We are Kerry & Dorie, a keen amateur allotmenteer and a 9 year old miniature schnauzer living and growing in Leicestershire. We have a kitchen garden and (sort of) food forest front garden, which I started cultivating in 2021. In Dec 2022 we took on a full-size allotment plot and at the end of 2024 we moved to a new plot with a polytunnel.
Join us week by week as I try to figure out how to best 'grow your own' in the home garden and on the plot as a relative beginner. Expect plenty of planting, harvesting, composting and yapping - me and the dog! I also do a bit of cooking, fermenting, hiking, and foraging. Look out for my brother-in-law, Mark, who is my plot neighbour, as well as my cousin, Becky, who also has a plot on site.
For collabs/partnerships pls email.

Beginner's guide to planning a new allotment in 2025
A bit of fun this week - I'm hosting from a hot tub! 🙈 Yep, I did it last January too 😂 Every year in Jan, the girls in my family and I go on a lodge break for some R&R - but also to plan our plots! (Well, for my cousin and me, anyway.) As I'm planning a new plot this year, I thought I'd chat about some of the decisions I've been making and what you might consider if you're in the same boat - or in fact just looking for some motivation as we creep towards the start of the new season. The first job for me though is to actually uncover the plot and see what's under all of that black plastic!
In the video I discuss:

8 Seeds to Sow in January | UK Winter Garden & Allotment
Просмотров 11 тыс.День назад
There's not much you can do in the garden or on the plot when it is snowing outside, so I get out the seed folders and share the 8 seeds (plus a bonus) that I am sowing in January. This is the first video in a monthly seed sowing series for 2025. My hardiness zone 8b in Leicestershire in the UK - that's anywhere with a minimum average winter temperature of 15-20° fahrenheit and google tells me ...
Ep112: January Harvests & New Year Gardening Resolutions | HUGE Oca Haul
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.14 дней назад
In this week's vlog, I finally harvest the oca - I've been waiting for this for a long time - in fact, since harvesting and saving my own seed oca this time last year! It was chitted on the windowsill in early Spring and then went out towards the end of May, direct sown. The foliage was beautiful, it flowered, it died back in the cold. I cleared the foliage and mulched the bed at the end of Nov...

It's been a ridiculously massive job to move plots, but we're finally on the home stretch! EXACTLY two years since my first day on Plot 33, and I'm handing it back. It's bittersweet, of course - at this time of year, I'm reminded why I want to leave (watch all my slipping and sliding on the wet, muddy grass!!) but of course I've lots and lots of happy memories on the plot - and it was my very f...

Anyone else feeling a bit behind?? I didn't get any of my Autumn jobs done in November, what with the plot move happening, so the home garden needs a complete overhaul. I'm playing catch up but it really isn't too late - onions, shallots, garlic, spring bulbs - there is still time to get all of these in the ground in readiness for crops and flowers next year. The BIG move - round 2! Last week, Mark and I got so much done but there's still loads to move - including my arches, so I need to harvest the beans (and identify them!). I also need to harvest the cape gooseberries before they're killed off by the ice and snow that we are forecast. I grab some bits for dinner too inc. a lettuce, beetroot, kale, spinach and some little broccoli and cauliflower ...

