      @@ChasetheWildNZ I think the issue for most is the surprised sounding sentence after the shot “Ah, a bloody wallaby, oh well, it’s dead now”. At any rate, anything on the internet will be put under the microscope and people will judge as they see fit. If you know you are in the right I shouldn't worry about it too much. If you were in the wrong, learn from it :)

    • @ChasetheWildNZ
      @ChasetheWildNZ 16 дней назад

      @aliceduser6347 good advice for sure. I think the surprise bit was because I was hoping it was a pig or the nanny tahr I'd seen in that area 20 mins before.. Yes people certainly jump to conclusions and editing changes the sequence of things.. don't think ppl want to watch the 5 mins of the camera focusing on the snow while I watched the wallaby and waited for the nanny tahr to show itself.. in the end the 5cm on snow on me made my patience wear thin! Wallaby meat is as good as tahr in sausages sometimes!

I have shot the factory Hornady ELDM 180s in 2 other 7PRCs at around 2850 to 2900 fps. There is no instant knock down for big game. If you drop them in their tracks, you made a bad shot and got lucky with a central nervous system hit (spine, brain) or broke the front shoulder on a deer (won't work on an elk). We should all be aiming for the lungs which give the greatest room for error. If you hit them perfectly and double lung them (even with a 50 BMG), you should expect them to run and die within 30 seconds. Knock down power is a myth. Accuracy is key.

    • @ChasetheWildNZ
      @ChasetheWildNZ 20 дней назад

      Accuracy is certainly key.. and knock down power, as in (knocking them off their feet) is indeed not what happens, however. Using a larger bullet with good speed and designed to create a huge wound channel at the impact speed, gives you a better margin of error than smaller cartridges. Certainly a spine shot is usually the reason for an instant drop in an animal and you do see that a lot in some videos. Also you are right that an instant drop if the result of destroying or overwhelming the CNS. However there is a large bunch of nerves within the CNS that is just above the heart and lung junction. On an animal this is slightly forward of the leg.. (on the outline) when I destroy the shoulder with a good bullet. That's my target.. and it drops them very well. I have dropped wild cattle in the same way. This isn't a base of the neck shot.. but still within the chest cavity. Destroying both shoulders doesn't make them drop from the structural support damage. It's a huge CNS overload/destroying it. I have seen this 1000s of times and is very well documented by www.ballisticstudies.com

    • @ChasetheWildNZ

      @varmint223 the L35 had the lower resolution sensor. 384 vs 640. Aldo the base magnification is higher with the L35. The rest is pretty similar. I'd recommend going for the 640 res sensor every day if you can save your pennies. I know a sale or two will be coming up in NZ nearer the roar. The L35 higher base mag means it's more suited for glassing hills and slopes 300m + away from you and less useful up close for wallaby and rabbits etc. T Just a smaller field of view of that makes sense

      @effapisa4873 here we have no predators and all mammals are introduced. They need control or our native plants and environment suffer hugely. Currently our government is running a national competition to cull goats and they spend millions every year on poisons. Sadly it's the reality of some countries

      @@ChasetheWildNZ Culling is not hunting. To get your British Army Sniper badge, you have to cross at least 1600 metres unseen by the strategically placed observers, if you are seen at any point up until an observer, who is summoned to the shooter by the shooter by commands giving distance and directions is able to touch the shooter, whose shot had to be under 400 metres, is able to touch the shooter . At the point where the observer summoned to the shooter is standing by the shooter and can touch him the summoned observer asks the other observer if any can see the shooter ,if so the shooter fails. The summoned observer asks the same of all the other observers each time the shooter gives the summoned observer directions to him. So effectively trained qualified snipers have been taught an essential element of hunting, moving about but being unseen by numerous sets of eyes.

      @jamescrydeman540 I thought it was under 200m they had to get here. I believe it's 200m here in Nz. I have a few mates who have passed that and were snipers back in the day.

      @@ChasetheWildNZ The friend with the snipers badge said in Britain you start out in a valley with observers posted all round and through it, you start 2000 metres from the target and are not allowed to shoot until you have passed 1600 mteres, you can go further if you wish, It’s more about the concealment than the marksmanship, though by this stage of your military development and with your interest in the snipers badge your marksmanship is probably up there anyway.

    • @ChasetheWildNZ
      @ChasetheWildNZ 2 месяца назад

      @jamescrydeman540 yes it's all about concealment and observations. I think they then have to back out and be unseen after their shot too! Sadly their factory ammo let's them down a bit on the shooting front. We have competed against the NZ team in a civilian long range and hunting competition out to 2kms and their ammo wasn't doing them favour's with ES of over 70fps reliable hits out far aren't really possible

      @sharlenejukes117 he is a lucky man if you are scope shopping for him!! I often use 15-20 power for the longer shots. You can't go wrong with the SFP helix HDLR 2-16 power. Bloody good scope as an all rounder. Great for the price too.

    Good to see you knocking over the hoppers. I’m running the same cartridge and projectile. Considering the similarities between his cartridge and the .243 Win, it’s amazing how much more effective the 108gr is with the high BC. I’m shooting goats at double the range I would use my old .243 with a classic softpoint like the Sierra GameKing. The 6mm CM ballistics are in a different league. Fast twist rules… my barrel is 1:7”.

      @@ChasetheWildNZ I bought myself a new Tikka Aspire in 243Win for my 70th, at the time I was unaware that a 1 in 8 twist was coming out and ended up with the 1 in 10 😭. I found the ELD-X in 90grn worked well, but it doesn't like anything over 100grn. Over the last years I have taken two fallow at 350yds & 375yds and one red at 355yds, all clean shots. My limit is 400yds on deer and 600yds on goats and Wallabies, I shoot nowhere near as good as Jake. Good morning, Jake what a great way to start my day, watching you and your mate knock over a few wallabies. I totally agree with you regarding using a thermal spotter. I have been using one for a year, mainly on possums when I'm not seeing their eye shine; the only difference is the one I have has a built-in rangefinder which helps immensely especially in the dark. I've just shot two at 4am in front of my home😁. Love your work and thanks for sharing.
