    Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I have been a freelance photographer for two years, based in Athens, Greece. I shoot mostly fashion, actor's headshots and LinkedIn portraits. The truth is that when I started, I made the same mistake as you mentioned. I was charging per hour. Eventually, I realized it didn't work because of all the work before and after the shoot. I have packages for all these niches, and I have noticed that most clients who ask for headshots, don't want to pay for usage. Your video was very informative. Thank you again. Dear Katja, thank you for giving such a deep dive into your price definition. I have a question regarding the prices for the individual pictures. So many photographers offer 2-3, 5, 10 or for bigger packages more pictures edited. A customer can check out the fully gallery and request on top pf the included few more pictures for a certain price. Could you share a bit the reasoning for this approach? Thank you, Livia

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 5 дней назад

      Dear Livia, thank you for your question. For me the reasoning is that each selected picture takes me time to properly edit. So it makes a huge difference if I need to edit 3 pictures or 30 pictures. Another reason I name in the video: as photographers we are not selling the picture itself, unless somebody is buying an actual physical print, we are selling rights to use a picture in a certain way. So every single use license needs to be compensated individually. Does that answer your question?

  • @MSACoachMike

    Two things - with your fitness goal, training for lifetime fitness is boring. Find a sport to play so that your training has a purpose other than to stay fit. You are more likely to stay with the fitness regiment if you are able to apply your fitness improvements into a sport that you enjoy - it gives your workouts meaning and an additional purpose. With regards to mentoring - if you are leaning towards doing that, then you should build that up in stages. There are quite a few RUclips photographers that also offer 1 to 1 mentoring. There's a bit of a process involved in becoming a mentor and building the required skillset needed to be a mentor would both give you more confidence as a mentor and will make the experience for your mentees more enjoyable. Word of mouth is a powerful form of marketing, and people will not be shy about telling others if they have a great experience or if they have a negative experience. When you have acquired the skillset and confidence, you will also feel confident about charging the market rate rather than a lower than market rate. It also gives you a chance to determine what your strengths as a mentor are so that you can play to those strengths appropriately.

      @@katjafeldmeier Sure. ThePhotographicEye, redandthewolfphotography, kimgrantphotography, fototripper, MarkDenneyPhoto, ian_worth What else is popular is to run workshops - even more photographers do that. Might work for others especially for beginners building your reputation and building portfolio I started only with a used Nikon D3100 n a lens i got from mpb for less than $180 USD total with shipping Now I have a Canon R7 with a couple of lenses

      @UnrealTalent 6 дней назад

      @@katjafeldmeierI'm a social media manager so I do photography as part of it. I'm still a pretty average photographer. $35 is my base price which includes, travel, actual photo session, n post processing. Printing, websites, etc that's additional. But mostly i make money from tips. I don't use a studio, I shoot on location or at public areas. Done a few sports events, done a dozen weddings as part of a team, lots of portraits. But as I grow, I plan to follow some of your plans 😁

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 8 дней назад

      are you asking them? :) no but seriously…remember you are the expert and they are usually the amateurs when it comes to photography. Explain to them that you could put together a shooting for 5000 $ or for 500$ (use a range that matches you here) and it all depends on their budget. You gotta nudge them a bit. Best to get them on the phone with you as early as possible.

    • @The_PlagueDoctor
      @The_PlagueDoctor 4 дня назад

      Just tell them what they will get for $500 or $100. Most people are price shopping until they’ve worked with you. I’d recommend figuring out the editing level needed then adjust the amount of deliverables based on the quality they need. This budget should be the most profitable for you and naturally you can offer better deals when they have a higher budget

    Thanks a lot! I'm trying to be an actor and photographer, also so video and editing. But I'm super new to the scene (in Taipei), and all my friends are saying I'm underpricing myself. I guess I have this video and some time to reflect now. Photograghy started as a hobbie (like most), and kind of accidentlly turned into a job while being a struggling actor. It's better than being a waiter. A friend introduced a gig and more came. So I have basiclly no proir knowledge that I was doing a at least 5000NT gig for 2000NT, until another photographer told me. I'll need to really reconider a lot of stuff if I want to make this serious. It would be better than being a waiter (no disrespect to waiters, I just get streessed and overwhelmed when I do. All the respect to waiters). So yeah. I need some digging(market research) to do. Also quick question, any tips on how you price yourself if you are starting out, and maybe are not cofident enough to charge the same price as others yet, but also don't want to undermine the market.

