@ Mt. Everest, Incorrect, the German language in the movie correctly reflects the way German was spoken in the 50ies; I certainly do not know whether that was by design or mistake in this movie. I also have to put Horst Engards post in perspective. You are correct by today's standards but in the 50ies "conquering" the highest peaks was still a matter of national pride. Most German mountaineers were still massively influenced by Nazi doctrine. To be first, i.e. better than others, the whole idea of suffering, heroic self sacrifice for the group, the idea of one leader, a dictator in the literal sense of the word, glory for the nation... That was largely the mindset these people still had. After all, the regime had perished less than 10 years before and Nazis had been huge supporters of German alpinism, their influence was still everywhere in society in general and in mountaineering in particular. Now to be very clear: I am certainly in total disagreement with such philosophies. Any serious alpinist will subscribe to the mantra "To summit is optional, getting down is mandatory", which also tells my feelings about the madness on Everest today, those rich idiots who climb it merely for the photo on top and the countries who prostitute "their" mountains for greed.

Fantastic and loads of respect to both of you guys. Magic climbing with the original means of keeping yourselves safe and equipment.

A good combo. Some long and leight weighted leader climbs first secured by some heavier really strong guy. The leader is not quite as strong but knows a lot about knots and finding good anchors an tying ladders and gadgeds to overcome the weight difference and securing the climb for the belayer.

Brilliant stuff. Don & Joe were only just being overtaken by the new generation of climbers when I started out but they were, and still are revered as legends. Even back then we were in awe of the sheer balls required to do some of their first ascents. Christ, I couldn't follow most of them a decade later. There's so many Whillans stories but my favourite is when he was climbing the Etive slabs - notorious for their lack of protection. Whillans got so far and realising he was heading for a very unpleasant, sandpapering slide, chose to turn around and RUN down the slab! What a man.

I'm going to have to say it: They don't make 'em like that anymore.

You know what the difference between English climbers of that time and USSR climbers??? USSR climbers was 18-27age and England climbers 45+.....you know why?, because only 1 percentage in USSR takes narcotics, and other Europeans and britishes young persons was hippie, they change climbing to narcos live!. That's why old school was climbing on the greasy rocks

Not knowing anything about climbing or safety like nowadays imagine having to guess everything to what would work and bodging everything to not die or be serious injured is what make people legends and pioneers of the sport just insane to really think of it .

I’m shocked any of the pre-modern British climbers survived more than a few years. They’d say it’s poor form to fall and they’re right! Very skilled indeed! 😂 No wonder they love using two ropes, Thank You for posting this!

This Border TV series was what got me into climbing in 1986 - in the Lake District. It changed my life. I found the challenge I think I'd been looking for, having been on the small side for contact sports. I've only got the Lakeland Rock video which is a truncated version of the series. Far too much of Pete Livesey p*ssing around trying to wind up Chris on Footless Crow. Has anyone got the full-length version of Chris and Bill Peascod on Eagle Front?

I don't get rope around the belly. You can make pretty good harnesses from just a rope. I love the conversations they have between pitches, hilarious. Cool video though, see how it was before.
