Because not every guitarist has had the opportunity to explore an Envelope Filter, I have taken a moment to create a video detailing the Keeley Electronics Neutrino Envelope Filter Auto Wah's features. This video is intended for guitar players who are unfamiliar with this (type of) pedal and its progenitor, the MuTron III. In a far less expensive, bulky, antique package, the Keeley Neutrino is ...

Keeley Neutrino Compared to Beigel Tru-Tron 3X
Просмотров 18 тыс.10 лет назад
Keeley Electronics is releasing its own take on the venerable MuTron III. Mike Beigel, inventor of the original MuTron, also re-released his updated version of the same pedal. It's a tone adored for decades, and now can be had for a fraction of the size. I traded my original MuTron for a customized Leslie cabinet and then purchased this Tru-Tron ( #2 ). I have used it for months. I find it to b...
Keeley Neutrino Envelope Filter Auto Wah

A new Keeley Electronics release, the Neutrino. It has huge vintage MuTron III tones compacted into a modern housing. This video is not intended to explore its full range of capabilities, rather, to introduce the pedal set up the way I like to use MuTron type pedals: the Jerry Tone. I will upload a comparison video to the Tru-Tron later.

Simple if not too hasty comparison between the brand spanking new (and awesome) Tru-Tron3x by Mike Beigel and his previous smash hit, the Mu-Tron III.

Great sound!
@@christocaster this was done soooo long ago. It's still kickin' tho. Thanks!
Good stuff dude! I got one & haven’t really messed with this part of it. Very Bobby Weir for sure! 🇺🇸
Excellent video!!!
How is the volume clean up? And how well does it stack with buffers? Does it react well when after the wah? Thanks!
Is Frank Zappa an influence to you as a guitar player?
I have gone through heavy FZ phases, definitely. The Ampex solos (Xenochrony) made a lot of sense after repeated listens, even though they're artificially constructed.
Brilliant
3 cheers for a bomb shootout...
Original Mutron so much better.
I have owned both pedals being displayed... as well as funkzillah, boss aw3 dod etc. As strange as it may seem ,my favorite is the mxr m82 bass envelope filter, I found that out by mistke. Its never overly shrill or any unwanted volume chages. I haven't heard anyone else who does that. I strongly suggest the next time you pass a 🎸 store plug one in.Any info on if mxr\or anyone who writes/says it works for bass and electric guitars that would be incredibly kind And appreciated.cheers
I've heard people complain that the MXR Bass Envelope Filter doesn't produce enough volume at the output; what has been your experience of/solution for this?
Are the settings in the pic the settings you used during the video?
What are the chords you are playing in the back?

