As a soon to be retiree ( 23 Jan ) next year. I've decided to take up photography as a hobby. Your explanation of how a flash works is the best I've seen and I could actually understand everything. From now on it will be down to trial and error.😁
Todd. I found you and I am so glad. I appreciate the manner in which you present everything. Easy to lisrten and learn. (The teacher in you.) Looking forward to seeing everything you publish. MW
Thanks for that! I appreciate your comment. Nice to know I can help and inspire others.
Thanks Todd, very informative!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Love this! Would love one on studio lights!
I’ll make a note if that. Anything specific you’d like to see?
@@Todd_Kuhnsdetermining light placement, and background placement. Working with a 1 light, or 2 light set up. I'm self taught, and "wing" a lot of things lol. Would be nice to see the correct approach to lighting.
@@wrise8471 Thanks for the idea. You've got me thinking and planning.
Very informative video, Todd. Would love to see you continue developing this into a "mini-series" to keep building on flash photography, expanding on one light studio setup, then what difference it makes adding a second light, then a third. Maybe what back lighting does for the subject,, be it an object or a person. Then maybe how light can be used outside, coordinated with sunlight direction. Looking forward to another one! Thanks!
@@ghillieghost4345 Thanks! Always enjoy your input.
Nice beginning tutorial. Bravo.
Ha, you know I’ve attempted this before.
@@Todd_Kuhns It's not an easy subject to teach via video without considerable effort. If I had one suggestion... add comparison images similar to the phone. As visual learner its easier for me to hear the explanation and see the results. Just my 2 cents.
@@robinstone564 good point
Hi, unfortunately you only have the audio on the left channel. If the video is listened to with headphones it is quite painful. It is best to play your video again with the audio source in mono.
Thanks for letting me know
What guided your decision of setting the F stop of the camera specifically to F 22 and holding the exposure for 2 seconds? I only ask since you said the total of all the lenses and the actual light in the area was about 5 and a half stops. I plan on using the same camera but I'm nervous about over or under exposing the image or not setting the aperture correctly where my subject ends up not being in focus. I'm sorry if that's too technical of a question to explain simply.
So, hopefully this will make sense. The camera seems to have one set shutter speed and it isn't marked as to what that is. However, it is a faster speed. Maybe 1/60 or 1/125 or similar. As for the f-stop, I have four choices. I was using a hand held meter but you can also go with the sunny 16 rule which puts your exposure at 1/ISO @ f16. In my case I was using ISO 100 film. I don't remember how I decided on f22 but probably thought the added depth of field would only help in the focus area. Which, by the way, the lens is not super sharp. I was using both a polarizer and a 25 red filter. Together they ate up 5 stops of light which meant opening the shutter to 2 seconds.
Thank you for the video. What camera stand do you use?
Thanks for watching. That stand is an Arkay mono stand jr. it’s an oldie that I got from a photo school I used to teach at. You can buy similar ones still. Look up studio camera stand.
Whats your typical forcal length on your studio stock work?
I’d say my 80mm macro is my go to most of the time.
@Todd_Kuhns thank you!
Thank you Todd for this great video. I hope that the damage to your house from the hurricane will be repaired soon. All the best.
Thank you!!
Thanks Todd!
You're welcome
Hi Todd.....Thanks for taking the time to make this video. One thing that I would like to ask you, is how does someone break into Stock Photography, for example is there a website that someone can go on? Thanks again for the video, Bob
Breaking in is fairly easy. Sign up as a contributor and get started. They will ask you to send in 5-10 initial images before you are approved but once you are you can upload as you wish. I highly recommend adobe stock to start. Shutterstock was always good but their royalties have gone way down in recent years. All the best to you. Let me know how it goes!
@@Todd_Kuhns Thanks again, and I hope that all is going well with the house.
Slow but sure. We will get there.
Thanks for posting. Is it still on my list? For sure, especially as I already have a 1.4 teleconverter which just happens to be compatible with this lens. Would I consider a Fuji 60 or even a Laowa 50? No. They simply don't allow sufficient subject to lens distance IMO.
Since this video I have purchased this lens and it is now my workhorse for much of what I do. Love it, no complaints. Thanks for watching.
@@Todd_Kuhns Have you invested in a 1.4 teleconverter or tried it with the 80mm F2.8 Macro?
@@mosfear I have not. Tell me the advantage or use for that, please.
Lens?
That was the 16-80 f4. Thanks for watching.
A shutter speed of 1/50th and on the ones with fixed aperture F13 is a good starting point on these old Kodak consumer cameras.
Thanks for the input!
I think the appeal of film today is the authenticity. Digital cameras and photo editing software are so good today that producing outstanding results is a trivial task. I think the younger generation is worn out by perfect and sometimes overprocessed images. The film grain and the streaks might have something to do with the film processing. I'm getting back into film after decades away. Thanks for the video.
I think you're right about the processing. And I love the thought about the authenticity of film. That makes a lot of sense and I think you may have just nailed why film is popular again. A win for the photo industry I think.
The 16-80mm is such a versatile focal length.(FF equivalent 24-120mm-can be used for many photographic subjects.) MFD is also a bonus. I have contemplated buying the 16-55mm f2.8, but have not pulled the trigger on that lens, as the 16-80mm has performed very well for its price point & OIS is helpful also. Best wishes for your channel, Todd.
Thanks for the comment. I recently traded the 16-80 for the 16-55. Then they announce the new version! I really liked the 16-80. The 16-55 is a bit more specialized but seems a step up. I need to do a video on it.
Thanks for this. Years ago I was in a camera club which was an outreach of a local church. The wife of one of the leaders always started us off with a bible based devotion that had some sort of connection with photography. I used to marvel at her creativity and how she always had something for us.I have talked about to others of the photography of Matthew,Mark ,Luke and John. They used words not a camera but were using their "camera' for God..Blessings Geoff.
Thank you for your comment. My immediate thought is that I need to do more like this.
@@Todd_Kuhns I will watch with interest.
Thank you. I shot a roll of film om my Rollei TLR last Monday. Took it to the film lab on thursday and got scans in my email on friday. That us amazing service. I was a film photographyerwho had to transition to digital as well. Still shooting some film and reviewing cameras. cheers Geoff

