyoung fanta. Wish me luck :D
Bro your voice is proper soothing no homo!
Is easyer hit diagonals with korean stick?
I think harder than sanwa style sticks.
My only complain about the Myoungshin is it tends to cancel everything too quickly so I often get hit by rather easily steppable moves as it cancelled my SS
Why not just buy a custom panel from Jasen's?
the crown is just as good no need to drill holes
It's all up to user preference. I can tell you the crown, myoungshin, and taeyoung sticks all feel very different, and I'm only a casual player. You can check out this video for the differences. ruclips.net/video/O3xzl-l51ng/видео.html
I certainly felt the need to drill holes though :)
@@jacsmi How hard was it to drill through a sheet of metal like that? I wanna try it myself, but those step bits are expensive and can go for 30$+ And considering I'd use it for this, and probably this only I'm not sure if it's worth.
@@Puli_Rula It is a little tough and does take some time to do if you don't have a drill press. It might be worth it for you to find a local machine shop that could drill the hole for you for a smaller cost... maybe?
Did you remove the plexi cover of razer panthera before drilling it?
I didn't, but if you were planning to replace the art, then maybe drill the hole as well when you have the plexi cover off.
@@jacsmi I see, good thing is the glass didn't break while drilling it. I'm just thinking if did you open the cover first and drilled it on the back? (to avoid breaking the plexi)
need help finding the perfect stick for my fight stick. according to Qanba website, only the CROWN will fit my QANBA DRAGON fight stick. do you know if this is true, or will any of these Korean style sticks fit? ...i spent so much money on my Qanba Dragon stick, so i want the BEST and whatever makes it easier to pull off the moves like Jins dragon punch motion-like moves , and pauls phonix smasher fireball motion-like move which all require a delay that i cannot do with the stock Sanwa. :(
Well, only the CROWN will fit by default. If you want the Myoungshin or Taeyoung you have to drill a larger hole and do some mods.
@@jacsmi does this also apply to SUZOHAPP joystick and buttons? :(
@@kjmullinz I didn't try it with the happ controllers... potentially it could work, but you'll need plenty of room inside the joystick casing... that's gonna be the limiting factor.
@@jacsmi if qanba dragon doesn't have enough room, what brand and model fight stick has enough room for happ parts then? :(
@@kjmullinz A custom case that you make out of wood yourself 😉, with all the holes that you need. And using a Brooks universal fight board.
Joseph Do I'm soon to be purchasing a Etokki Omni Korean, it comes stock with a Taeyoung Fanta, I can purchase a Myoungshin Fanta with my order. The question is, are these two sticks the same, except that the Myoungshin has a stiffer grommet? If that's the case I would only need to purchase a stiffer grommet for the Taeyoung right? Unless the Myoungshin is more accurate or is different like having a short throw or some other different aspect to take into consideration.
The are relatively the same other than the grommet stiffness. There are slight differences like the size of the battop is slightly different. And the finish of the Myoungshin is shiny vs the Taeyoung being matted. And other slight differences like that.
Also I think the shape of the grommet is slightly different... which gives you different throw and resistance
@@jacsmi is the myongshin grommet stiffness compared to 35g stiffness of 309mj grommet ?
Taeyoung -> 태영 -> "Teh Yung"
did you drill your panthera too?
What kind if switches do you recommend for the 307FJ ? I noticed that I can't hit diagonals with it, I was told to get omron switches since the panasonic switches in it are not wide enough for it.
I’m gonna try this on mayflash
did it work?
Do you think that taeyoung would fit on rap hayabusa
Sorry for the late reply, I've been super busy as of late. The Taeyoung and Myoungshin are pretty much the same size. I have the Myoungshin in my Hori RAP4, but if you have another version of the RAP, it might not fit since some versions have a little indentation on the bottom in the middle. I would recommend you look at the measurements of the Taeyoung online and open your stick up to measure and see if it will fit in theory.
Joseph Do ahhh I see.... btw if let's say I'm using a collared crown lever like the Crown 309helpme... Do i need to do any mod on my arcade stick
The crown 307fj feels too tight for me and I can't seem to hit the directions properly on it is it possible to fix this with a low tension grommet? I own the crown help me, it feels just right for me, if I can make the 307 feel like the help me that would be great.
I don't have any experience with that, but if you feel the tension is too tight, try a lower tension grommet. You can find a set of grommets with different tensions and try them out, and use the one that feels the best. I've seen a set of grommets somewhere before, but I don't remember exactly which site.
I don't have a Qanba Drone, but I do have a Qanba Carbon and I'm hoping to put in a Myoungshin Fanta. Does anyone know if it would fit?
deathfist does not need neutral positioning. That's only for EWGF. But on topic. I ordered me the Crown CWL-309ML today. I wonder how that one compared to the fanta sticks and the 307. In a week or so I'll be smarter.
