This is great stuff Ben, thank you so much. I’m just starting as an importer and will be looking to sell off my first pallet in the United States in the coming months (specifically restaurants in NYC), for price posting in NY state my warehouse/distributor is asking for single, 3, and 5 case pricing, which is basically asking me to build in discounts for larger purchases, what are your thoughts on this as it relates to your philosophy stated here?
Thank you for your thoughtful question! Lowering the price to make a sale is not the same as leveraging a tiered quantity discount structure. If you are selling mostly to restaurants in NY, I suggest you have a single and 3 case pricing - that is all you will need. And that pricing needs to be well thought out so you make money/profit. Very few restaurants will purchase 5 cases or more at a time so you don't really need that discount level. I hope this is helpful! Thanks for being a fan,

Hello! The answer to your question depends on which country you live in. Here in the USA, it also depends on what state you live in. Restaurants are not the only entity that buys wine. Again, depending on the state, grocery stores, convenience stores and package stores all buy wine. You can also sell wine online to consumers via a website. In what country and state do you want to start a wine business?
Is there something like libdip for Europe?
I don't think there is. At least, I don't know of any. Sorry! There SHOULD be, though!!
@@salisburycreative thats really disappointing. I want to sell exactly the wines which I know myself to be good but all the distributors I‘ve found only offer wine I don‘t think are the best. Is contacting the vineyards directly an option? Otherwise I don‘t see how to build the portfolio I want to offer.

To be honest, I don’t drink wine 🍷 at all, but my dad still have some wine bottles in the fridge for occasions. Other than that, he’s sober now.

As an upstart importer that is also involved in the winemaking process with Tuscan producers, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos and the insight you give into the business end. Like many, I think we're making some really nice wines that will soon hit the American market. However, producing great wine is not enough. If we can't sell them, then it's a useless endeavor. What we're trying to accomplish is bring quality product to market that punches above its weight. Super Tuscans and Bolgheri. There is a story behind this as there always is.
