Wait. What’s wrong with your voice? I enjoyed hearing (and watching) your video.
The fact that it didn't win a single Emmy, is actually criminal...
you better be working on a season two vid. like if not, please drop everything.
This video was incredible. I loved it. The analysis of CLASS was so nuanced and it gave me a new perspective on the characters on this show. I need a S2 break down ASAP! 😭
I just finished season one and I thought it was.. fine. I liked the acting from everyone and was shocked how well Sydney Sweeney did (I don't watch that shitty Euphoria because I don't consider glamorizing trauma or sexuality "good television."). Her character didn't deserve Quinn and I didn't care about most of the characters aside from the family, Tanya, Belinda and Armond. Oh and bless Belinda for helping Tanya out and giving advice Rachel and helping her stand up to Shane (couldn't stand him!).
everytime i rewatch the series i watch this right after. amazing analysis. hard to believe 8 episodes can feel so dense
i was genuinely surprised when i realized this video did not have 1+ views
I also think Paula encourages Kai to steal the braceletes as an indirect way of getting back at Olivia.
Great, now we need a video about season 2 before season 3
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for your hard work
I can't wait to hear what you have to say about season two 👀
You can't describe modern class relations without referring to Marx, no disrespect to all the anthropologists and sociologists out there but their disciplines are so fundamentally steeped in bourgeois ideology that - for all their insights - they tend to miss the forest for the trees and wind up fundamentally misunderstanding and/or misrepesenting the real nature of class relations which originate in the relations of production which then prefigure the inequity in distribution. Modern slogans like the "99%" completely highlight this confused liberal attitude towards class society, which is not a historical or revolutionary critique of class society as such so much as curbing its worst excesses. The idea that people are 'rediscovering class' is laughably middle class ignorance, all workers understand what class is, its middle class liberals who've tried (and failed) to integrate matters of economic inequality into their self-serving identitarian ideology, and well-meaning as they may be their ideas fall completely flat because they have no insight to the real origins of capitalist society, its defining characteristics and the contradictions which actually allow the weapon or critique to evolve into the critique of weapons - i.e. that the proletariat has the capacity to end class society and no one else, it's the working class's antagonistic relationship to capital, its role in operating the productive forces, its socialisation by the economic mode and total dispossession from the means of production which makes it a revolutionary agent capable of actually ending class exploitation entirely. Having rejected the centrality of the class war, liberals and middle class identity politicians wind up running around in circles and incapable of escaping performative activism (at best), and actually expanding the domination of capital, modernising the means of political repression and undermining class solidarity and class consciousness at worst.
This video is insane wow.
3000 likes and 0 dislikes is something I don't think I've ever seen. Kudos.
This was an amazing analysis! I'm so glad I found your channel ❤
Burton survivor single is so real
This is extremely underrated
As a true fan of both last of us games, @mertkaykay made a video analysis of the game that gave me some seriously uncomfortable reflection of the series, and I would genuinely love your perspective on it. She comments on the forced emotions given to the player in order for the story to work, as well as draws very disconcerting parrallels between the last of us part 2 and the war between Israel/Palestine and Neil Druckmans personal biases and how that was reflected in game. I would just overall love for you to touch on this topic more, as the last of us is something I hold so closely to my heart, but unfortunately now have a somewhat tarnished view of.
Hello! You sent me down a rabbit hole so I watched her TLOU2 analysis from 2022 and parts of the "The Last of Us Manipulated You" video that you referenced. I took a ton of notes lol, and if I ever decide to return to The Last of Us on my channel it's definitely given me a lot to think about. I don't wanna go through point-by-point of MertKayKay's video (which was overall well-thought out and argued) with everything I disagreed with, and also have like no interest in inter-RUclipsr disagreements lol. I guess if I had to summarize my thoughts on her critique, it seems like the theme of revenge and cyclical violence wasn't emotionally resonant for her, and therefore the story of Part 2 fell flat for her in most ways. Which makes sense! I think I have a fundamental disagreement with the idea that the game points a finger at the player to make us feel guilty for Ellie's actions. By about day 2 of Ellie's part I was like... ok girl you have lost the plot lmao. The tension between me as the player, Ellie as the character I'm "controlling", and the linear narrative/decisions she makes was fascinating to me and I haven't experienced anything quite like it. Maybe I need to play more games, but I don't think I've played a game where what I wanted the character to do and what the character was doing were so opposed (I also play a lot of RPGs and less linear-narratives). On the Israel/Palestine comparison with the WLF/Seraphites, it certainly warrants a serious analysis and discussion, and I fully agree with everything she said regarding the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. That being said, I think a 1:1 comparison between the two falls apart fairly quickly, and (this was just my experience by the end of the game) I saw the WLF as entirely in the wrong, and think the writing intentionally painted them that way. Ultimately, I think it speaks to the power of narrative and story that a game released nearly 5 years ago can still generate this level of discussion, analysis, debate, and emotions. Our relationships with stories are not static, they can evolve and change and we can fluctuate between adoration and intense critique. If anything, I hope her video encouraged you to replay the games with a new lens and make up your own decision on what works, what doesn't work, what's resonant, and what makes you uncomfortable. Thank you for the recommendation!