Longing for it to warm up a bit so I can be outside pottering about in the garden. Thank you for sharing, bfn.🐞🌻🌱
I did a little pottering in the garden yesterday- got the last of those bulbs out! - but it was soooo cold! It's not much warmer today but I'm heading to the plot...
the turkish orange eggplant is quite bitter, just an fyi!
Oh no! I was hoping it wouldn't be... 😬
@@dogontheplot Jesse from plot 37 had also mentioned trying it in one of her last 2 vids, and mentioned about the bitterness - you should ask her for her thoughts :) It's one of the early wild eggplant varieties, so imo presumably evolved the bitterness to stop mammals from eating it perhaps. It's really cool to grow though, pretty! It may be quite thorny - I don't quite remember...
@ Nik @thatbritishhomestead seeming to think it was a good aubergine to grow... well, I guess I'll be finding out for myself this year! I'd going some other varieties too, so I won't be putting all my eggplants in one basket !
Sterling effort...
🤣🤗
Nicely planted I like your technique:)
Thank you 🤗
Enjoyed this video and shared it with another channel who I think could use the info. We buy compost by the cubic yard - $40. It needs to be aged for about 3 months or more because it is not quite ready when delivered. I suspect that yours is the same.
Had mixed results- last year got some much, much better stuff that I was very happy with.
Now on ep. 6. I enjoyed your show and tell. It is great that you have access to the rabbit poop. When im at home I’m in Ottawa, Canadá (transplanted Brit decades ago) and so there is no easily available manures. Interesting idea to store the paper outside in the rain. I did that last year nd as you say the tape came off very easily. Will continue going through your videos and I will go back and check that I have liked the ones that I have looked at (keep forgetting to that). Thank you for sharing your journey.
Bless you! Yes good tip for the cardboard. I'm still getting the rabbit poop from my colleague. I'm having second thoughts about adding it directly to the beds this year though - I think I'll try and compost it first to try and ensure the seeds in it don't germinate.
Congratulations on two years. It has been so inspiring and motivating to watch your channel! ❤❤❤
Aw thank you Debra. That's so nice to hear 🧡
Wonderful idea to have a yearly get together, especially in the winter months for a boost (may need to encourage my family to do this next year). Love the plans so far and the layout looks really good, so many different growing spaces.
Thank you Jenny. Yes it was a lovely little break 🧡
As a veganic gardener, I completely understand why you did this and the mixed feelings of remorse and excitement that you may be feeling. I try to have no-dig garden beds too due to wanting to protect the worms but we are blessed with sandy soil. Sometimes there are conscious decisions that we need to make to have productive gardens. We are on the survival food chain too but are cursed with consciences. 😘
Hi Lisa. Thank you for your comment - I really appreciate your support. That means a lot to me. We can only do our best and there are always compromises to be made, I agree. I try not to be too judgmental of myself or others. 💕
❤
Some great tips and ideas there Kerry , here's to a successful year on the plot . Consider leaving space for a second pitstop area ,sometimes it's nice to sit and view your handiwork from a different angle . Congrats on 4k subs.
Thank you George. Oh yes absolutely - big plans for the 'social space' - that will be on Mark's side at the back next to the shared shed.
What you will find is that there will be a bloom of weed seeds that will germinate when it warms up. You'll want to keep ontop of that in the first year and then it will be better in following years once that seed burden is reduced. Don't allow any weed to flower and go to seed as that will just perpetuate the problem. One flower can dump hundreds of seeds on the plot.
Absolutely! It's my plan - now that the cold snap is over - to cover the beds I'm not using back up. Mark rotavated the old plots just before Christmas and you can already see the weeds coming up everywhere. I'm going to try and keep on top of the weeds this year - I noticed this plot did get quite weedy towards the end of the summer before the last tenant dug it over and covered it up.
What a great place to be plot planning! 😄 If you need extra shading I drape debris netting over the outside of my greenhouse 😊
It was lovely Pammie - and so nice to have the sun shining. That's a good idea - it'll be interesting to see how the sun hits at the height of summer.
Hot tub? I’m not jealous, I’m not jealous. I’m honestly not! Gah I’m so jealous! 😂. I’m not normally a fan of rotavators either but oooh it looked lovely when you’d done. I’d say minimal disturbance describes my gardening style too, when I do dig I spend more time apologising to the chopped up worms than actually working! 😂. Congrats on 4k, well deserved!❤
🤣 it was a nice January treat! Yeh same - it looks so neat! - although now we've had the snow and rain it isn't so fluffy and looks kind of time same as it did 🤷♀️ I hope my worms are OK 🙏 Thank you Lindsay 🥂🤗
Has your No Dig club badge been rescinded 😂😂. But needs must as you say 👍👍. Looking forward to this new plot. Have a fab week planning, Ali 🌞🥶🥶🇨🇦
I think it might be 🙈🙈 I'm not sure it was so much needs must as heat of the moment ! 🤣 but what is done is done and it did look so nice and neat!!! Thank you Ali 🥰
Sorry I can’t help chuckle at your rotivating waddle 😂 Gosh you’re making me want to be sitting in a hot tub right now. Hope you had a lovely break and congrats on 4,000 subscribers 🥰🥰
🤣🤣 you got me back for laughing at your cardboard! Thank you Dora 🥰
Great way to start the year and plan out the new plot. When planning my plot I included a space for wildlife in the design, we aren’t allowed ponds but I’ve built a bug hotel, bird feeder, bird bath, and a few nest boxes. Will also plant out lots of flowers for pollinators in the wildlife area and scattered throughout the plot amongst the veggies.
Oh absolutely! I was thinking about a pond (I failed to finish the one I started to dig out on the old plot). There's a mini pond on mark's side. I've got some bug hotels up and when I get some perennials in they'll provide homes hopefully too. I definitely want more flowers this year. 🥰
Loved the vlog. Congratulations on all your new subscribers. You deserve it. ❤
Aw thank you Christine 🤗
Please don't shred leaves with a lawn mower. Leaves are the winter home of so many insects. Ladybirds, butterfly eggs, spiders, woodlice ( excellent for breaking down woody materials) worms and so many more. Shredding will kill them and their numbers are decreasing alarmingly so we need to preserve them .
Thank you for sharing Margaret. I like do my best for the insects. 👍
I totally agree. After Allotments the Greed and must have starts....
👍🤗
Looks like the perfect place to be in January. Impressed by your plan, very organized. But don't forget us that find chaos entertaining. 😉 I had this idea when I get a garden, that I wanted flower beds in different colours - all purple/blue in one, yellow/orange in one, the white bed, red bed and so on, and started making lists. I'm pretty sure I'll end up putting random things in where there is a spot. And allow wild flowers to do as they please. I heard someone say you should watch a garden a full year before making decisions. Guess it makes sense for big structures, I might watch it an hour. An allotment plot is totally something else, sounds like you have solid plans. ☺
Haha. Best laid plans and all... I'm sure chaos will ensue! I want the front beds to be a polyculture so lots of opportunity to shove things here there and everywhere! 🤣 thank you Trude 🥰
You know you're addicted to sowing seeds when you think "Oh no, I need more room ... I know, I'll empty the hot tub of water, fill it with topsoil and sow them in there!" I did once plant up an old metal bathtub with dahlias. It worked well for a few years until the bottom fell out. Which reminds me of the joke my dad used to tell me - If you unscrew your belly button, your bottom will fall off!
Haha I've heard that joke before 🤣 Well i do have the bathtub on the plot - I'd love to turn that into a living water container with pond plants in it...
cheers from your hot tub time machine lol your new plot is gonna be fab how lucky it was all dug over its nothing like the ones I saw a few years ago where it looked like the lotties time forgot and nature had reclaimed them lol it would have taken all year to clear them and probs no planting
Cheers Bev 🥂 Graham sent me a picture from when he took on the plot. I'll have to put it up in a video one day. It was a wilderness! He did an amazing job and I'm so so lucky to be benefiting from all his hard work 🥰
@@dogontheplot ye that would be good to see and it's a shame there is a waiting list of a few years then you get offered a plot that hasn't been touched for a few years it doesn't make sense to let them get that bad and then expect someone to take it on and say you need to sort it by a certain amount of months
@@thewitch69 couldn't agree more!
@@dogontheplot oh well i think at the mo i can just about manage my garden and i think a lottie would do me in lol
You seriously need a wood chipper😀
I'd love one!!
Sounds like you had a great time. Love the hot tub edition where you talk about your plans for the year. I don't see any harm in rotovating the new plot the first year, especially if you have clay. Will give it a bit of a chance to get some more organic matter in it. I don't think it is always a hard and fast rule and at the end of the day, it is your plot to do as you like. Congrats on 4k! Take care!
Thank you. We had a lovely time and yes - so long as it doesn't result in masses of weeds! - I think it was prob the right decision.
@@dogontheplot Will you still be using cardboard on the beds? You can cover them again until you need to plant in them to prevent the weeds from establishing? It might be weedy anyway first year if the previous guy had rotated it. At least it is nice and flat/even to work in.
Looks like a lovely place to have a getaway Kerry. Excellent tips for setting up an allotment. Rotators are so unweildly aren't they, they kind of take you for a walk 😂 It will be interesting to see how many weed seeds come up after you've rotavated, the soil did look lovely afterwards. Great update 😊
I could not work that machine Bethan - it was a beast! Yes, I'm concerned about the weed seed (they sprung up almost immediately after we rotavated the old plots, before handing them back!) - now that the weather has warmed up though I'll put the covers back on the beds I'm not planting into for a while (so most of them) and that will hopefully help. Do you think you will go in with a rotavator on your new plot?
@ no I’m going to put in wooden beds with lots of cardboard and hope it kills the grass. Normally I would dig out the weeds before putting down the beds but I don’t have time. I didn’t like using the rotivator, it was really hard to control and very noisy. Hopefully with your ground being covered and the cold, the weed seeds will stay away 🤞🏻
Such a lovely annual get together! 😀 Congrats again on the 4K, you make it look so easy...while drinking bubbly! 😂😂 Central path idea is great and also seeing you use pictures on the plan rather than just text. So much easier to visualise it. 💚🌿
Thank you Maiju. Yes, I like it with the little pics - I was just using the stock images on excel. Cheers to 2025 🥂
You should have no shame. I can't imagine how tiring it would have been to broadfork the whole plot. Also where are you going to sit to have tea?
Ah thank you Martha. I was expecting some backlash but none so far... Ah now good question! It is definitely the thing I missed saying! So the idea is that the back bit where the cardoons are will become the social area - but first we need to move the cardoons and pave it. I've told Mark it is a top priority! lol
Have no guilt in rototill of the garden to start. I used to rototill every year. Sometimes you just have to pick your battles and get going. Yes, there may be a few more weeds but a hula hoe/stir-up hoe will help with that. I agree minimal disturbance is the way to go because strict no dig just is not always possible. Congrats on the 4k! Love the idea of a lodge break with the girls. Looks like fun. I think it's so interesting how some love symmetry and others random. I'm a random gal. Here's to 2025. 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂
Aw thank you Robin. I'm not sure this was a 'needs must' situation - more of a heat of the moment decision! - but it saved a of broadforking and gave me that fresh plot/blank slate feeling! It was lots of fun and very relaxing. I can't seem to just sit and read anymore at home - I need to be away to properly relax! Ah I think in my heart I'm a random gal, but there's a part of me that wants to impose symmetry! lol Cheers Robin 🥂
Great vlog , im really looking forward to watching your new plot come to life , thank you for sharing
🥂 thank you Caroline 🥰
Cheers! I am going to have to rewatch this, as I was somewhat distracted by my mushroom burger...no really! I was sooo hungry! 🤣I totally want a hot tub cabin break, thats like my dream holiday...books, gardening, p&q, countryside and fizz! I love that you are going for symmetry ...another dream! 😊
Haha - I'd be distracted by a mushroom burger too! Yes, it's a perfect little break from the real world - highly recommended.
❤🧑🌾👍

