The most perfectly placed whistle in all of railroad documentaries!
4449 is still my favorite steam locomotive and this documentary proves it
I love this version of “chilly winds”. If anyone can locate it anywhere let me know. 1:37:50
great
The first 10 seconds are actully from a piece titled "Foreboding," also by Richard Hill. I heard those notes in another TV show and had to dig into the origins. Like so many others, I had the Daylight Express VHS shortly after it was released and associate certain songs to this production. Of all train videos that was the best production ever. A narrator, history, epic music, the train crew, the journey, interviews of passengers, and every possible camera angle. As Jim Mitchell said in the video "It was to be the mother of all train shoots."
It gives me chills
Hey how are you doing? I actually have the same copy of this exact DVD. Who doesn't love Jim Mitchell? He is a great narrator no mistake about it. I love the 4449 and it's my favorite steam locomotive that is closest to my heart since I love steam trains a lot. Don't you like the 4449 as well?
Grew up with the VHS since I was a little kid, Definitely shaped how much I love railroading, SP 4449 is by far The Most Beautiful Train In The World, and is my number one favorite locomotive. I'll always look at 4449 with love and respect for the commanding grace and power she epitomizes. It would be fair to say my life would be much more different without this video in my life.
36:21 This gives me goosebumps every single time.
@secretstash24 The 12 year old me thanks you for posting this video.
2:38 Riding the Rails outro narration: "The 4449 Daylight is the only surviving engine of its kind that is still licensed to operate under steam. Thundering down the track, with her steel crosshead changing directions 11 times a second. You're watching a technology engineered by man that, for sheer weight and power, has no equal. Sadly, the Daylight is now a symbol for the rest of us to look back upon, a treasure. Left over from the days when steam was beautiful and riding the rails was a way of life. I'm Jim Mitchell; thank you for watching."
😊😅😮😢🎉😂❤ Haven't seen this film for a long time. Gjad just as i remember it.
The original song was sung by John Stewart
but i wonder who sang this version?🤔
@@SecretStash24 I believe it’s the same person that sang that version of fast freight
@@Vermontrailfanproduction Yeah, thats what I figured, though unfortunately we do not know the name of the artist/band. its a bit of Lost Media as it were.
Unfortunately, I just emailed Jim Mitchell, and he said that he recorded these himself, and that there wasn't a way for anyone to listen to them outside of the whole film.
@@JOEMAMA_534 damn I wish they’d go on Spotify bro there so good
Ha, I was at that Railfair. Really cool seeing how 4449 made the trip down to it.
I can't count how many times I rented this video from my small town library. Still laugh at Doyles orange story 😅
Loved renting this film from my local library as well! as well as The Ghost Train, They were right next to each other on the shelf. I miss those days
A very sharp looking consist. I believe we are fortunate that there are enthusiastic people restoring and running these trains.
Who sang the song "Go Bum Again" in this video?
It's called "Fast freight", unfortunately we do not know who sang this version.
April and May 1991.
Nice work. I don't suppose you can put Steaming up the new river gorge
1:49:53 [train chugging]
Daylight is Doyle McCormick's baby girl
Nevada Northern 40 appeared in Once Upon a Texas train 1988 with Willie Nelson
I've been a huge fan of this video since it's release. I'd pay good money to see all of the footage that didn't make it into the final "cut". There's so many miles that are unaccounted for. Thanks for uploading an amazing piece of my childhood.
The miles in California are very few mostly because of the California Highway Patrol not cooperating, which is unfortunate because that is the locomotives home state. Reference to the incident: 1:40:53
My favorite song i love singing too thank you so much for uploading that video
Could you make the end credits song its own video possibly?
30:00 I found the origin of 4449's MSTS whistle!
Yes yes yes 👍 👍👍👍👍👍 thank you thank you Iv been looking for this sence 1992 ..it was the first thang ever bought off the TV..... 👍👍👍👍👍
The end credits song the best I've ever heard.
So this is in Nevada Northern Railway but where’s the other steam locomotive number 93
since this footage is from around the mid to late 80's, id imagine they weren't operational yet, though I don't know the history of the restorations so I'm just spit balling here.
@@SecretStash24you're correct on that, NN 93 & the other engine were featured but were on static display until recently, #40 would be the only steamer operating until 93 would be restored
Thanks for the upload, I love NNR #40.
Hey, for anyone who wants the ending song, i found the closest version to it here, Secret stash, add this one to the playlist. ruclips.net/video/TUeHKbckzPg/видео.htmlsi=w58XOPGXVP8FHybu
just added, keep going to see if you can find fast freight!
You have no idea how happy it makes me, seeing people working to compile this soundtrack decades later.
I've never heard wheel slip from the Daylight. So that was an amazing treat for me!
Time stamp?