@nickcurl thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, I didn't expect such a thorough response! I completely agree with you regarding her review of the last of us part 2, I actually just watched that after I wrote my initial comment. I was initially referring to her "The Last of Us Manipulated You" video, which I found more powerful and found myself more struck by what she had to say. No hate towards her, but I agree that a lot Part 2 didn't resonate for her in the same ways it did for me, and she kind of dog piled on the game in ways I didn't agree with. Before watching her videos I had just watched all of yours, which actually led me to her video on the last of us, and I figured you would find some of the comparisons interesting. I definitely see some similarities being drawn between WLF/Seraphites and Israel/Palestine. The WLF living in a sort of kibbutz like society in the stadium, with shared farming and resources, with children going to school despite the war torn/post apocalyptic environment, it seems like an interesting comparison. Especially with Isaac being a warmongering merciless character, he could be analogous to Netanyahu. Which many Zionists are still critical of, and Neil could fall into that category. The discovery of Neil's zionist beliefs honest hurt my love for the the game quite a bit. I went on his Instagram to see if that Israel flag post was still up after everything that has happened, and sure enough it was. I have a hard time separating the art from the artist, and the morals around that whole concept in general. Another thing that stood out to me is where she points out how the game forces you align with Joel morally through the lack of empathy, forceful emasculation and lack of logic employed by Marlene and the fireflies, paired with Ellies lack of consent, that makes the narrative a lot less of an interesting grey area that I initially found it to be. I've played the first game at least 5 times, but the second game only once. The overall darkness and emotional weight has sort of prevented me from revisiting it, but I think you're right. It would benefit me to play again with a renewed perspective and see how much I feel the comparisons she made hold up with a fresher perspective. Thank you for giving me more to think about, and I can't wait to see the other content you produce in the future, I value your insight!
WOW the Lotus Eaters reference! WOW
Leaving another comment after watching the part about Belinda's character, GREAT analysis, and as a Black woman watching Belinda's story throughout the season, I thought a lot about the idea of white fragility making it challenging for Belinda to pointedly call out her experiences impacted by systematic racism (and classism). Also this idea of Black women always having to disproportionately shoulder the emotional/physical burdens of others - as Malcolm X said: "“The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman." At the scene where Rachel is venting to Belinda about her predicament, I agree that it was cathartic for her to get up and walk away...I also found myself wishing, as you pointed to, that Belinda and Rachel could somehow *switch lives*, so that Belinda would be the one to so easily access this class mobility through marriage, and then that got me thinking about the politics of desirability, what Western culture has deemed "beautiful" and who gets to fit that mold. And great point too about all of these dynamics being more subtle than said outright. Just such a stellar show! I did sense that it is very "Parasite"-coded as a black comedy, to me one of the most phenomenal movies ever, so really appreciate you mentioning that earlier in the video too I feel like I am better understanding elements of great film and TV that I appreciate the most!!!
This whole season AND this video make me uncomfortable in a good way. Like I want to turn it off and look away, but only because it shows insights into my own complicity in the crimes I perceive, identify, call out, and then proceed to do nothing about. So, ouch, and thanks.
Just watched both seasons of The White Lotus after hearing about it for a long time and still watching but have to leave a comment to say such EXCELLENT and thought-provoking analysis, so many references I am marking to learn more about later and have been Googling things while watching, can't even imagine the time it took to work on this, thank you for this
perfect video length, immediately subscribed, amazing work!!! please continue! also your voice is literally perfect for this type of video essays
This was so outstanding!!! Cannot wait to see more.
The power of such a great video essay as an accompaniment to a fantastic piece of art is a testament to your writing. The way you were able to articulate some of the thoughts I had about the show that I was not able to but deeply felt is very gratifying. Thank you so much. Please keep doing what you're doing. Also, RIP Jean-Marc Vallée. This was truly a great loss. No one could tell stories the way he told them.