This is why I went with a crown stick. It's not much different and there's 2 versions that can be mounted natively in japanese sticks. This seems like such a bother lol. I'd rather just buy an etokki.
I have a crown 307fj and qanba drone, how did you manage to fit it in? It seems too big when I lay it on top to mount it.
It's a tight fit and you might have to bend some of the pins, but it will fit. The Drone is a pain to mod though because the stick part is mounted to the bottom, not the top like most other good fightsticks. imgur.com/ViEkAZ6
Joseph Do how did you manage to get the clip back on the bottom since the stick is mounted on the bottom? And then how do you get the bat top through the top plate of the drone when the bat doesnt come off? Did you put it through after the top was on and somehow get the clip on in that little hole on the bottom?
I got the clip on through the hole in the bottom. Basically i just carefully place the clip in the right spot, and used a needle nose plier to click it lock. Sorry for the late response as I've been busy as of late.
Very informative noice vid~ Currently own a Razer Panthera though haven't gotten to changing the gate, nor buttons
The buttons of the Panthera are already Sanwa... you can't get much better than those ;P (unless you prefer other colors).
All Korean joysticks work for all fighting games, not just Tekken. And by the way, a crown Korean joystick is superior because it does not rely on a spring in order to spring back into neutral. It relies on a rubber grommet/rubber silicone in order to spring back into neutral in a split second. And speaking of springs, springs suck because they break easily.
Yes, I used Tekken as my example, but it works for other fighting games and non fighting games too, like classic beat them ups, or arcade games on mame. Also, some Crown Korean sticks do use a spring and rubber grommet combination - depends on the model, like the one I have. But the Taeyoung and Myoungshin sticks are purely rubber.
Joseph Do So, the Crown 307FJ only relies on spring?
Crown 307FJ relies on BOTH a spring and a rubber grommet, the Myoungshin and Taeyoung only relies on the rubber grommet. You can see a teardown of Crown and Myoungshin here, the Taeyoung is pretty much almost the same as the Myoungshin internally. There may be other models of Crown that relies on only the rubber grommet, but I don't have those. About 2:50 minute mark on the video you can see the teardown: ruclips.net/video/FvGQH7zQYRc/видео.html
i have the old taeyoung from like 17-18 years ago , those have a hella stiff rubber but return to neutral super quick and are excellent for wavedashing and a taller shaft then the current taeyoung out now , the old taeyoung shaft also fits inside a myoungshin fanta , also i have the very first crown303 model from 14 years ago before the . ( new crown 303's 307 309 collar and Jpn version ) was even invented . the actuator on the first crown303 model is bigger then any of the current crowns , it only uses a rubber and its very very fast and it doesnt have that glass over the shaft . i think the older versions of these sticks are much better then their current new versions . i have the past and current versions of these sticks . This was back in the times when korean sticks were not on any websites to buy , the only way of getting them back then was if u knew some1 in korea
"And by the way, a crown Korean joystick is superior because it does not rely on a spring in order to spring back into neutral" - ok, so how do you know myoungshin is not using a rubber grommet too?
Hey, just got done with my razer panthera today and I wanted to say thanks for the help.
Glad it worked out for you!
Did you have to push to drill or it does all the work on its own?
You have to push, preferable with constant pressure. Here's a video showing how it's used: ruclips.net/video/fvumt2z0GLI/видео.html
Joseph Do thank you
hey, will this work with a qanba obsidian?
I believe it will fit, but I don't have the Obsidian, so I can't be sure. The main issue is if you have enough room inside to fit the Kowal plate, and if the stick case has enough depth to accommodate the Fanta sticks. You can find the measurements of the Kowal plate and Fanta sticks online somewhere.
Joseph Do Okay cool thanks
Lol just a fiy, your backdash needs work, you don't input down in a backdash cancel. That's why you're keep getting sway, if done properly, you should only be seeing back, db, back, n back,db, back and so in in your command history.
Just for sway characters this applies. You can definitely do qcb,n~b to bdc with none swayers although if you can execute d/b,n~b (KBD) you will lessen the window you are exposed to long reaching mids like Kaz f+3.
yea i know, the reverse wavedash method is also known as the bootleg method, but like you said, doing the conventional way is the best method, i highly recommend that method to anyone trying to learn backdash cancel
How did you fit the Taeyoung Fanta lever into the Razer Panthera?
Hi Ashenn, you have to drill out the hole and buy a couple of converters. I made a series of detailed tutorials: ruclips.net/p/PLnivzxftldZWFEih2FWau8Ak4Zd9yvZmU
I used a Hori RAP4 for the tutorials, but I basically did the same steps for the Razer Panthera.
Joseph Do I used your videos for my rap 4. It turned out awesome. Thank you so much!!!
can i have a myoungshin fanta :D i want to try it XD
Hah! If I had an extra one, I will do a sub giveaway.
