I am a retired architect and was pleased to see you prepared a floor plan immediately. As you have been finding the service stairs useful I hope you will consider keeping them. Such a large house needs a "back stair" to help keep the front staircase clean and welcoming. (They are probably original to the house as they go all the way up to the servant''s quarters on the top floor.)
I have lived in a normal size Victorian semi house that still had its rear servant stairs. They are still really useful and make the house flow. Neighbours have had theirs removed and it just doesn't work. And, it's a conversation piece, people are very interested to see/use them. Do consider keeping yours, in such a large house, you will come to value them.😊👍
Great to have in case an emergency occurs! I would really hate to have to say, geez I wish we had kept those stairs😢!!! I think they are really nice! Just as much as I Hate that wall by the top of the banister!
It's amazing to see how much you've done since last video. Never apologise for not filming in real time. We all can see the hard work and long hours spent removing unwanted items. We are hapoy to join you and follow your progress. The transformation already is massive. It will be wonderful to see it restored as a family home😊
I always like to think that old houses breathe a sigh of relief that someone is actually caring for them and adding to their story. And The courtyard is a triumph!
There are people who like seeing the actual labor that goes into clearing out a house, but I'm not one of those people. Just walking through the first video with you was enough to realize that every room presents a challenge. Now comes the good part...the transformation. The benefit of you explaining what you feel needs to be done is that there seem to be a few experts who may give, and have given you some really good advice. I'm sure you'll be happy to share the success of this venture with all of those good souls who took the time to examine your videos and gave very technical instructions, and it's to your credit that you graciously and gratefully accept their input. You are both doing great and the fact that you both have work and/or school outside of this project is absolutely astounding to me! I trust you are looking after each other and making sure you're taking care of yourselves as regards your health. We are all anxious to see, as I think Emma said, the first bit of new paint on those walls, but just cleaning it up has been a huge improvement and really lets us see the promise this beautiful old rectory holds!
Please, please, please do not apologize for the video. Speaking for myself I much prefer as you're doing now. I think we all understand the enormity of this project. 👍👍👍
Don’t apologize for anything, we’re all just appreciative to be sharing the journey with you both. Getting a lot done before wintertime is a ticking clock before it gets cold and harder to work even indoors with no heating. You just stay and do what you need to do, we’ll follow. So excited to be following your journey, a lovely house even now and the potential of making it your home is going to be such a lovely series of videos to look forward too. Thank you, Maureen.
It's great, I'm sitting here with my feet up, a cup of tea next to me, and I'm watching other people do all the work. I will enjoy the finished house very much!
I appreciate how good you are at explaining what the renovation entails. Taking us from room to room helps us see the "bones" of the house, something we don't always get in other renovation videos. I cannot wait to see the changes to come!
I love the before and afters, because we can see the huge amount you've managed to get done in a relatively short time. It's like a slow unveiling and builds the anticipation. You're doing a great job and it's going to take time. Hang in there!
The old water tanks from the attic can be used as large plant “pot”. Fig trees like to have their roots contained…and we used an unneeded water tank for our figs many years ago…they are thriving and productive😀😀😀
Good suggestion! It's excellent for other crops, too, and can become an architectural feature in the garden. Disguised with pallet boards and/or painted, they can be quite attractive. Just don't forget the drainage holes and some gravel, then use woody trimmings to fill in at the bottom, like hugelkultur in a container.
Or they would make a nice water feature in the garden, buried with rocks and plants, and either just a little aerator pump/spray fountain or a waterfall.
I've lived in multiple old houses, and I always tell someone renovating a home to be sure and seal up each room as you work on it to prevent rats from getting in. Old houses are notorious for having little holes that the little monsters can enter...
No apologies needed! Sometimes before and afters work better than all the same work shots. You'll find your way as you go along, and you'll learn what works, when to do time lapses, what music works, when to use subtitles for explanation (sometimes way easier than trying to talk thru it) what makes good editing, all that. Thanks for letting us come along for the ride! You've gotten a lot done, wow! I know renovation is hard work, but I hope you can find ways to make it fun, and if I can give you one piece of advice, it's to smile!
Thank you for sharing & for allowing us all to accompany you & Emma on your journey of transforming & renovating the Rectory. Wishing you both every success 😊
No need to apologise about your video format, the walk-around and chatting is perfect for what you're presenting, it's the before/after aspect which is most interesting! You mentioned small jobs making a difference (hear me out on this because it will sound insignificant), clean all the faces on your light switches and plugs. It might sound silly but they will be like little beacons of cleanliness while the walls are waiting to be sorted, it will make a difference to your wellbeing if not make for good content.
