Just a proof of concept. This is me playing left-handed (as I normally do) and with no special hotkeys. With practice I think this could maybe be consistent and it could be made tighter with individual crew hotkeys if you REALLY practised.

Obviously this is modded for testing, not a real game. I think this is simply the AI wanting to stay together, but it's not a specific anti-boarding tactic I can recall using or seeing much. I have used it before but it's easy to forget about.

    How do you cheat in that much scrap..? That's probably twice what I get with the maximum number of jumps on medium without scrap recovery arm...

      Nvm, I see the fuel, missiles, and drone parts are cheated in too. Full HP on top to make it extra-sus.

    How does this setup fair during the run though, not against the flagship? My immediate gut reaction is that it seems too resource hungry to be sustainable. In later sectors you are very dependent on the Ion bomb hitting, since if it misses you're punished with a ~20 second wait before being able to try to do damage again, so it seems like you'd end up hacking piloting every time. So now you're spending a missile and a drone part each fight, maybe even a couple of missiles. Meanwhile, my instinct is that you're going to struggle to back up the ion attack with physical damage, because you'll need to get up to 5 power to run any other weapons, so against late game enemies against whom you need to put like 4 damage into their weapon system to keep them neutralized, I feel like you'd really struggle.

    Probably the best way to use this tactic over multiple volleys is starting O2 at 100% and just leaving it off. That gives you a timer for every volley. You can use the "arbitrary time" option at ftl-timing.mikehopley.org/ . The formula for volley N would be (8.1 * N) - 0.9, i.e. 7.2 seconds for the first volley, 15.3 for the second, etc. This will also work with different venting patterns as described in the app documentation. Without the shields buffer against this specific enemy, I now would NOT use the tactic, because blocking the Heavy Laser just opens you up to the Mini Beam hitting shields instead. If the Mini Beam is removed, I would use the tactic.

    Turns out you don't need to keep the drone "warm", you just need to let it fully recharge before depowering (a second or more). If you do that, it will store its charge until you turn it on. This makes the micro very clean. Thanks to mekloz for that.

    Scrap recovery arm is overrated. It's proven that it's unefficient if it was bought in mid sectors and risky in early sectors. Also it does take 1 augment slot, so don't buy it.

    9:52 honestly kinda wish the sheild drone did this instead; where it would surround the enemy ship and on it's intervals duplicate up to 5 times to reduce the chances of an enemy shot going off. also for it's design just if the 8 + 2 second formula wasn't so bad and just be like 8 seconds consistently or maybe just start at 6 seconds before ramping so you don't need to be frame perect againt heavy lasers with the stealth c. the design is so bad makes long battles easier but requires stalling with both cloaking and hacking to get full use a tool only useful duing in fight repairs. might as well just be an augment Phase Shift when cloak ends you have 2 super shield layers

    I think the shield thing needs an asterisk: Upgrade shields early IF you don't have zoltan shields. Zoltan always goes first, and engine with zoltan can make it so you don't need the shields at all.

      Yes, there are exceptions but I'm glossing over those in a beginners' guide. Other cases are Stealth cruisers, which don't have shields (weapons buffer for A & C, cloaking-3 for B) and Mantis B, which has two shields already (rush engines-3). I don't actually recommend engine upgrades on Zoltan ships before shield upgrades, that's not the most consistent play. Bad fights (drones, asteroids) will strip your ZS really fast and then you'll regret it. On Zoltan A I rush a weapons buffer then hoard, on Zoltan B I rush the *first* shield then hoard, and on Zoltan C I just hoard. I'll still make sure I have two shields for sector 3. Rock A is another example where I don't rush shields ASAP. On that ship I'm floating 18 scrap for stores, so I can buy a teleporter without selling Artemis. There's a lot of thought that goes into optimising early game strategy for different ships, and again that's not for a beginners' guide.     thanks to a rabbit-hole of research (and significant help + brainpower from kajelad), I can (annoyingly, maybe) point out that 29:56 to 30:04 (deleting 2 crew by ending the phase when they are sitting in Cloaking and Doors, and then the clarification that this doesn't work on hard) needs a small qualifier: on hard mode, any crew in Cloaking (or in the empty room between Cloaking and Hacking) at the end of P1 will survive, and will be deposited into the empty room between shields and lasers (empty room between Cloaking and Hacking will go to the empty room between shields and missiles) at the beginning of P2 any crew in the doors room at the end of P1 (even on Hard) will be deleted (or will die, whatever) in P2, the Drone Control room and the empty room between drones and the rest of the ship are "safe" -> they will be transported to the extra rooms flanking shields. the vertical empty room next to drone control (the one that is the mirror of Doors from P1) is "unsafe" -> any crew here at the end of P2 will die

    who would have thought that such a little game as FTL (it even feels like flash browser game sometimes) would have such in depth mechanics, tactics and variables. It blows my mind. I suck at this game so badly that I just scored only one victory on an Easy mode a couple of years ago and that`s it. I just can`t beat the damn thing (it`s not that i`m playing this game every evening. Just now and then when i`m in the mood for it) and now i`m starting to look for some guides and walkthroughs. This game also has an incredible community, everyone is super welcoming! Thanks, guys!