If I wanted to put a japanese style joystick back into my stick, does the larger hole make it incompatible with japanese sticks after you drill it? I was thinking I could just get a plexiglass with the smaller hole size. Or would I have to replace the metal faceplate completely.
You can go back to the Japanese stick just fine, since the screws on the mounting plate are what's holding the stick to the case, the hole doesn't really do anything. You can either get a plexiglass with the smaller hole size like you said, or you can get a bigger dust washer. I just use the dust washer of the American style Happ sticks that I have laying around. Home Depot also sells 2-inch diameter washers of various material if you want to go that route.
Joseph Do Thanks! That helps a lot. Mine came with a Fanta stick and its pretty hard to hit corners with it in street fighter.
Great video. Where did you buy the Taeyoung?
I ordered it from etokki.com, they carry Crown, Taeyoung, and Myoungshin sticks.
This actually makes me wonder if the Crown 307FJ would work better, and cleaner without the spring. Given I've accidentally forgot to put the spring back into the stick once, when i was changing rubber grommets and it still worked very well. However, now I question if I should remove it entirely to emulate the Myoungshin Fanta.
Well, the spring helps with the tension stiffnes, so it really depends on your preference.
Coincidentally, I think the crown 309 is fully rubber grommet, and they have a sanwa mount version that doesn't require drilling out your case. It's like a shorter collar version that will just sit just under your case. I haven't tested it out yet since I'm satisfied with the Myoungshin and Taeyoung.
Can I just use a dremel, to open up the current hole on my Hori RAP 4 kai to 35mm, to fit the Myoungshin Fanta? Or do I need something else?
You will need a step drill bit up to 30mm in size. You can probably do it with a dremel... But I think the step drill bit is more the right tool for the job.
Thank you, my friend, much appreciated, however I heard you say the hole is 35mm's in the video.
Mr do I found a Video with a koreanische some Mod the Drone with crown 309 MJ its a half collar korean Stick try this korean Stick If you had issues with the space in the Case. I use at the Moment the half collar korean Stick from crown. Crown MJ 309 and the SDL 301 DX WHO is in Partnerchip with Infiltration. I want to Transition to full collar korean Sticks like the Fanta or taeyoung or costume Sticks like the fujin lever. I want to know What is good after Using sanwa mounted korean Sticks?
If you are looking for a full collar korean stick, I recommend the Myoungshin fanta.
Thanks Mr do
Will this tutorial work with a Hori Rap 5 lever swap to a 309mj, also do you have a grommet swap vid?
According to focusattack, the crown 309mj is already a Sanwa mount, so you can just do a drop in replacement without doing a lot of the steps I had to do. For grommet swaps, I don't have a video on how to do it, but this video does a teardown of a crown stick so you can see how to open and replace the grommet: ruclips.net/video/FvGQH7zQYRc/видео.html
This is just what I'm looking for. My horn was my first stick. But I didn't like it. I was going to sell it until I stumbled upon korean sticks and how everyone loves them for tekken. Then I found your video on how to mod it. Thanks
Thanks Takohma, I'm glad it helped you out. Myoungshin Fanta is really great for Tekken. Recently I got the Razer Panthera as a gift, and I modded it with the Taeyoung Fanta. I chose the Taeyoung over the Myoungshin this time just to see the difference between the two. I'll do a quick mod walk through and review of the difference between the Myoungshin and Taeyoung sticks soon.
Just wondering about how long this whole process took ? I have an Omni with a taeyoung stick . But I really like the casing for the HRAP
Sorry for the late reply, I've been away in SE Asia so haven't been keeping up. The longest part of the process for me was drilling out the hole. My bit wasn't that sharp so it took me about an hour overall, but depending on your bits, that could go faster or slower for you. Wiring up the joystick was pretty quick since I've done other mod projects before. Hope your mod goes well.
I have a very important question. I followed the wiring section exactly how you said to, and all of my inputs are reversed. Why is this happening?
I've tried reversing all of the wires also, and still no fix. What is going on?
Nevermind, I'm actually dumb. It was backwards. Thank you!
Glad to hear you figured it out.
I'd like to mod my Madcatz TE with the fanta stick, is it possible to do by following your guide step by step?
Falsa rappresentazione di me I don't have the stick myself, but if you read some of the comments, someone else has modified the madcatz TE2. I think it should work. You just have to measure to make sure the mounting plate and fanta stick can fit once you make the hole larger. There is nothing electronic wise that would not work... just a matter of ensuring the physical dimensions will be able to contain the parts.
Joseph Do Thanks, I've checked in the comments, I think can be done with the TE. Also, do you think there is another way to widen the hole without using a drill?
