Opposite take here, Ive played crystal dozens of times. I’ve always had unique teams. If you savior the rpg aspect and combine stadium 2 you can sink 50hours into Just the Johto region. Speedrunning crystal is like reading an entire shows Wikipedia

You know, when I wanted to watch a retrospective on a Pokemon knockoff, seeing the original inspiration for a Yakuza minigame was not on my docket.

Yo this video was pretty fun to watch man, though I wanted to say something about grinding in frontier: If you do it at dig sites…it’s horrible, buuut if you grind the seven scramble tournaments at the base, its not a nightmare. Sure its still boring but you get a lot of money and you get consistent experience…..nvm it still sucks like you said😭.

For context, the use of "he/him" in the English translation initially was just poor translation. In Japanese, it is ambiguous in the manual, and the use of pronouns are often omitted in the language because of contextual understanding. Unfortunately for translators, this leaves some creative interpretation, which can often lead to gender mistakes, among other things. Such is the case with Samus in the first Metroid. It was already programmed in to be the big payoff reveal that Samus is indeed a woman, but clearly whoever translated did not accomplish that in-game clear requirement to find that out. They just translated directly and interpreted how they saw fit. Sadly for them, they look silly now. haha. There's your context, from someone who is a huge Metroid fan, lived in Japan for over 10 years, is fluent in the language, and even met Yoshio Sakamoto one time in Tokyo. :)

What a great body of work, amazing video!

I think the ideas Frontier brought to the table were awesome, having different fossil parks on the scale they were with different interactible elements was awesome. Bone buggys were awesome, and I enjoyed the streamlining of the cleaning process. Obviously it had its many shortcomings but I think all it really needs to be is refined and integrate more from the originals and we'd be on track for absolute peak.

I hope this game franchise comes back. I'd love an open world Bone Buggy areas with aspects of Super Revivals, better graphics, better sound design and just a good return to an early Yugioh/Digimon esque story? I'd prebuy it in a heartbeat, just like if they returned Spectrobes to the world

Dynal, Duna, and Raptin have holographic devices that create their dinosaur forms, and we are told that they are prototypes. What if there was a 4th prototype, and it was on the crashed ship at Secret Island. And Dr. Diggins used this prototype to help create Vivosaurs! It would basically analyze the fossils and use the genetic information to create a hologram of the dino around the Dino Medal! Explaining why vivosaurs have to charge up FP before they can do anything, and why they dont need time to recover after battles! I would assume that the actual revival technology only actually works to awaken one from stone sleep

Apparently Beckles and Spinax are different, cuz while the new one is Becklespinax, the old and familiar one is Altispinax. I always thought both were Becklespinax.. Weird..

I remember having a copy of the first game with all vivosaurs at maxed level; even the silly little chicken nuggets I got early from the old Nintendo Channel on the Wii. It’s probably the proudest I’ve felt 100% a game on my own. I truly wish the series could come back after that stupid Frontier travesty, but I’m content with replaying the classics for as long as my hands can last. Sweet vid! You’re a real one putting this all together.

Plus this guy REALLY misses the point of cleaning a fossil if all he does is smash it to be considered "clean enough". To anyone not in the know, the more percentage of the fossil being clean, the stronger stats.

I got that event Celebi and I've been keeping it in the Gen IV games specifically to do that event again.

One thing I could not stand with Yellow version is Pikachu’s tail animation while walking. Your emulator removed this feature for the better.

As someone who grew up on the first two games. I still have found memerious of playing through them and trying to get the fire trex. Playing it with friends and so on. I would love to see a new one made, as you said in the closing. This whole video was like a trip down memory lane until the 3rd game since I never played it.

That last comment about the battle frontier is exactly why I never liked it. They just seem like afterthought mini games involving battling Pokémon that are not yours, or your own team not getting any sort of reward for winning. Adding a lot more lore and story could have helped a lot though.

Came in my recommened middle of work. Going to watch this whole video. Loved the games. Im 23 now and the DS for me was my favorite handheld like most kids. (Though the psp was significantly before its time.) These games made me obsessed. I would play for hours learn every odd team setup and comp. I loved learning the synergy between teams. The 'super battles' in my own eyes that were the post game optional bosses. All so good.
