Japanese Azaleas for Bonsai | Satsuki | Red | White | Purple | Kanuma Soil
Japanese Azaleas for Bonsai | Satsuki | Red | White | Purple
In this video I talk about 3 Japanese Azaleas I purchased from eBay in June 2024.
I questioned if they were Satsuki Azaleas, but nowhere on the eBay listing did it mention Satsuki.
It took me almost a month to repot them as shown in this video.
I actually recorded a full video of the work but I decided that a shorter version which you see here.
I mixed Kanuma soil with some composted bark and planted them in that instead of 100% Kanuma soil.
I'm delighted to say that each of the three 9cm pots held 2 plants. One small and one larger.
I separated the two plants, soaked the potting medium which looked like coconut coir before reporting...

    I'd keep them together & bind them with tape. I think as they grow the wire will cut in & reduce sap flow & growth. I'm guessing it will take a couple of years to fuse. But at least you'll have a chunky trunk.

    This could be very helpful. In the desert Southwest, USA, the intense heat and low humidity are definitely an issue. 100% kitty litter would probably dry out way too fast here, so I'm also trying to find the right mix for my area and the trees I hope to create into bonsai. Surely kitty litter has chemicals in?

    • @billsbonsai
      @billsbonsai 4 месяца назад

      To be honest, I don't know. However, if they were harmful, there would be a lot of sick cats and dead trees. I've grew some bonsai in 100% kitty litter and they have thrived. Water and feed is the key to surviving in kitty litter. Just don't let it freeze in winter. That's what killed my trees.

    • @bonsaimania5345
      @bonsaimania5345 4 месяца назад

      Usually, at least in the United States, kitty litter is made of clay granules or flakes. It shouldn't have any chemicals, as it is naturally occurring, unless it is contaminated in some other way (ie: ground contamination, dirty shipping containers, spills in the warehouse or store).

I'm home all day, so I can generally maintain regular watering during any hotspells to avoid inorganic mix drying out. Interesting you mention having so many trees die. I had mine in an inorganic mix and they were fine through the winter - just sat on the ground. Good video

I'm going to experiment with other mixes soon. Everyone has their take on what would be a good mix.
