Holdsworth: Murder on the Mountain
A quick trip up to Powell Hut to try and find the site of the Tararua's most infamous murder. An unsuccessful trip, partly due to the sketchy details available on the web and the size of the area where it could possibly have occurred.
As an aside, I got literally sidetracked on a trail that appeared to be going somewhere interesting. For a brief time, it looked like it might be heading toward McGregor Falls but after a while the trajectory did seem a bit too high for that.

Carterton: Kaipaitangata Recce (Sayer Pack Track & Waiohine Ridge Track)
Просмотров 16114 дней назад
The plan was to find and walk the old pack route to Totara Flats from Dalefield. The route features in Tararua Footprints and at least one online blog. Unfortunately, in the mean time, and unknown to me, access to the Dalefield end has been cut off. Tried an old 4wd track from Mt Dick Road that headed in the right direction but that was a sea of gorse. With that failure, decided to check out th...
Featherston: Is Boar Bush Gully Road a Remnant of Something Longer?
Просмотров 445Месяц назад
Old maps show Boar Bush Gully Road winding (not windling) and sidling over the hills between Featherston and the Tauwharenikau River. In my wanderings in recent years, I've found that both ends of the road as per the old map, are covered in very unattractive vegetation (blackberry, gorse and tight scrub). A very old memory of Finis saddle was that it was more open and explorable. This turned ou...
Levin: Panatewaewae Stream Loop
Просмотров 823Месяц назад
A while back I came across a distinct track heading up Panatewaewae Stream (see Levin: North Manakau Recce). It seemed like a good idea to revisit the track and see where it ended up. The track crossed and recrossed the stream and passed through a number of grassy clearings. It seemed to peter out at a clearing roughly three km upstream. There were indications that there may be a faint trail co...
Wainuiomata: Goat Stream Loop
Просмотров 290Месяц назад
Apologies for the blurred spot. The lens cover picked up a scratch. There is a route to the Remutaka main range from Goat Stream. It's a well-marked trapper's trail but I didn't really bond with it. Pushed on above the Goat Stream headwaters and got a nice view over the river valley. On the return followed a different spur to the true left of an unnamed stream. This was quite well formed to abo...

Acknowledgements: Hutbagger.com for the photos also Wairarapa Archive Collection, Cluanbeag, David Harrington, Derrick Field & Charlie Ledbrook. The junction of Smiths Creek and the Tauwherenikau River has been a busy place for a long while. Six huts and shelters have been built close to the confluence over the last 120 years. Only one remains. There are also a number of clearings. Perhaps a le...
Masterton: Bag Dagg!
Просмотров 1532 месяца назад
Acknowledge Tramper and Hutbagger.co.nz for the photo of Mt Dagg Hut. This wasn't an unenjoyable walk despite the blackberry and scrub. A tolerance for close contact with various scratchy shrubs is required though. There is a badly overgrown farm track the whole way. On the climb from the stream to the summit you need to pay close attention to any change in direction. The clearer bulldozed trac...
Waikanae: The True Maymorn Junction & Was There an Earlier Waiotauru Road?
Просмотров 7992 месяца назад
Maymorn Junction is a little confusing. There is an obvious junction close by .822, yet the map label is noticeably to the east of this point. Old maps clarify the situation. On paper at least, the Junction was the crossing of a road starting close to Pakuratahi Forks and ending at Hautere, and a road from Renata Peak that ended close by Akatarawa Saddle. The present day Waiotauru Road was buil...
Upper Hutt: The Complete Tane's Track & Looking for the Never Built Cross Creek Tunnel's Survey Line
Просмотров 2352 месяца назад
Tane's Track has shrunk over the last twenty years. It used to link up with Mt Climie Road. The section unmarked on any contemporary maps is still there though. The second plan for the day was to find the survey line cut in 1939 for a proposed railway tunnel between Maymorn and Cross Creek. The tunnel ended up going to Pigeon Bush instead, yet the cut line stayed on maps until at least 1979. I ...
Otaki Forks: Corrigan Mill Sites & Waitatapia Bush Tramway
Просмотров 1702 месяца назад
The Corrigan Mills were around from 1930 to 1936 and operated a bush tramway up to Saddle Creek. The infamous 1936 storm damaged some of its infrastructure, and the company was wound up in 1939. There's not much left of the operation: a few cleared areas and the odd but of rusting iron. The remains of a hauler and boiler are further up the valley but didn't really have the time to have a look t...
Wainuiomata: Turere Recce
Просмотров 2053 месяца назад
It might not have been the best idea to try to view a waterfall on an afternoon when 50 mm odd of rain gets dumped in your vicinity. Still, it might have worked if I'd found a trail down to the Turere Falls, but the options ended up being a bash through sodden bush or a wade down a flooded stream. Neither appealed. So, the day turned out to be a wander along the Whakanui Track that was mostly s...
Otaki Forks: Searching for the Te Moe Moe Hut Site.
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
Despite its position being clearly marked on a topomap, finding Te Moe Moe Hut is a difficult proposition. It was small and timber slab, so it didn't leave much of footprint. It's been gone for 60 years, so any remains may be buried under the crown fern that provides abundant ground cover. I found a few flat spaces in the general area but no evidence solid enough to claim a discovery. There wer...
Corner Creek, Emerald Anchor, Haris Falls, Sesqui, Hinakitaka Reserve, Lost Memorial & Black Whare.
Просмотров 806 месяцев назад
A bout of cabin fever got me out into the wilderness, but a stitched-up leg limited my options. The Mukamuka Stream is a fascinating place and the mention of a memorial to a hunter that has not been seen for a while, was a strong draw. Old trip reports mention trampers bumping into the hunter's family sitting by the marker, lending an almost supernatural poignancy to the lost memorial and I had...
Old Otaki Forks: Forks Swing Bridge Site, Judd's Hut Site and the Remains of Penn Creek Track.

