Number two answer is 5. When a batter is at bat and does not commit the final out he is able to complete his at bat in the next inning. The same goes for balls, the maximum number of balls that can be thrown in at an at bat is 7.

What most people don’t talk about was his on base abilities. Dude was elite with a .400+ OBP. He was always on base. That’s a huge component in why he stole so many bases and is the MLB leader in runs scored. Also probably why Babe Ruth had so many runs scored as well.