Omg please do lengthy deep dives for all the seasons! I could listen for 7+ hours. Favorite show, it’s so voyeuristic, like I’m watching humans in a zoo. Fascinating stuff and commentary.
pls make more videos - you are evrything
you made my day at my job! listening to this made it bareable
Shout out to Rachel for winning season 47 🙌🏽 Also I need to marry a man with a voice like yours. Just talk me to sleep every night please 🫠
2:44 Wow, while I haven't seen any of these seasons of Survivor, I can believe some are better than True Detective S1 and The Wire... but nothing beats Twin Peakss: The Return. Love that you specified "The Return" as well. That's the one season to rule them all.
One of the best video essays I’ve ever listened to, especially with regard to composition, flow, actual analysis (as opposed to almost precisely just narrating the events without much added insight, either personal OR research-backed), and cross-topic relevance. Really thoughtfully crafted and stunningly executed. First video I’ve watched of yours, but I’m subscribing. And I have never even watched nor had any ounce of desire to watch Survivor or any reality television, but you tied it in to your overarching points and the themes and characters of White Lotus so elegantly. Overall lovely work!
The fact that you seen the wire. Love It
I just finished the first season and can’t help but think that Olivia is in love with Paula for these reasons. 1. The asmr scene. 2. Her response to Quinn saying they were doing lesbian stuff. 3. When she sees Paula with Kai she can’t help but watch like she was extremely heartbroken. 4. When her and Paula had the argument in the finale she goes to her mother to cry and looks genuinely sad. She didn’t seem like she was just using her friend for status. I think Olivia goes after every guy Paula is interested in because she is in love with her and either doesn’t truly know it yet or doesn’t know how to process her emotions. I could just biased or reading into it to much🤷♂️. Regardless, beyond incredible video👏. Your analyzation skill’s, knowledge l, and dedication are exceptional. You’ve definitely earned a follow and a future fan. Keep up the great work!
That makes sense to me
Kinda a little bit like Cassie on Euphoria, i got the same kind of vibe lol. The high scene of both when there arrives Tanya, looked like the scene on Euphoria of Rue and Jules on drugs. I love shows like this :) xd
put on _You Were Never Really Here_ and then this series for a depressing 'exploration of trauma, violence and child abuse through character study' double-feature no one asked for
Amazing, phenomenal, please do season two!!! ❤
I've watched the show twice just to let everything soak up in my brain from all the emotions and thoughts this series births. It really makes perfect sense when you apply "we see the world through Camille's eyes" and that's exactly how it felt, even after when the show ended my eyes were capturing my surroundings like the camerawork in the series, but also giving a deeper meaning to objects around me. Even though the ending was called "unsatisfying" i highly disagree as well, it ended exactly where it had to and that's what most series lack, a sense of ending instead of dragging the story. It leaves you to think about what happened without too much information racing your brain and really allows you to give your own twist of how you viewed Sharp Objects and the impact it left on you. Personally, i admire the bravery of a woman to sit down and write about what it is like to be viewed (as a woman) "poisonous" by nature, even in flowers, even in fruit ( which women get compared or referred to) for example a plum cherry, sweet and fresh, but still with a black poisonous pit. The exploration of the matter fascinates me to the core while makes me want to dive deeper into it, which is something the series captivates perfectly.
So glad you showed up in my feed, great analysis!
i needed this
i thought i skipped to a srvivor video???
Hey amazing video, could you mkae one for season 2 please please please
What was the other series besides big little lies you mentioned? I remember being really intrigued by the name and you said don’t let it get ruined for you but I can’t find where you mentioned it and it’s a 45 minutes video so I can’t find it. Thanks if you see this ❤
UNreal on Lifetime?
Camille / Millie
This show made my skin crawl. Usually I pride myself in being able to predict plot twists, but with each one I thought could be the twist, it just made me feel sicker and sicker 😭 such a well crafted story and TV show
Bravo on this concise, thoughtful, video. Substance! So rare! Wow it feels good. (Edited to say I meant so rare in the universal sense not you btw)
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Common refrain but why doesn’t this channel have more subs? As a 6k channel myself, I feel your pain, man. Great vid, needs more attention
Please make a season 2 review. ooooooooo
Best transition
Concise, thoughtful analysis. Loved it.
So glad i found u!! ❤
