Pioneer Species bringing the dead back to life! WHAT ARE PIONEER SPECIES?
In today's video, we look at what it takes to bring an environment back to life. We cover pioneer species, what they are, how they grow, and why they grow the way they do. How can you spot a pioneer species and what are they doing?
Planting in a natural way is a great way to help support your local pollinators, which in turn helps support the rest of the food web. Welcoming some natural plants into your garden will help wildlife and the soil your horticultural plants rely on.
Here we look at how to identify pioneer species, so let me know in the comments which your favourite pioneer species is. Also, what would you wish for?

Coevolution explained. What is coevolution?
Просмотров 322 месяца назад
In today's video, we look at coevolution. What species are involved in coevolution and why is it relevant? We see coevolution in the wild where one or more species affects another species' evolution. They then evolve together. This is often seen in parasitic relationships, but it is seen in mutualistic relationships too. In this video, we explore both parasitic and mutualistic coevolution. We d...
NEW ANIMAL FOUND. Why are we still discovering new animals?

In today's video, we look at an amazing new discovery. A new animal has been found in the forests of Vietnam, but why didn't we know it existed? What is leading us to discover new animals? Surely we have discovered all there is to discover? Well, the answer to that is NO! There are new zoological discoveries all the time, and it is a super exciting time to get in to zoology or biology. In today's video, we look at a science report I came across recently that is shockingly terrible! As a research scientist, I am interested in the issue of microplastics in our environment and how they affect us and the planet. This report claims boiling water can remove 90% of the microplastics from the water. This is amazing, if it is that simple to remove microplastics, then this could have s...

Caterpillars are INVADING!! How to cicadas affect caterpillars?
Просмотров 253 месяца назад
In today's video, we look at the effects of cicada emergence on caterpillar numbers, and what impact this has on the wider community. Changing one thing in an ecosystem can have a huge impact on wildlife, but we do not usually see this impact. However; when cicadas emerge every 13 to 17 years, we know the devastation the introduction of a new species can have on the ecosystem. In this story fro...

Humans are making pigs sick. How are we transmitting swine flu?
Просмотров 33 месяца назад
In today's video we look at another story from the New Scientist, this one is dated August 2023. It is a fascinating look at swine flu cases and how humans are responsible for spreading more flu between pigs than pigs spread to humans. In a world of mass animal production, are we now starting to see humans creating and spreading more diseases than ever before? With knowledge from genetics and m...

Making Magic Eggs. The best way to avoid a cuckoo attack
Просмотров 1224 месяца назад
In today's video, we look at the issue with brood parasitism, and what one bird is doing to fight back. Raising chicks is energetically expensive for the parent, so giving up parental responsibility is one way the cuckoo avoids this cost. Parent of year away certainly going to the cuckoo! They lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and allow other, often much smaller, birds to raise their c...
Can worms eat plastic? The problem with microplastics.

In today's video, we look at the issues with microplastics and how this is affecting the soil ecosystem. Worms are ecosystem engineers of the soil and perform essential roles in nutrient transfer, soil architecture, and soil aeration. Soil is a finite resource that we take for granted, but it is facing a huge problem. A problem we created and we need to fix somehow. Have you noticed changes in ...