I would think the annex would provide a great temporary residence while you tackle the main house. No doubt the project will require more time than you ever imagined, so why not establish a comfortable get away from the work and mess each day. Love seeing your progress.
That is a top notch Idea, and practically essential to cutting down on the need to travel back and forth to the job. Does not have to be a finished job just get the kitchen and bathroom working fit out a bedroom and some secondhand furniture and your gold. another benefit is some heating in there will dry the place out and help prevent any mold returning.?
I consider myself (and other viewers) lucky that you find time to do any video work at all. Getting the work on the house done on such a part-time basis is enough to be going on with. Well done so far!
No worries, Charlie about action shots or editing. The before and after walk arounds are really great. Plus, your drone shots are really interesting to see the progress. You and Emma are literally on your hands and knees bringing this amazing structure back to its original glory. Thanks for sharing your adventure. It's very interesting. Be well.
I'm impressed with your undertaking. It's looking so much better already. I think it will make a lovely home. No to mention saving a historical building.
The garden is looking so much more civilized - what a job that initial mowing was! I just started my own compost piles this year, and I've learned that just a pile of green stuff doesn't break down very quickly. Some manure and a regular watering will help it go more quickly. As with everything little research goes a long way! Well done in hiring the plumber, architect and asbestos inspector! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. What a huge amount of clearing out you two have done - you can begin to see what the Rectory will look like. Well done!
As you're learning, a happy compost heap wants green and brown. Too much fresh greenery can just go all slimy and rotten on its own, so you can layer in torn-up brown cardboard, paper and newspaper (no color print!), kleenex, paper towels etc, layered with some soil, to stand in for dry leaves etc.
The courtyard looks amazing now! Loving the fact you took all the flat front doors off; I can literally feel this place "breathing" again. Great work so far guys, keep the vids coming!! Watching from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤😊
I understand the need to de-isolate the flat areas but at some point those areas will need an electrical supply. That is a large property and will need a lot of heating in the colder months. Have you given much thought as to how that will be done?
Before you finalise a plan with the architect can I suggest you see if you can find something about how the room layouts where originally. This might help with what you do with the layout. Also as you are seeing how useful the servants stairs are I hope you reconsider losing them. They are part of the history of the building after all and will be useful to a house that big
Many kind greetings from Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. Congratulations on your new home. We enjoy watching your videos and wish you much success in the future projects ahead. Thank you for sharing this process with us. Looking forward to the next video!
It's clear how comfortable you are both getting with the whole video thing, the editing and presenting is getting better and better with every video.😊👍🏻
You have made so much progress in a month. Amazing thus far and as projects go, you learn along the way. Thank you for taking us along and showing us the rooms!
I Love the before and after footage and, of course, any footage is a gift to us all so just do what you can. The work is the important thing. We are just your cheering and enjoying squad. It is such a beautiful property. Great decision about the annex; leaving it alone for now as a useful base!
If you find the original hard wood floors ,just sand them back to bare wood and reseal the wood and make it feature of rooms the hardwood flooring is in , it could actually save money for other projects in the Rectory .
One problem, and I don't think it's been mentioned by anyone else yet .. is the running costs of the house after renovation. i.e. it's a big old house to heat. Wooden floors - while lovely to look at - are very cold and can cool down a house quite a lot, and are cold to walk on during winter months. So there are some advantages to a decent thermal underlay and carpet.
@@zedzeduk just get a couple of big rugs and place the furniture around the edges of the rugs with either side tables with a coffee table in the middle of the rugs at the same distance from each piece of seating in the formal rooms , while the wooden floors make for easier cleaning in the rooms with high foot traffic . In the upper floors it also has the advantage of the same easy cleaning methods with wooden floors unless it's a bedroom where you have the bedrooms carpeted for warmth and it keeps the cost of renovating the floors down as the rooms with carpets will be expensive to buy depending on the type of carpet if the house is fully carpeted .
I can’t imagine wanting wall to wall carpet in such a space - or any space: the floor will never be clean because you can’t wash the floor and it gets impregnated with dust, human skin waste, etc., etc.: very unhygienic! If I had such a place, I might consider is underfloor heating under wood floors and same under tile in the kitchen and bathrooms.
What a great project/journey. Wish Iived near to help. My two cents are: Watch out for the mold in there!!! Certain kinds could also be a health Hazzard! Best of luck, will watching from from across the pond in USA. You'll teach the rest of us too.