this takes me back to my childhood watching the vhs of this. thank you for uploading it
I finally found this. I used to watch this at my grandparent's house when I was little.
Definitely hands down the best documentary about the 4449 that I've ever seen, really well done!
Anyone know the music at 7:38 and 31:54? I've managed to find pretty much everything but those two.
The one at 7:38 is Cheek to Cheek by Steve Byrd, still havent found the other one tho.

I love the air horn!
Have a vhs recording of this and I’ll always think of my childhood. No I’m not crying your crying.
This VHS was given to me as a kid on my 10th birthday along with a H.O. Scale model of the engine and tender from my grandpa. We watched this film together 100’s of times, and I can’t thank you enough for the memories you returned to me. It’s weird to cry watching a train, but the times we spent together watching this were so special. Thanks again!
I got it for Christmas when I was 7 or 8. Though I had the 1 hour cut that was bundled with their VHS about Nevada Northern #40.
@@MachRacer4 I had the same one. I always remembered the music. For the age, the videography hold up so well, such epic shots!
An H.O. scale model of what ?

Any plans on uploading skyfire’s new river train with c&o 2765 (NKP 765) and giants on the rails videos?
When I was a kid, I watched the mail order VHS tape that's only a 1/2 hour long and always wondered why they cut it so suddenly after the train left Dunsmere, OR, never knowing there was a complete version. I feel like Jim Mitchell lied to me all these years...
You too, huh?
Dunsmuir, CA is along I-5 in Northern California near Mt. Shasta and around 100 miles before the Oregon border, I lived there as a kid and saw SP 4449 come through when the Freedom Train made its run in 1975. Our family later moved to Klamath Falls, OR since dad worked for SP and I saw SP 4449 fly past me a couple more times over the years, such a majestic locomotive, they did a great job of restoring and preserving her. Glad you have similar memories as I do.
I don't know why anyone would sell an abridged copy unless it was unauthorized. I do remember having another Skyfire video called Giants On The Rails, about an hour long with 10 locomotives, the Daylight being the last one, but they recycled ALL her footage from this video. I was hoping to see new footage. This Daylight Express video is the pinnacle of train videos, nothing else comes close. "The mother of all train shoots."
@@stupidsmart-phone6911 It's been years but I think my folks ordered it off an infomercial. One was Thunder on the Rails (NNRy 40, also roughly a half hour) and the other was the one mentioned. My only guess was they wanted something that would hold a 6 year old's attention. Both did their job of helping my train fixation along lol
Man this one is just beautiful.
My second favorite from the documentary, after "Lovers' Serenade". It gives a feeling of "The good times are coming to an end, but we had a lot of fun. And just because these good times are over, doesn't mean there won't be more down the line!"
Been trying for a long time to find the music that plays at 15:48, does anyone have any idea?
That would be called country picking by network music ensemble. I have a playlist on the channel that has all the known songs in this documentary and the daylight express documentary as well
Oh my god… it is beautiful!
Hey buddy are you going the one about nkp 765 or c&o 2765 amd new river train by skyfire to
I used to watch them wot my great grandfather all the time. It’s brining back memories. 🥹 thank you for whoever uploaded this !
Do you take requests
No, not at the moment, I have other projects to work on right now. sorry
I no longer watch the 30 min Thunder on the Rails now that I know this 45 min longer and more informative version exists.
Cool it's back on RUclips. But for how long? Even though I got it on dvd
This should hopefully be on for a Loooong time. The creators seem to be generous enough to not strike it. Though I am making this channel STRICTLY non profit. No monetization, no nothing. Just the videos.
@@SecretStash24 That's what a true railfan WOULD do. God bless you
This gives me childhood memories, i know i was born in 2003 but i remember watching this over and over again