middleton lakes is very nice with lots to see, good video 👍👍
@johnpenney1547 thank you for taking the time to comment. It is a beautiful place and loads of different wildlife
Hey, im starting Zoology part-time at Derby this sept! Im 36, and this has been helpful. Thank you.
first
Thanks for being here, I hope you enjoyed the video
Can't hear anything.
There is volume on the video, I agree it appears quiet in post production.
I did my best to remove plastic from my food, with eating mostly whole foods. I avoid water stored in plastic. Plastic = poopoo
@Alimem54 that is amazing, removing your plastic waste is not easy so hats off to you. Its all we can be really is personally responsible, we cannot controll countries!
👍🏼look into mycology for transmuting microplastics. I would be interested in that. Tks
@nancysdsk thank you for the suggestion. I am interested in the use of mycology for solving issues. My recent research focused on mycology as biofertilser. I'll do a video on bioremediation and mycology
Flathead worms are good or not?
@nancysdsk flathead worms, also known as hammerhead worms, originated in Asia and have travelled to Europe. They are predators of earthworms and likely uptake microplastics due to predation. These worms are toxic and not encouraged to be touched by humans. The latest research seems to be focusing on their spread and genetics to determine subspecies. I couldn't find anything on the microplastic issue with the species you have mentioned. Hope that helps
its definitely a thing i have noticed, there are less and less worms nowadays. 25 years ago i used to help my nan in the garden, and now in other spaces there are just less and less, which is so sad. i thoroughly enjoyed this video, some great information you shared here. we definitely need to find alternatives to certain plastic types - mostly food/single use. no info shocks me anymore, but it does make me so sad, for sure.
@Calvin.The.Unfindable thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I have certainly noticed less worms and many microplatsic when soil sampling. We need to find solutions, but it is a scary problem
@@kellyzoology it is a very scary problem. i always live in hope that we can find solutions for all these kinds of problems. i know for myself i find it so frustrating that there is so much loss... but i know we can get it sorted if we all pull together to find solutions.
@Calvin.The.Unfindable absolutely, I agree with you. I am concerned there are people who do not care or are unwilling to believe the evidence of the problems humans have caused. But, we have to work together as you say to find effective solutions
@@kellyzoology absolutely, it is concerning the amount who don't care, but we are an increasing number who do care - and with education more will stand with us :)
@Calvin.The.Unfindable I couldn't agree more. That is the whole aim of my channel to provide people with zoological and biological knowledge. With knowledge comes power. So glad you are passionate about this topic.
You Tube dont feed me this glabal warming propaganda.
This is not propaganda, it is a science story. How lizards behaviour changes when they're hot
Thanks for the video, I got a half plot a few days ago, it's essentially a bare 25msq, far drier than what you have. Bit clueless about how to proceed especially with the hottest months on the way, but resolved nevertheless. Wish me luck
We can be clueless together and make a load of mistakes but have fun along the way. All the best of luck for your allotment
Look at no dig growing huni d
It's coming on amazingly!! 👏👏👏
Where do these creatures have their babies.
Poaching is a big problem!
I do agree with you. It is a shame current education programmes are not having the desired effect on communities still poaching. The second issue with poaching is people prepared to buy the slaughtered animals!
Inbreeding.... Me now seeing every White Rhino as a member of the Habsburgs 😅 Seriously though this story is really sad, I thought White Rhinos were safe now, but there are only 2 female Northern White Rhinos left and the Southern White Rhinos don't have enough genetic diversity to sustain a healthy population if they manage to survive the aggressive poaching and hunting?
They reckon animals can't detect trail cams I beg to differ as they clearly do.
U only have one trailcam?. U need at least two more cameras or ur wasting your time everyone is saying. It's happened so often when the cameras were moved to look in a different position. 😳
I have 5 cameras. I had 3 at the time of this video, but the area I was observing was small so decided to only use 1. For my latest video I have used 3.
No problem. Just saying 😌
@giuseppemartino6889 no problem at all, you're absolutely right. Always best to use more than one. 2 of mine are not very good. So, I've brought new ones 😊
Thank you for sharing, Ms Kelly!
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope you enjoyed it 😊
Jack Horner is reverse engineering birds back in to dinosaurs 🦕
What?! That's an interesting concept, as they are the surviving relatives. I'll check that out. Thank you 😊
I have a little bio lab of my own at home
That's amazing! Very jealous. I have been tempted to set one up.
Could use Is environmental dna to find Bigfoot. I've been saying this for years!!! Is he real or not??? This will prove yes or no
Thankyou for sharing.
I always thought DNA broke down after like 7000 years.... so even if we had a dino specimen it would be too old to use the sequence anyway....
DNA is a fragile molecule, but can be found in large quantities. Although it starts to degrade after 48 hours, it will be preserved for a long time if conditions support it. Thank you for the comment. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
@kellyzoology thank YOU for responding. I love you learn! I really think I should have went into evolutionary biology instead of nursing. Lol. It is so amazing! Hope to see more videos like this from you!
@angelafisher5726 thank you. I am sure your degree was so interesting and I bet you've had so many cool experiences. I'll certainly put out more molecular videos and DNA related stuff 😊
I appreciate the clarity in your (science) explanations! Environmental DNA new info for me. By the way, dodo would be my choice too … these presentations would be excellent lectures in any educational setting.
That is such a lovely comment. I really appreciate that. I want to communicate science and hope it provides clarity on challenging topics. A dodo would be SO amazing!! Glad there is a fellow dodo fan!
Very cool to see what’s near your house. Cool looking deer!
Nice to have some a lil diff❤
I was more interested in what was going on in the background on the right. Do you ever get any larger animals or hear any strange sounds?
Thank you for commenting. In the UK we have red deer, but they are not around the area this video was taken. The largest around this location is probably the muntjac. I have considered looking for the big cats though using my cameras
Seeing a Muntjac dear always gets me excited , nice one 😊
Thank you for the comment. Yes, I have to admit, I love seeing them too. In my other video, in the quarry, the female comes out in the day. So lovely
@@kellyzoology I was standing in a church carpark one afternoon and one ran past me , at first I thought it was a dog until I got a second look ,it was panicking because of some noisy kids .
@@bobbyboko6317 how amazing you saw one! They're so secretive, I've only managed to see them on camera. Shame it was stressed because of the noise
Some animals can see infrared light emitted from the video camera
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I did wonder if some animals could detect it. I have photos of a fox checking the camera out quizzically.
Thank you. I’ve just discovered your channel. And hello Miley!
Hi, thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. Miley says Hi 👋 💓
That was a cool looking but donr recognize the breed.
Is that breed of cat? I have 3 ragdolls, 2 appeared in this video and my black cat is a domestic short-hair.
Your cats are so sweet!
Thank you so much. I do love my cats, but they are greedy! 😊
Living in the US, Grey Squirrels are native (in the central and eastern portions) and important to forest ecology/regeneration. I was aware that they have become quite a problem in the UK and continental Europe, esp for your native Red Squirrel species. [We also have a red squirrel species, seen mostly in coniferous forests/mountains] I had no idea about the Muntjac Deer, though !
Yes absolutely, thank you so much for the informative comment. It is so interesting to understand local and global wildlife differences. The red Squirrel is native to England and was out competed by the grey. But reds are breeding, and hopefully will begin to regain territory.
The Grey Squirrels brought in Squirrel Pox Virus Disease therefore decimating a lot of the Reds. A fatal mistake by the Victorians in Introducing them.
Where is this? I don’t recognize some animals.
It is in the UK. If you watch my newest video on 'What lives in the quarry', I go into more detail on UK wildlife. If you're interested.
@@kellyzoology which island?

Thank you, they are cheeky!
Nice job Kelley, this is so calming watching the critters of the forest. Especially during these stressful times. Thank you again.
Thats perfect, exactly what I was hoping it would do. Thank you for commenting
Also, I have another question: Do you believe in bigfoot?
I like to keep an open mind when it comes to cryptology. I think there is some interesting evidence to support there are creatures we don't understand. I'd like to go out and try to find one. What about you?
@@kellyzoology Yes, I believe in the evidence that has been presented to the public.
Awesome video! Do you have a bachelor or masters degree?
Thank you. I have a batchelors degree, but considering a PhD. I'm currently considering funding route.