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 9 дней назад

      Thank you for sharing! I think it’s all a normal part of the journey. About your question: You can build up to it. Just keep saying bigger numbers from one gig to the next. Your confidence will grow with experience. If people say but „we heard you price this much“ and it’s a lower number, tell them that due to popular demand prices have gone up :) being in high demand is always good sign.

    New fan and follower 👐 I have a question I hope you can help with: Do you have any advice for how to tackle content (both face-to-camera videos; clips of yourself with a voice-over etc). when you run a bi-lingual account (like I guess you do as well)? This goes both for Instagram, Linked-In etc. I am based in Denmark / near Copenhagen. I am a product / food / branding photographer and because I get clients both inside and outside my country I have often written captions in both my own language (Danish) as well as in English. But what about video (and talking stories) - how would you suggest to tackle these with a bi-lingual audience? Thanks in advance 🙏

      @katjafeldmeier 9 дней назад

      Thank you and welcome to this little corner of the internet ☺️ As to your question, I personally just decided to do everything in English on my accounts full-stop. Technically correct, but most customers don't understand this and choose the cheapest. Generation Z in marketing departments is used to getting free (low-quality) stuff from friends, cousins, Instagram, free stocks or wherever, but would never pay for licenses or other things. You don't have to pay for images, they're just there, falling from the sky... (ironically)

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 11 дней назад

      Yes, you are right. The goal is to not go for those type of customers and be ok with that! Most people don’t want to pay for a designer piece of clothing, most people don’t want to pay 300$ on a Michelin star restaurant, most people don’t want to pay 4k for a seat in business class…but then again some people will and do want to. and those people understand the difference in quality they are paying for. You gotta market yourself, your quality of work in a way that you actually scare away the majority of cheapsters out there and attract the select few who will be great customers to work with. But your excellent value proposition has to be there.

    I would like to know what you charge for event photography. What is your hourly fee and do you charge additionally for the number of images provided?

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 11 дней назад

      Honestly, I don't really offer event photography, because I don't really like doing it :) I have done it like twice before and #1 was a pro bono client and for a cause which I just wanted to support so I charged nothing. The second one was a company that I usually do portraits for, and it was like a 2h long small team event with a couple portraits thrown in as well. I would have charged more because I dislike events so much... haha, but I ended up giving them a reduced rate because they are a loyal an important client of mine. It was like 800€ for 30 image usage rights plus they bought some additional photos which was another 200€. But in general I think the hourly rate is not a great model, because it doesn't really include the time spent in postproduction (making selections and editing the photos). It also really depends on the type of client, like if it's a commercial event by the brand Gucci vs. if it's Rachel's 21 birthday bash...if you know what I mean. I would ask for their budget (have your own in mind) and yes also pre-determine the amount of pictures you will be providing and the hours you will be on site + hours spent in post production. Hope that helps :)

      @@katjafeldmeier Thanks so much for replying. I shoot one event per year for free because it’s for a good cause. It’s a huge amount of work and while there are some enjoyable parts it’s really hard physically. I have been approached about shooting other events but I don’t know if I want to do them and I know I would have to charge quite a bit to make it worth my time. If I could figure out a pricing guide to give to people I’m sure they would change their minds about hiring me! But I would be willing to do it a few times a year for the right price, I just can’t figure out what that price should be.

      Maybe try thinking of a price that would feel good to you. Even if it sounds unreasonably high in your mind at first.Then you will have set a bar for yourself and have something to communicate.