That’s a insane tripod 😂

Happy for you!
Thanks!
Now here I am looking for a video on how to fold a reflector and run across this dumb-ish like the saying go if you don't have nothing to say nice say nothing at all that should apply to videos as well
Thanks for watching. It’s just humor. Or an attempt at least.
I’m glad to see that you're back to “some” sort of normalcy and didn’t have to be out of the house because of structural concerns.
Yes, me too! Thanks for the comment.
I like using the LED lights as a supplement to strobes especially when I use the color temp controls on my LED's. Since I shoot exclusively film it helps me take advantage of some of the color emulsions that are available.
Great point!
As usual inspiring! Do you feel the straight down (head on) perspective reduces the depth of the image?
It definitely does. A flat lay is always a bit more challenging to show depth.
Is this xF50 to 140mm lens
80mm macro.
@@Todd_Kuhns thanks am also looking to buy lens where i thought of going XF90mm or XF50to 140mm. I have XT4 with XF16-80mm which is great at 50 and 80mm focal length. The Purpose of looking for new lens is to do product photography, so which one you suggest ? As per your experience
Can u suggest good XF lens for product photography?
@@umarfarook7775 The 80mm macro is my go to. Fabulous lens, perfect for product, amazingly sharp.
@@umarfarook7775 Both the 50-140 and 90 are awesome. The 50-140 is on my list to get at some point. However, for product the 80 mm macro beats both as neither have a great minimal focus distance. If your product is larger that may not be an issue but if you need to get in tighter the 80 is the way to go.
Definitely , you do better videos than photos
Ouch, thanks? I think.
Feel your pain. We got hit to.
Sorry to hear that. Hope your recovering and rebuilding.
Very well done!!!! But what we expect from you. Maybe this will be a new avenue for you into documentaries!!!! The stress and strain you and your family went through is obvious and hopefully time will heal all wounds.
Thanks Graham.
So sorry, Todd. The combo of rain, wind and falling trees are my biggest fear.
It was crazy for sure. Thanks for the comment!
To say that this is a terrible situation would be a huge understatement, I glad that you and the family are fine physically (emotionally is another story). Hopefully you'll get back to some sort of normalcy soon.
Thank you! We are getting there. The rebuild might be exciting.
Hello, I'm coming from a ZV-e10, taking hair extension product photos with kit lens. Always had blurring around the edges (from lens). Color accuracy is terrible. White balance is accurate, colors aren't. No PP, or anything that would cause it. Had a chance to borrow an XT20 with XF18-55. Same setup, same settings. Didn't enable RAWs. Colors in the JPEGs look like how things are supposed to look. Thinking about upgrading to an XT3. Also considering later Sony models, but worried they have colors similar to the ZV-e10. What's your opinion on the direction I should take?
Tough question! I live Fuji and the colors are so good straight out of the camera. I’m not a huge Sony fan but I know a lot of people who are. If you can dial in all the settings and get a well lit properly exposed image then Sony should do well for you. At least I would think. That being said, I really have been happy with Fuji and it’s hard to go wrong there. If you can manage the 16-80 f4 is a fantastic “kit” lens.
@@Todd_Kuhns Thank you for the reply. That "If" in if you can dial all the settings in is a big one. Everything was so much easier when I had 2 color options. Now we added tons of products, and it's like 36 color variations/mixes, which each variation responding different due to subsurface scattering. Still, the Fuji gets things so much better. Possibly I should move away from the strobes. I think that's also what's making it more difficult to get the exposure right, and getting more predictable results. Possibly take the route of s_log and learn that whole part of everything. Just upgrading gear is quite scary when inexperienced and not having had a chance to work with other stuff. Let's say I'd buy better glass for the zv-e10, I'd be stuck to Sony aps-c. And if I'd ever go more pro, well... it's not a great upgrade path to use aps-c lenses on FF.
So happy you got the electric black!! I've been without power several times. It's much easier in the woods than in town! In a little ole shack very little depends on electric The bigger and newer the house the more dependent it is. Don't know you but you seem reasonable. Thankfully you weren't in the worst of it. How is it going? A body doesn't really know who to listen to. I volunteered after the Joplin tornado. Definitely not an expert on disasters. Joplin was terrible but it is a relatively small area. Parts of the town weren't damaged so some relief wasn't far away. Looking at your area it seems the damage is much more wide spread. Makes a body feel small
We got hit hard with wind and falling trees. We didn’t get the flooding like Asheville did which was much worse. As bad as it was here we were fortunate in a lot of ways. Thanks for the comment.
Can they bury the power from the pole to the house?
I wish. Would seem smarter wouldn’t it?!
@@Todd_Kuhns I guess when you mission is to restore as many homes as you can in a day then doing it the way it was seems to be the best option. Good luck with getting power back. How's the roof and windows coming along?

The kit with the different color attachments have plastic covering all around them. Is that protective and you remove it or is a gel to soften the light and you keep it on.
Just protective packaging. Should be removed but probably doesn’t change anything if you leave it either.