I have my garden and my allotment plot as no dig, but I have recently taken on an additional plot wich is really overgrown. I therefore plan to dig over and weed the plot and then start my no dig plot. I haven't got the time for landscape fabric/ cardboard to get rid of the weeds so this. sadly, is the quickest, but by no means, the easiest was to achieve a cleared site in readiness for planting. I'm hoping all the micro, mini beasties and the worms and ground beetles will forgive me. It's a beautiful plot , you have. Happy growing 🙂
Sometimes needs must Be, for sure. I don't think I have excuse - I just got caught up in the heat of the moment! - but I absolutely think that sometimes you just need a blank canvas to start from. Are you excited to be extending into a new plot?
We all looked so intune with each other with the sped up move about - and the rotavator bit was just as funny/scary as I remember 😂 Great little break and thankyou for all your help- warning you now tho that no matter how much you teach me I will be asking many more questions this year (most of them daft ones I’m sure!!!) 😂 Oh and I hadn’t thought about room next to the greenhouse for water butts- so a bit more shifting for me to do!
Didn't we just! A well oiled machine. I know I've put the butt in place but now it blocks the path... so might have to use another slab and steal a bit of space out of one of the beds... Clare @thefarmyardgarden wanted to know if you were planning for your existing plot or a new one down near us... 🤣 I said, she ain't moving and she said but her name is BexMcmovesherplants! 🤣🤣
@ 😂😂 nope staying where I am can’t move all my slabs to the west wing!!!! But yes I will plant a plant, then move said plant 🌱