Ended up with a free afternoon in Otaki, so headed out to Otaki Forks with a list of historic features to find. Started by trying to find the remains of the original Forks swing bridge. Any tangible evidence of the bridge or nearby Judd's Hut had been washed away or hidden under long gr...
Upper Hutt: Mt Climie via Sidewinder
Просмотров 997 месяцев назад
Two of my previous videos have Climie in the title, but I never got to the main peak! This time the main peak is achieved over a less travelled route. Sidewinder is a forestry road that follows a spur up to the 500 metre contour. This is followed by a wide band of scrub, then a lot of mossy beech. Hard to believe but the scrub is better travel than the beech forest. The return was down a spur f...

Greytown: Centre of Zealandia, the Submerged Continent
The defence case that a pair of hitmen stalked the two men along the bush is such wild and fantastical thinking. Awesome video - really eerie. I reckon you're on to it with that track into the beech forest, looks a logical access point to someone like Haanstra who wasn't an outdoorsman or particularly clever, and it makes sense for a hunter to go that way. I notice that track every time I'm up there.
Thanks. Everything about the case is hard to believe including the verdict.
@@mapalone Absolutely, it reads like salacious fiction. At least he's in jail in NL now.
Yes! You have delivered the goods sir. Outstanding work.
NIce video! Thanks for sharing it. You didn't take a wee side trip from the back of Mountain House Shelter to bag Pig Flat Hut?
No. Was under a little time pressure as I found an interesting trail along the 1200m contour. Thought maybe it would lead to McGregor Falls, then thought no, it's staying too high, but after a closer look on the map, not so sure either way. Have a planned walk where I might check out Pig Flat Hut.
nice :)
I've seen a few of these types of installations around Wellington. But, I didn't know about these ones. On another note, I love the snow covered Rimutakas in the background.
Glad you noticed the snowy hills! Did the vlog that day especially to catch them, but wasn't sure how well they showed up.
There is an old air plane crashed up in there a bit deeper. Crashed in the 40s was missing until the 80s
Yes, I think it is Tararualite who has a blogpost on how to find it. It sounds like it would be a really big day tramp.
ta for your videos, I'm always looking for new lesser known trails in the tararuas that might be worth a trip :) looks like following your vids will be a good source. cheers
Cool. Hope you find some to your liking.
Wow i shot my first stag on the last grass clearing. 32 years a go..it you go south up th main ridge there is a hugh grass clearing ..it was called ninty acres..it was all farmed once...you can head to Oriwa ridge ..or theres a track the leads back to the river crossing...it was called terrys horse track..from when Terry Barber lived up kuku east road and he would ride his horse all through there.. even as far as otaki gorge and back...lots of hunting memories for me there ...
Thanks for the info. It's a shame there's not much record of all this as I find it fascinating. The traces of the old tracks are getting overgrown and might be gone in a few decades.
@@mapalone the beams of the brigde crossing was still there back then..and if you go sright at the forks you will find the old concrete pile for the steam mill ...
I was there 2 days ago Just missed ya
thanks for making this vid, will be checking this one out for sure.
used to live in that house at the end there. Its a nice little loop.
super helpful vid. I'm looking to start doing some beginner off trail soon and its really handy seeing what the terrain is like in various areas.
It's quite a lot of fun when you don't just park your brain and follow a track. And when you're not sure where you are and the stress levels rise, you don't even notice you're tired!
I've been to that shelter before. Wouldn't want to stay in it, lol. There is another former hutt site if you head up the Dobson loop (The Dobson Hutt).
Very nice trail. Thanks for sharing. sub & 👍24
I watched again and have a thought to share. In the mid to late 1980s the lower Tauherenikau valley just up stream from the Smiths Creek fork had much more extensive grassy flats than now. There was enough room for there to be groups clustered around fires from 3 tramping clubs: VUWTC (us) and TTC (old gits) and WTMC. We the VUWTC party were doing a 'rubbish pickup" tramp. The TTC group were having an Argentinian style cow barbecue on crucific style spits with huge fires... Which looked bloody weird from where we were. So ah the point being that the Smiths Creek Shelter v4 made more sense back then being adjacent to a well-used camping area. However "nature bats last" and the river channels which had previously wiped out a hut or two had other plans. 😀
That was the first time I'd really looked around the flats, and I was struck by the number of almost artificially level areas around the place, even up Canyon Creek, and the odd man-made item. Did make me wonder whether the army built a camp site there while they were building the track.
Great! I see there is some catching up I need to do!😃
Today I was just siitting around at home thinking "someone needs to upload a vlog about the Panatewaewae Stream to RUclips" and then Nekk Minute!...I enjoyed that!.😀
Serendipity...
That was interesting! Did you see any remnants of the first two Dobson's Hut? Hutbagger locates them right on point 705. You saw an 'anthropogenic' pile of rocks at the high point?
The high point looked a bit artificial but didn't know it was a hut site at the time. Have a vague recollection that there was something man-made there. It's on my list for a revisit to check for remnants of the huts.
Yessir! My first visit to the Ōrongorongo river valley made me think of the JURASSIC era. The impressive scale of the valley walls and their ancient species of trees like kahikatea (dates back to the mid jurassic period), an those gondwana remnants like tree ferns and nīkau palms really set the scene, especially around the Big Bend. Great vid as always!
You can easily imagine a brachiosaurus stripping rimu needles from the canopy.