      @@KS-uv7tw I shoot a few events a year. I charge $500 for a half day. Which is four hours. That is my minimum. And then I charge $100 per hour for any additional hours. Often times I’ll shoot an event from 5 to 9 PM but as 9 PM is approaching the client is wanting me to take a few extra photos that go over the time. This is when the additional hour charge kicks in. Hope this helps.

    Thank you, Katja for great content. I am just starting my photography business journey in Stockholm, so sharing your experiences from your journey are valuable to me. The business aspect of photography is crucial when starting out and I am so happy to have found your channel.

      @@katjafeldmeier I guess the first questions are related to identifying my ideal clients and how to find and get my first clients. Also the licensing parts you mentioned in this video is new to me. Coming from a business background of real estate into the creative industry of photography, I need to learn the photography business.

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 11 дней назад

      ah great questions, I will definitely cover these in the upcoming video. I also already made a video about 'how to get clients' on my channel. So if you haven't seen it yet, you can check that out: ruclips.net/video/6yV2DopVBPQ/видео.htmlsi=Pu4E2DjZdN4RXHfT Also real estate is potentially a great niche for photography if you already know that business and have some contacts in there. It could be an amazing staring point for you and give you a comtetitive edge.

    Nicely done. Thank you for this video, Katja. I'm a chartered accountant and also a photographer. You need to know your CODB (Cost of doing business). This includes depreciation of all your equipment, software licences, insurance, etc. These are your costs that will occur every month irrespective of how much client work you are doing. Think of these costs as your fixed costs. Next you need to know your COGS (Cost of goods sold). These are the costs (including your time) that will vary depending on the client work you are doing. They would also include travelling costs, print costs (if you sell prints). Think of these costs as your variable costs. Your revenue (also called income or sales) needs to cover both your fixed and variable costs plus your desired profit before tax. I would advise anyone who is starting out in business as a photographer (in fact in any business) to complete their business plan, including their marketing plan and financial forecasts.

    Hi Katie I have a couple question, Do you send the PDF after asking for a Budget? What happens if their budget is to low? and Why is Office/ Location less expensive the In Studio , I ask only because I do the opposite.

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 12 дней назад

      If it's a bigger client (a company, a startup etc.) I try to ask for the budget first and then to craft something on that basis. If it's an individual (like for a business photo shoot or for headshots) I usually send the pdf to give them an overview and a benchmark first. But as I have been doing this for a while I kind of have a gut feeling now which one is more suitable for which type of request. What is your usual process like?

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 12 дней назад

      Ah forgot to answer your second question: because I have to pay for the studio and usually need an assistant in the studio. Whereas I can usually do the on location jobs on my own and try use primarily available light.

      @@katjafeldmeierI’m moving towards a consultative sales model this year because I work in many genres, and I find that this approach works best for me. I start by sending an email with a starting price or price range, depending on how much detail the client provides. I also include a few key questions about the project, such as: What type of images are you looking for? ,How many images do you need? Where do you plan to use the images? What’s your budget? Do you have any photo examples for reference? Clients can respond by email or book a discovery call. Based on their answers, I will either create a detailed estimate, provide tailored recommendations, or simply send pricing, depending on their needs. For example, my headshots are priced à la carte: First look (outfit): $250 , Additional looks: $100 each, Retouched images: $50 each , Unretouched images: $25 each, On-location fee: $100 I also plan to introduce a pro studio fee this year. This way, clients can design their own package to suit their specific needs."

    • @katjafeldmeier
      @katjafeldmeier 11 дней назад

      sounds good. if it works for you, it works. I have found that going over these type of questions in a sales call instead of asking them initially by email has brought me better results. I have also found that a lot of clients don't actually know what they want, so very detailed questions tend to overwhelm them easily. So I started asking about the basics and then going into a recommendation/ pitch of what I think would suit their needs best.
