Ka Lepo Pōpolo
США
Добавлен 23 сен 2020
Aloha Fellow Sustainable Advocates and Farmers alike! My name is Ikaika Gante, I am a High School History Teacher from Honolulu, Oʻahu. I have been growing food since I was a boy and have had many opportunities volunteering in loʻi and gardens across Hawaii. My family had a māla (garden) at our home in Honolulu, but our real art was fishing. We lived a half sustainable lifestyle I suppose supplementing a lot of what we ate by gathering from the ocean and our garden. My lineal connection to Hāloa (kalo) as a Hawaiian has always inspired me to test my own ability to constantly observe my plants and their environments and get a better understanding of living sustainably.

Pilialoha & Palehua Harvest
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
Aloha mai kākou, This was when I was still known as Sustainahawaii, when I moved Islands from Oʻahu to Molokai I wanted to change the name of the channel that suited the type of land I am currently cultivating. I live on the side of the island where the soil is black and rich. So I renamed the channel Ka lepo popolo or the dark rich soil.

Misidentifying Kalo
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.3 года назад
Check your kalo, from the corm to the piko and even to the type of environment it may prefer, ask your local kalo farmers to get a good consensus. The positive identification of kalo will continue the knowledge of our ancestors so we can use it to better sustain ourselves here in Hawaii. Drop a Comment! Ke Aloha, Ikaika

Aloha Fellow Farmers, We pulled some Lenalena at 8-9 Months. Grown in a dry environment and also in a māla or a mulched garden. These kalo have a lenalena color to the corm as well as the bottom of the huli after the kalo has been cut away. They have dark green stripes and a light green background to the petiole. Mahalo for Watching! Ikaika
Taro 3-5 Month Growth: Palauan/Hawaiian Variety
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 года назад
Aloha fellow Farmers, We have recently confirmed the identity of this kalo. Its as if we were calling our kids the wrong name the whole time. This kalo is a Palauan/Hawaiian variety and not Kāī Uliuli like previously mentioned on the first few videos. Anyways like uncle Jerry Konanui said about extinguishing the flames of misinformation. I just wanted everyone be updated. Well hope you enjoy th...

Planting ʻUlaʻula Poni: Hawaiian Taro Variety
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.3 года назад
Aloha kākou, Ive been having a hard time identifying this red kalo that could either be an ʻUlaʻula Poni, Kūmū, or Moano. Kalo tend to change in appearance when they are introduced to a different environment. In this video I try to look at the different parts of the kalo to try to see if they show any markings of the kalo varieties listed previously. If you have any manaʻo on what variety they ...

Nice kalo Lenalena❤
Are there any types of plant matter that should be avoided when making FPJ such as Onions, Lime peels, Lemon peels, etc?
Thank you so much
Growth tips, those leaves are old
Very interesting ty
Nice mala! Where can I get a metal o`o stick like yours?
Do you have any cutting for sale??
🤙🏼
Bro are you still growing kalo
Colocasia Hawaiian Punch
Can one use molasses and in what qty. Cqn it be used for chickens?
Make sure!! you add equal parts of Brown Sugar or Blackstrap Molasses or else it will activate the LAB and you will have a disaster of a mess to clean up, it is ok if you use a bit more over, as long as its completely saturated with sugar
Is 1100g sugar instead of 1260 sugar problamatic ?
1100 is the weigh Mixed with the Lab "Juice"(?)
@@Userunknown0208 Depends on how much LAB you're making, as long as it's equal parts brown sugar to LAB you will be good, a visual observation of total saturation is when the sugar no longer dissolves in the LAB solution, the LAB after its saturated will be a syrup consistency, if you're worried about under measuring your sugar, it's always better to add more sugar, you just never want to be under weight because it can become extremely active
@@jordanhuguenard8315 thank you ! I will Put a little bit more in :)
Dumb question but is there a big difference in taste from dryland vs wet kalo?
I cannot wait to try some on my kalo patch!
Good video.my grandson was given a kalo lenalena from his kumu at preschool and wanted to put it in my mala. We are excited to try a new kalo!
I had to move back to the mainland. How I miss lomi lomi salmon and poi. I miss EVERYTHING. Mostly the people. Aloha BTW, great video
I'm from Indonesia, can I buy the seeds? I want the black one and the pink one, ula ula poni And ula ula kumu
Lenalena looks beautiful almost like yam or kumara when boiled.
Kia ora from Aotearoa. I have a question. Why do you cut the huli? Why not plant the root with the huli if it's only a small root?
Aloha from Cleburne Texas .Iam from waipahu.I been in Texas over 20 years.I have a tree farm nursery here . I bought some taro from a local grocery store its growing in container . Next spring like pump up the production. Love your videos.
My LAB has a pink tinge to it - any idea what this means?
Mahalo, harvested my Lenalena that was given to me. Had to search this variety since this is the first time I saw a yellowish taro. Also wanted to learn how others prepared and ate it.
I am indigenous Montagnard Jarai we have bean eat taros for centuries the leaves and sterns we make soup sp So delicious
Mahalo for sharing Braddah. Please give an update on the Lehua ‘Oni‘oni‘o I bought one and was told it was Lehua ‘Oni‘Oni‘o but can’t find much online about the variety so I like see how it looks when fully grown
I bought some hulis from Oahu and Kauai. I can tell U dat now dat the plants are growing a couple months. I'm unsure as to what the sellers sold me. On Big Island I did buy Maui lehua, lehua maoli, and was given over 30 by J. Konanui in 1995. I've come to the conclusion to just grow taro/kalo for food becuz we may need it incase the worst happens for the Islands being isolated and having 90% of our food imported from elsewhere. so grow kalo/taro. mahalo.
Sorry to break it to you but 4ml is not a 1000th of a gallon
You the first guy I watch who say how much rice and water to use.Mahalo
Did you hear him say it dosnt matter?
Much love for ur work. I would like to use mango tree leaves for this.
Braddah get advise to grow Kalo in SoCal (zone9) ??

I dont have too much knowledge in growing so trying to find info and this was a great start. E Malama Pono!