You've made lots of progress so far. It's made a world of difference. Your subscriber numbers have increased greatly, too, i noticed. Think i was one of the first few hundred you had. This will make an excellent family home.
You should both be proud of how much you have done so far, looking really good. So glad you are getting the Asbestos survey undertaken, take it from me, that is a major milestone in your redevelopment journey, you will have a sense of freedom when done, so you can work safely, keep the content coming.
My hubbie and I just want to see the before and after. I do like your walk around when you explain what you’ve done, and what you are planning to do. Great video! I keep imagining a huge natural pond in the ‘front’ for wildlife to come. Also less grass to mow for your mum. Love how you are almost surrounded completely by trees. (Maybe plant a couple trees so you don’t have the view to the left.😊)
No, your videos are very welcome, love seeing the bones of the house gradually revealed. It's such a beautiful house and will be amazing when you've finished. Understandably that will be quite a long time in the future but you've made such good progress in just a month and appear to be the type of people that get stuff done I expect we'll be happy to watch the ripping out of walls etc. I'm especially looking forward to Emma's interior decorating. The courtyard looks wonderful and the lawn will very soon turn lush and green. You have definitely done the right thing buying that house, it will make a fantastic family home and will be worth so much more than you paid for it so all good. I wish you well.
Renovating, remodeling and gutting out take all the time and energy so before and after are gonna have to be the norm! As someone who gutted and remodeled a retirement cottage while my husband was still working away from home didn’t leave much time for filming which we never did. It took us 14+ years because we had one and 1/2 days each week to make progress. Not much time in the world of renovating/remodeling. I’m truly enjoying your journey and anything you share is worth viewing!!!:):):)
Looking good….having the place open should freshen things up, you look like you’re working hard, glad to see your wearing protective clothing! Much further down the road in your remodelling….but if you are replacing the windows in the priory you could recycle the old windows for a greenhouse in your garden. Don’t apologise for your videos…they are good to watch!
I had asbestos removed from my 1885 house. It was very expensive. Rooms were sealed off, workmen had a clean-dirty showers in a huge van parked outside, the inspector visited 2 days running to measure fibres content in the air, after the removal. Quite an ordeal. But it must be done. Good luck!
Thank you so much for sharing with us! All very interesting. Don’t stress out about the videos as long as you give us something to look forward to view. We want to be with you all the way on this journey. 👏👋😘
I think your presentation of work updates is terrific and you're making great progress on a number of areas. Glad you caught that asbestos issue before you got too deep into the danger zone. I have to say the opening scene was sweet with Mutley walking toward the camera - great music choice haha! I must say I don't like comedy skits per se but this quick cute moment is charming.
Sending love and light from a British Canadian, from Ontario! We have a saying over here..'Git Er Done!' LOL Just love watching your channel! Looking forward to following your journey on the restoration of this beautiful building!! Has been a busy summer for me here in 🇨🇦. Will get caught up on what you and your partner have accomplished so far. Xx
I stumbled across your first video a couple of weeks ago and watched your progress each video since. I am very jealous, the building will beautiful again once you’re done and the garden is an absolutely amazing canvas to create a peaceful sanctuary in. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I’m so thrilled for you.
Thankyou sooo much for sharing your videos! I am a gran in South Australia and it is like “ going home” watching you restore this lovely building. Sending blessings!
We are enjoying your videos. Looks like you have done heaps of work already. The 'Header Tanks' would make great veggie/herb garden beds, drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage, and they'll last forever.
Exciting things ahead! I love watching these videos and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest if it’s not all flash and dandy, I like the no nonsense approach and everything makes sense and shows what’s going on perfectly fine as far as I’m concerned.

Your videos are fine. I for one will be here til the end. This is a fascinating project and I am enjoying the journey!

What you have done so far is really opening the place up. Can't wait to see the wall by the staircase removed. Looking good!

You can use the plastic bins out back for your compost. I like that you are turning the rectory back into a home.

Thank you very much!
Sending love and light from a British Canadian, from Ontario!

The 'Header Tanks' would make great veggie/herb garden beds, drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage, and they'll last forever.
Much improvement 👍
❤ Great work

Exciting things ahead! I love watching these videos and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest if it’s not all flash and dandy, I like the no nonsense approach and everything makes sense and shows what’s going on perfectly fine as far as I’m concerned.
Great work. Starting to see the potential. Use the old water tanks as planters in the garden. Paint them too.
Compared to the US… That was a tremendous value on your plumbers it was amazing… The US would be sending out thank you notes for that❤
We were also surprised by the price!
