    Such a gem playlist. Other courses didnt cover everything and i couldnt follow them completely, felt really discouraged. With your course i can follow along and feel confident already.     Where you showed rotating the wood grain ... Do we have to type in a value (which seems very trial and error) or is there a widget to spin that shows us real-time how some characteristic (like grain) is rotating?

      @@FotomakerAcademy For Viewer, there is just the numeric values at this time. If you are looking for more detailed controls, I would recommend checking out Substance Painter.

    Thanks for this video. Do you have any videos or suggestions for working with materials with alpha channels? I have an alpha channel mateiral on a mesh in VisionOS which I converted from blender to work with composer pro. I am having a lot of issues with the vision pro properly occluding things behind meshes that are semitransparent.

      Yes. Unfortunately, I don't think the Apple Metal renderer can handle transparency maps in a shadow caster. That type of calculation usually takes place in a raytrace renderer or more advanced renderer and Apple appears to be prioritizing keeping everything in a real time experience (as they should :)

      They are similar. Same foundation as basic UI. Stager just has more features and a better renderer. Dimension is usually good for hobbyists or people just looking to play in 3D. Stager is just that next step up for professional use.

    Finally set aside time to properly learn Substance Painter after kind've haphazardly using it for about 10-15 models to get a feel, and my god I can't understate how much I agree with the importance of "make a new layer, add a mask, do something to the mask". I don't think I've used a raw, unmasked paint or fill layer more than a handful of times!

    Thanks Mike! Being laid off about six months ago has been rough but one thing I keep close is hard times don't last forever. Being helpful and empathetic to others is also really important. After all we're all trying to do the same thing at the end of the day; we want to keep our families warm, fed and safe.       @@fef-s2f 2 things. 1. Make sure the transulcency map is properly plugged in. 2. Also consider exporting an SBSAR out of Painter and use the Substance to Blender plugin www.adobe.com/products/substance3d/plugins/substance-in-blender.html

      No yet! But that is definitely in the feature requests. And hopefully it will be like stager where you can add Photoshop files and Illustrator files with Artboards directly to the model.

    does splitting the mesh into two texture sets increase draw calls in a game engine?

      It shouldn't because all you are doing is breaking it up into different chunks for your Painter workflow. Once it comes into the game engine, it will still just be one 0-1 UV map

      ​@@michaeltanzillo I just did a little investigating. Having two texture sets means substance will export 2x albedo, 2x metallic etc.. in game engine, 2 materials need to be created for each texture set, so more draw calls.

      Where is the problem occuring for you? 1. Download the model 2. Open Substance Painter 3. File -> New 4. Load the Model in the file line 5. Click Ok I just tried it on my end and that works well.

      @@Mayannaise4 Take a look at your shader settings. It's on the far-right side of the interface. The second icon down. It looks like a sphere with a little gear icon on it. Click that and look at the box right under Undo & Redo. It should say a type of shader there. If it doesn't say "asm-metal-rough" click that box and change it to the asm-metal-rough shader. Then you should be able to access it all!

      It's odd...the latest version of Painter does it with some elements but not with others. I would try dragging an arrow onto the model just to get that dialog box. Make your selection. Then switch out the map with what you want. It's a janky solution for now but will report to the team

      Make sure you have the latest version of Painter installed. Then make sure you have your shader set to something like asm-metal-rough. To find that setting, click the shader settings icon on the far right part of the screen (the sphere with the gear icon.) Then change the shader type at the top to asm-metal-rough. This type of shader supports translucency and you should be good.

      You're right! Playing with it now and it's working for some elements but not others. Going to report a bug but it looks like it's working fine with SBSARs, PNGs, and JPEGs but it doesn't work with vector files or PSDs (which is what the logos are now). Will report to the team. Thank you!

    Was trying to use the BallMan model that you have a link to and in Painter I get "Failed to load 3D scene. Loading failed". I went to File-->New-->Select-->OK and no dice. I imported it into Stager with no problems. Then to test I exported from Stager and then tried to import that into Painter but sill no luck. Any advice? Thanks Michael.

      OK. I got it to open in Painter. I just had to uncheck "Use UV tile workflow". Does that sound right?

      @@marcchapuis55 You can also try going to File -> Open Sample -> MeetMat.spp . It should be loaded there by default

    Michael-Is there any way to add water droplets to say a cylinder that are cascading down the face of it. Not the splash effect that would surround it but to the surface of a cylindrical package within Stager itself? Is that more a job for painter? Thanks!

      There is Substance Material with drips I use a lot substance3d.adobe.com/assets/allassets/e0a6630beeb2abb203da25c8b9e2ba1d4e66ddee?q=car%20paint&sort=-searchScore But you are limited by what you can do with it in Stager. I generally use that one in Painter and isolate just the normal map so I can keep my regular package design underneath it

    Did they get rid of ENVIRONMENT STAGES since this video was published? I only see ENVIRONMENT LIGHTS which I see in your UI as well. I'm in version 3.03. Thanks Michael. Good tutorial!

      Thanks so much! They did remove them. BUT they added templates to the latest releases. You can find those on the welcome screen when you launch the software.

    Michael, thanks very much for this course. I've just finished all the videos in the series and this is the most enjoyable program course I've taken. It's extremely well explained, well paced and well planned out. I've also noticed all the extra effort you've taken in replying to people who've had questions. Fantastic work. I'm looking forward to taking more of your courses and seeing what else you put out in future.

    For anyone who might have a later version of Painter and is confused as to why you can't find the materials Michael is mentioning here; they removed them from the library to 'streamline Painter' which is pretty annoying. You'll need to head over to their online asset library and download them manually. They are free to subscribers at least, but it is an extra process unfortunately.
