If noticed that you're looking at colours in some of the most expensive paints such as Farrow & Ball. In case you didn't know, you can get almost an identical match mixed up in cheaper brands at Dulux, Brewers & Crown Decorating centres

No. In the UK we have something called listed building status for historically interesting buildings. However this house was turned into flats before that was introduced so it's not listed. However there are still lots of regulations I have to follow the same as a modern house (building code).

I wish you’d get rid of the doorway onto the flat roof, it’s not as though it overlooks anything worth looking at. We have a triangular chimney wall in the bathroom of our old vicarage but ours hasn’t been disconnected from the flue.

Gosh! Your plumbing quotes are so vastly different between them from £28,000, then £75,000, to £120,000 which is 148,828.56 US Dollars. How on earth does one even begin to decide which quote will actually deliver the desired result? Do higher quotes always engender some kind of inner trust that the high quoters know what they are all about in the trade? What a choice and a dilemma, unless you had some additional third party references that saw the lower quoters not up to the job? Clearly 'leaps and bounds' are the order of each day with the adventurous renovation to your home. The stairs to my way should, where possible, be an 'open string' aspect rather that that 'closed string' that blocks off and hides the stair treads. And, to end your video what a gorgeous treat for you to have located the history of your house with those amazing archival photos that you could scan, with permission of the lender, and have prints arranged into a framed and hung display? In that way the 'ghosts' of your home are tangible friends who, like you as we all are in our old houses, custodians passing by.

I thnk that unless you have masses of light coming in, the dark brown/red over everything in the hallway will be very dark. Highlighting the wood with a contrasting or lighter tone on the walls would be better. Just my thoughts, if they are of any use.

Wow. You guys are doing such a fantastic job. I love checking in to see how you are holding up as renovating an historic building can be exhausting and to see the latest discoveries. This episode did not disappoint. BTW, painting the stair case in the Reddish Brown would be great but the rest of the hallway needs to be lighter so it feels open and airy. I bet you can find a nice soft yellow or maybe a sage color that would complement the staircase. I'm sure you'll find the right color that you love. Keep going!!

First job, clean chimneys get the fires going. Being old state owned put the fires back in. Free wood/coal. Oil or gas heating will be too expensive, unless its a rental & also assume its 3 new build 3 story blocks so when gas/oil heating fails in one part you have 2 other parts to live plus immersions & seperate tanks for hot water. Old style works ..

Oh wow, things are coming along. Seeing those photos was interesting and how good to be able to talk to someone who once lived there. I like the servants staircase minus the partitioning wall. Looks so much nicer. The red/brown stairs and side would look nice, even for the attic stairs but I think that that should be all that should be painted a red/brown colour. If there is too much of it I feel it would take the wow factor away from it. But that's just me. Go with your gut feeling, I'm sure you will have the house looking very elegant. I can't wait.

Pleased use that dark red brown as an accent only. If you do the walls too, it will be so dark you will need a flashlight (torch) to find your way thru the halls. It will be like finding your way thru a lightless cave.

Really good episode. I’m still flabbergasted by how circuitous the route that the pipes have to take to get hot water into the main house! I wonder whether there could have been a way of positioning the boilers closer, and the piping being more direct, when the heating system was installed by the previous owners. The water must lose a fair bit of heat having to travel the distance it does.

The woodwork repainted in the new oxblood colour will be nice - I can see painting the baseboards, doorframes etc in it also. But a very pale wall paint or light wallpaper to set it off. Oxblood on the walls too would make the area feel like you're being swallowed by something. It's still quite a narrow passage so I'd think waiting to do all that until after all the big furniture and so on has gone through and finished gouging the walls.....

3:14 I live in a 1907 house, well a flat, that appears to have two sets of windows built with a wall dividing them. On the outside they line up nicely, on the inside, they are up against the wall and the moulding top and bottom just ends, with no moulding on the wall side. A corner room that was just a scullery off the kitchen has a window in one corner ‘joined’ to the bathroom window on the other side, and a window diagonally across from it which is joined up to a pair of windows in the kitchen itself. We know the layout hasn’t been changed, and all 8 flats are set up this way, the scullery and kitchen spaces have been reconfigured by removing internal walls, in most, but the windows aren’t changed. There’s also a bathroom door so close to a wall that where it should have moulding on that side, it’s just a flat piece of inch wide wood that fits up to the plaster. I don’t know why they didn’t place the door another inch and a half the other way so it could have a normal bit of mouldin, there’s room for it. As for the two bathroom doors, it wasn’t added with the flats as the stairs were built right over the door framing. The door is more modern than the opening for it. I think the room was divided long ago, perhaps by the military during the war, or perhaps when plumbing was added. Even if it wasn’t always two bathrooms, perhaps one side was a reduced ‘whatever it was before’ room, or it was just used as a storeroom, with that half a window for some light and ventilation.