Most of them probably do.
Hi hey did you get my no off that old post, when u over this way next
Enjoy your videos - thanks
Have you found the secrete hutt just down from tutawai?
No. I might have heard of it, although there are a few hidden huts, and I might be getting mixed up on it.
@@mapalone I don't want to mention it on here. But I trust we'll meet one day and we can talk.
@@neilwade4857 Yes. there's a code about secret huts isn't there, although I see Punga Lodge is now shown on maps.
Snowy hutt needs a visit too!
@hamishglenn4900 if you don't know you don't know. I'm not advertising it on the well watched RUclips channel
Well done.
Yes I remember the grove of large podocarp trees where the track down the true right of Smiths Creek turns into the track up the Tauherenikau River. At 0.53 that's Smith's Creek you are crossing. That was a wee issue with Smiths Creek Shelter 3 as trampers walking out from Tauherenikau River to Kaitoke on a very rainy day were faced with a compulsory crossing of the rain swollen Smiths Creek. Thanks I enjoyed your video!😀
Oh! I meant😀 true left of Smiths Creek!
Thanks. I sort of guessed the crossing would be the reason for the change of site. Shame, as the old spot is lovely, with maybe the nicest swimming hole in the Tararuas close by.
Cool vid. Ypu should explore more of the remutakas
I've had a Remutaka walk lined up for a month now, but it needs nice weather, and we haven't been getting it!

YT seemed to have got rid pf the messaging feature as far as I can tell (not an expert). I'm not on any social media other than YT and my email has my name in it (want to keep anonymity). Any thoughts?
That was a dagg! Ho ho ho!😄

Very interesting - I often wondered why its often called Odlins Rd. Living in Waikanae I occasionally take a trail bike into Waiotauru hut. Its a lovely area
Hey ru keen on doing a secret track in dry creek with a bigger waterfall than that 1 that u seen, its a 2 waterfall round trip on some bait trails and some bushbashing
You got me curious. My memory might be faulty, but is it the falls high up that you can see from the track on the eastern side? Thanks for the offer. If I did it, it wouldn't be secret though.
@@mapalone yes I think u might see it from other side of valley, it's 2 tier waterfall. Its not secret lol but I'm sure not many have done parts of it
@@bilbobaggans8398 Yes, I'd be keen to know how to get there.
Thank! I enjoyed that. We all need a steeper and muddier start to the Mt Climie track!
True. It is more aesthetically pleasing.
we missed.. errm.. noticing the sign on the fence.. and must have wandered off track and got "lost" ;)
ohh, wow.. very near the semi secret "Pack Track" - About 6 hours return, plus an hour exploring. Lunch at 800m among the perpetual mist and moss is ethereal!
And Puketaha is further along the ridge. Not one for YT as it is on forbidden ground, but there is probably still a marked track to it.

Cool. It's a beautiful spot. Shame it's such a drive to get there.
I enjoyed that! Good on you for getting out there in the rain! Too funny!😀
very cool just a question but does EE stand for something or is it just a weird name choice?.
LINZ often uses letters in if they're part of a group of trigs. EE is part of the Paekakariki group. Not an expert, so don't know why there's a group or why it's got a double letter instead of a single one.
@@mapalone thanks for the reply and great content as always.

yay youre back. im the guy that was talking about deraa. do you know about Mt Holdsworth im planning to do a hike up there with my mum if you have been on that please tell me what its like. also great content as always.
Holdsworth is very civilised. Well-engineered tracks and a lot of steps. You just need to be moderately fit. DoC pours a lot of money into the track as it is popular. The downside of course is that it gets busy, especially on a nice day.
Good on ya, Mappy

how long was the walk?
Took me five hours but that included a bit of casting around. Despite what I said in the clip, stick to the creek when you get to the pine forest as there is an overgrown farm track on the true left.