    I started playing FTL a couple days ago on easy mode, with advanced mode off, and on my first run I got to sector 8 (literally first try somehow), but lost to the mothership on the first phase. After a bit of trying, I could not get back to sector 8 whatsoever, and it took me like 4 attempts to even get to sector 6. After watching your video though and following all the tips (especially the keep upgrading all the systems all the time one), I got to sector 8 again. Not only that, but I almost won the fight against the mothership. I got past phase 1 and 2 very easily, but ended up dying to phase 3 from bad luck where literally every shot that hit my ship caused a breach + not having the manpower to deal with the large amounts of invading crew that destroyed pretty much everything in my ship + the low oxygen in my ship from all breaches caused a pretty brutal death in the end. Either way, absolutely loved the guide you made, it's pretty amazing and it helped me quite a bit. I think if I hadn't had gotten so unlucky with the breaches, I probably would've held on for slightly longer, and maybe would've won the fight (but that's pretty outlandish tbh). Thanks for the guide (P.S. the guide was so helpful, that even with like probably 8 hours total of gameplay, I still almost won)!

After that attempt that I mentioned, I tried to go for getting other ships or something for fun, and I had especially liked the Kestrel's B layout because of the 4 weapon slots, 4 starting crew and the quad basic laser setup (and also because it looks amazing). I ended up getting it after 2 runs each going for two separate achievements (those being United Federation and Tough Little Ship), and I started a run to test it out. Little did I know, that after a series of some pretty fortunate events (like finding a hull laser, burst laser II and 2 heavy laser I's, and having enough scrap to finally go for getting a stealth system), I was in a position to get an easy win. By the end of the game, I had 22 reactor slots, stealth 3, weapons up to level 6 and four shield bubbles. After like 5 minutes I had already beaten phase 1 and 2, and was waiting for the ship to come to me for phase 3, and I beat it after 3 minutes. The stealth system proved insanely useful, and I never understood why I had never bought it before in other runs, because using stealth (even at level 1) can just get you a free ticket through any of the power surge attacks the ship launches at you (including the horrifying one at phase 3, which I was only hit by once). I got around the crew attacks by simply targeting the teleporter and destroying it, and I had a mantis ready to handle the attacks if needed, and so I won the game, for the first time, with only a total of probably 15+ hours on the game. Anyways, thanks for the guide you made, it was pretty useful and informative (and helped a ton btw). Just wanted to share my first win here for some reason.

      It's definitely beneficial. The only thing I'd say is that it's far from necessary, so it really depends a lot on whether it affects your enjoyment of the game. People have gotten very big win streaks without doing crew training, for example.

    Advanced content is arguably easier, since you can just hack shields and easily destroy the rest. IMHO playing without advanced content is much harder (better).

    This video is proof that good weapons are honestly a bit overrated in FTL, what wins battles far more often is good systems. Of course, you do need *enough* weaponry to break through shielding...but the margin for that is not as demanding as some people think, and actually on the reasonable side given the choices in most games.

      Yep, you can get a lot done with systems and "good enough" weapons. This example is a bit extreme, but it makes the point IMO that Zoltan B doesn't need to rush an offensive upgrade and can just be safe by getting one shield online ASAP and 2 shields online by sector 3.

    You can avoid buying fuel if you think you can make it to sector 8 with your last few fuel because after that, you get all the fuel you will ever need. If enemy surrender you with 3 or more fuel, you may consider take it for the fuel. Keep in mind that you likely get a bit less scrap than just win the battle. If they surrender with an argument or a weapon, usually it’s a good idea to accept. Keep in mind that if you already have 3 arguments, the extra that is not be equipped will be left behind.

    D'ont froget something , PLAY ON EASY AT FIRST . If you do so 90 % of the time you will wreck the flag ship to dust pretty easily. ( I did so without sending any crews in ) . What he explains here its for nromal / hard + diffculities ^^

      No, this guide is specifically for beginners who are playing on Easy and still getting slapped down by the Flagship. I was playing on Easy here too, as you can see in the video. Some of this advice cannot be directly applied on Hard, due to the Flagship layout change.

    With regards to the engine thing, I sort of agree and disagree. Yes, you should prioritise shields, then weapons to pierce 3 shields yourself, but once you have that, you should definitely not neglect engines either, especially with how cheap engine upgrades are early on. 15 scrap for an extra 5% dodge, but also a faster FTL charge can help on the off chance you ever get caught by the rebel fleet. That higher dodge chance also means your pilot and engine man gain exp easier. I think around sector 2-4 is good time to get level 3 engines. You should definitely have at least level 4 engines by the end of sector 7 going into sector 8, but any more than level 5 is diminishing returns.

      I deliberately didn't over-specify when to upgrade engines as this is a beginners' guide. For really advanced play, then outside Mantis B there's little reason to upgrade engines before sector 3. Even then you might not, depending on your options. But engines-3 can be a good safety upgrade if your ship is a bit weak for the current sector.

      Thanks, but this isn't a real run, as you may be able to tell from my unspent scrap. Also upgrading broken systems doesn't help, they stay broken.