Falsa rappresentazione di me Unfortunately I think drilling is the best way. you can try a saw if you're not concerned about having a circle. a square should be fine too as long as it's big enough to fit the fanta protrusion through.... though i don't recommend it. If you don't have a drill, I'm sure you must know someone who has one you can borrow for an hour or even less, widening the hole is the only part that you really need a drill for.
also id like to add if the holes don't mount with the myoungshin and the kowal plate to your arcade stick, just turn the myoungshin around since it does not matter where u position the microswitches, so u don't have to cut the plastic for it to fit.
Yes you are right. Good catch.
where do u get which color directions the wires are supposed to be? is there a diagram somewhere? edit: nevermind, I just had to look closely at your video and see which color wires u used for each direction. thanks for posting this.
No problem. Qanba and EightArc sticks are a little different if anyone has those. Great that you figured it out. Here's a link anyway to the diagram I used, in case anyone else needs it. www.beckfolio.com/focusattack/crown/guide/q4raf_wiring.pdf
Hey can you put the fanta on a madcatz TE stick?
kevin tala I think someone in the comments said he did it on the TE2... but maybe depends on the version... i would measure the kowal plate and the depth of your stick case to figure out if it fits.
I have the atrox would the myouggshin fit in it?
MightyThirsty the kowal mounting plate measures 95mm by 79mm, so if you open the atrox and check if you have enough room to fit the mounting plate, you would be able to tell if this will work or not. I think it will, but I don't have the atrox so can't answer for sure.
Joseph Do dang i have no idea how to swap it or check since ive never done it before might just wait for the crown like infiltration has right now
MightyThirsty This mod might be a little too advance for you then. Crown does make Korean sticks that are compatible with the atrox's sanwa mount, so that would be the easiest mod if you want to switch to Korean style stick. There are some other youtube tutorials that can show you how to do that.
Joseph Do yea i did a research and found a tutorial who uses the atrox and is using the 303 crown FK thanks for the replies
Great! Good luck modding.
i have wanted to do this with my madcatz fightstick , althought its a crown, now i see someone else have the same idea.
Crown also makes sticks with sanwa compatible mounting holes, though I don't know how different it would feel than the traditional crowns with Korean style mounting. I used one of the sanwa style crowns in another stick and compared to the Myoungshins, it feels too loose.
You never posted the video with the play test. Were you able to close the case fine with the size of the Fanta sticking out of the bottom? I'm thinking of doing this on my RAP 4 Kai.
Yeah, I haven't had time to do a proper stick and button function test video, but I can assure you that it works fine, and some of the people in the comments that went through the conversion have had no issues as well. The Hori RAP4 is a great candidate for this conversion, as there is plenty of room to work with. The case close properly with the Myoungshin fanta stick, no issues in the past 6 months of using it. I'm working on a hitbox custom build currently with a Myoungshin Fanta stick attached. The idea is that you don't have to choose hitbox control or joystick, you can freely switch between joystick/hitbox when you switch characters or games. I've learned a little about video editing too, so my next video won't be so "raw".
Cool man. Well I ordered by step bit from Amazon and the Kowal plate for FA. I just got my Fanta in the mail today from Etokki.com. Once everything comes in I'll get some drill oil and get it done. Hey I ordered a plexi for the RAP 4 and was wondering if I remove the default "sticker art" with a heat gun and put the plexi on, can the step bit drill through the metal AND the plexi? Lemme know what you think. thanks.
Think it's better to do the metal separately from the plexi glass. The step drill will certainly drill through both material simultaneously, but they are different materials so it's better to do them separately in order to make it smoother.
do you think this would work with a venom official ps4 arcade stick?
Moajiz Hussain Probably not judging on the size of the stick. But maybe... If you have enough room to fit in the kowal mounting plate used, it should work... So the important thing is to open up your stick and measure and compare to size of Kowal plate and see if you have room for that. because the kowal footprint is the largest thing for this mod.
Thanks for making these series of videos. Very indepth and helpful.
I'm glad you find it useful. Hope you got your stick modded and working well :-)
Yup. I've modded a TE2 using your videos, and it all went smoothly.
Awesome! Great to know that the TE2 can support this mod as well. I have a Hori RAP4 and a Qanba Drone, and unfortunately the Drone doesn't have enough room for this mod, though I did manage to mount a sanwa compatible version of the Crown 307 joystick. It was a tight fit and I had to bend the pins to get the directional cables plugged in.
Joseph Do what kind of conversion Mountain plate did you get?
Joseph Do the reason I ask that is because I have the same stick I'm going to have to need to know what kind of Mountain plate that is ?
I unscrewed the bottom case but coudn't remove the joystick sanwa, any tips?
You'll need to take off the balltop first, then the screws holding the joystick base to the mounting plate. Try this video, ruclips.net/video/7zwrQDi2yjc/видео.html