So went to the beginning and will start to watch from there. It’s 15 Jan 2025. Nice intro and overview. The previous plot holder seems to have done a very nice job of maintaining the plot. Pretty rare in my experience - you are (were) very lucky😊
Oh you are brave!! Yes, I've been very lucky with both plots being left in excellent condition. You will come to see with the original plot that I did not leave it in quite so nice a condition as it was handed over to me... but I did my best 🙈

Not sure if you’re aware that the. Potty mouth garden are looking for a new female contributor to join. It’s the big leagues but you would be very good on it Kerry..
Funny, someone just told me that today. Thank you for the vote of confidence Tony! 🤗
Very nice video. I will be looking back at your catalogue. I have watched a few (haphazard) in the past but I do find your videos kind of compelling. Lots of useful info even for a gardener of more than 40 years. Thank you for putting this material for all to see. Our season in Ottawa, Canada doesn’t start until April and right now I am in Spain literally sunning it up for a while :). Take care.

I hope that you have a nice January break. The allotment plan looks great. You have to make the plot yours and put the path ways where you want them to be.
Absolutely - I'm beginning to think the old plot never really did feel MINE. ..
Wow! Kerry, your new plot is amazing, i don't blame you for rotavating, that would have been a big space to broadfork. Love your new designs, and your genuine excitement for the growing year is infectious. I'm off to do some planning. Thankyou.👍❤❤🐕
Thank you Wendy. It would have taken a few sessions to broadfork - not too bad, but much longer than the rotavator (esp when Mark took over lol). Happy planning!!! 🤗
I would build a garden shed and have it dual up as a potting shed with a polycarbonate roofing for light, I want to build more compost bins but want to have a hot bed joing them and have a cold frame on top.
Oooh I love the idea of having a polycarb roof. To be honest though, the existing greenhouse is all shelved so that'll prob be the best place for seedlings - and even saying that in practice I'll prob have all my seedlings in the home greenhouse where I can keep a close eye on them... Maybe I'm spoilt for space!!! I don't know if I'll do a hot bed this year... I did one the last two years (a fail and then an ok one) - I didn't find I really needed it tbh - but I do like the idea of them!
Goodluck for the new plot tfs sylvi