Any tab for that lick?
Your voice is amazing.
hybridsoul2 Haha. I practiced not gulping, smacking, shlorking or saying like or totally all day that day... in preparation.
Great comparison. Thanks for doing this video!
It took me a while to get my Keeley dialed in, but it does a mean Jerry! I'd still love to get my paws on one of those original Beigel Mutrons. Thanks for sharing this demo and your licks are groovy as hell!
Neither sounds like my Mut III, so far as I can hear here ... I prefer the mellower Neutrino, FWIW ...
Oh wow! This is so Jerry!!!
Sweet playing! You have some great chops. Thanks for sharing.
SOO funky man!
AHhhh ! So, it does have a reverse mode. The other demo I watched didn't show that feature. I thought Keeley stepped on my funk. I wantz m'funk uncut !
I set my Neutrino exactly the same and used my Tele and LP and I could barely get the envelope to open. I maxed the gain and all it did was add some distortion. Back it goes. I'll try a q-tron+ I guess.
joshie4330 couldn’t agree more. I had a QTron+ and it was awesome. Tried the Neutrino and couldn’t get a good suns out of it because it took so much gain to open.
That's a pretty common problem with envelope filters. Most people use them with guitars equipped with an OBEL to help the tone.
It's kind of odd that the LP wouldn't open the filter, does it have P90s in it? I ask because humbuckers generally have no problem with getting the filter to open. With the tele a straight up clean boost in front of the Envelope Filter should get you there
Hey man, that was a great jam! just watched it like 3 times!
This effect always makes me think of the song "What I Am" by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. Forever linked...
Dude! Before I looked to see what song it was going to be or even paid attention to who you were, I said to myself "Hey I know this tune...It's Old Shoe!". lol I freaking LOVE you guys man. One of the most underrated bands out there currently IMO. You guys melted my face at Summercamp last year. I immediately went home and bought all your albums. Would it be possible to do a complete rundown of all your gear and equipment if you could? That be beyond awesome! Thanks for all the great tunes and memories!
you ever restore the Mutron? the switch problem is because its dirty. replace electrolytics because they are out of spec and replace ceramic caps with metal films and silver micas. then it will sound brand new again
PhuckHue2 I never did. Wish I had, though!
great playing!
Mutron is the best! Excellent video.
Mutron...
I'm going to sell my neutrino and get a boss aw-3 or maybe qtron. The neutrino is too finicky. The aw-3 is reliably vowely without any fuss. Maybe it's not boutique, but it's predictable. (Any buyers on neutrino?)
+Matt Nagel Reverb_dot_com is a great place to flip pedals, just in case you haven't heard of it.
how much?
Sold it a while ago, sorry. But here is some useful info: I got the Q-Tron plus and I love it. It is way more flexible.
I have the neutrino and I think it has a pretty narrow sweet spot (it's very sweet in that spot though). To get the best sounds, I have to be on a certain pickup and in a certain portion of the fretboard. To get sweet sounds on different pickups and different areas of the fingerboard, I have to change the settings. IS THE TRU-TRON EQUALLY DIFFICULT TO DIAL IN? Or does it give you those mellow vowels on any setting?
+Matt Nagel I would like to know the answer to this as well!
+guitartonetalk +Matt Nagel. Hello gentlemen. I can't give an answer to this question because I've not owned the Tru-tron for years, probably since this free video was posted. My experience with the Boss, original Mu-tron, this pair of pedals is that they're all highly dependent on pick attack, pickup (single coil, which position), probably gauge of string and the weather! I ran a compressor and posted a video of the results before a Mu-tron III to address the issue raised here. The Neutrino is not perfect, but I like it for its size and the Jerry Garcia ballpark it gets me in. The Tru-tron is what Bobby and Trey used last summer. Not a bad endorsement there, by any means. I liked the Neutrino for its more neutral vocal quality as apposed to the Tru-tron's cut, but the cut is probably very good in live situations. To each his own. It's a great time for gear heads. Thanks for watching, etc.
Not only does the Mutron sound better, it is also built a whole lot better! Built like a tank!
MrCamelneck Agreed. I had a change of heart and sold the new one. (Traded the vintage one too. Regret only the latter.)
Nice video - I love this pedal, but I'll have to say, I have trouble getting my Strat to trigger without almost maxing out the gain. Upper register on high E and B string also have trouble triggering.
It does benefit from having a compressor in front of it, but so did the MuTron III. It's an extra expenditure, but well worth it if you really, really like the MuTron or this pedal.
+The Pedal Press That was my next step - we'll see if that helps.
do you use reverb ? or delay?, it's sound like spring reverb but repeat like delay .
+Boy Phakinai It was some setting on an Eventide H9, which is sold by now. It's a great pedal for experimenting with what you describe.
cool
I like the way that both pedals (ans especially the Beigel) softens the attack of the notes, in addition to the filter. It seems there is an slow-volume or auto-volume too. I don't there is one but it sounds like this. And it makes it more synth-like :-) Terribly 70s, wow. Thanx for the demo.
The vintage Mutron wins, hands down. Very smooth and clear.
flavomarginatus Agreed. The Tru-Tron sounded weird after the honeymoon was over. Sold. Wish I hadn't because now they're ridiculously pricey!
Not sure if it's the settings or the circuit itself, but the Mu-Tron is so much more controlled and focused across all notes, nothing is peaky or jumps out, midrange is liquid. Tru-Tron has a lot of uneven resonance, low mids get blurry and all kinds of peaky notes jump out aggressively. I'm not a player, I'm an engineer, from my perspective the Mu-Tron will sit perfectly in the mix (as it's doing here), the Tru-Tron will need a lot of tweaking to get it to play nice. Ah well, time to bite the bullet and get the vintage piece for my room...
The House of Kush Yes, I was pretty smitten with the new one as we are wont to be when we get new gear. But after a while, after the honeymoon, I sold the Tru-Tron and traded the Mutron.
Hi there. Nice feature demo! BTW, in case you hadn't found it out by now, WEM stands for Watkins Electric Music, a British company. Cheers.
This music just placed me in that lovely twilight state when you're waking up from a nice nap, all refreshed and everything.
Nice melody and feel!
Nice demo! I have one of these on the way.
I diagree. While I haven't heard the WMD, I think the Neutrino captures the sound much better than the Tru-Tron 3X. Just my opinion. They both sound great, but the Neutrino sends shivers up my spine. Waiting for Sweetwater to restock. I really like Beigels' Octave divider though....
www.wmdevices.com/superfatman.php You guys should check out WMD's filter pedal! Honestly, I have the Neutrino and LOVE it! But I got to check out the Superfatman, and it destroys! By far, it has the most options and is up the in sound quality as the Neutrino. The added benefit is that its got so many different sounds in it that its pretty incredible. I grabbed the Geiger Counter from this company and it freaking rules! Not a sales pitch at all, but a lot of folks havent heard about WMD so I thought of it as my civic duty to let people know about this guys stuff! Really on another level.
Great demo. The Tru-Tron wins hands down! I prefer my Tru-tron over my original Mu-tron. If you want that Jerry sound, gget it from the man who created it. Mike Beigel and Mu-Fx knocked it out of the park with this one!
+Darren Grimsby Yes! Trey and Bobby used one on their boards last summer. Pretty awesome endorsement there as well!
Where's the upsweep demo? I picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago. It's the most fun I had with a pedal in a long time! Really dig the Jerry tone!
Great demo. I have a Neutrino. My only issue (apparently common to many envelope filters) is the response on the high E. A note played on this string doesn't trigger the effect. I found putting a compressor upstream helped. Any other ideas?
+FeralPyg I got the neutrino and it is a very fickle pedal. I have never had a pedal so temperamental....a given setting only targets certain portions of the fretboard and favors certain pup selections, and that's kind of frustrating. When it's in the sweet spot, it is super sweet, but it's a narrow sweet spot. I'd like to know if the Tru-tron is equally tricky to dial in.
+Matt Nagel Not sure. I sold it some time ago.
Priestfilms what amp/guitar are you using in this video. Such amazing tone.... Please let me know?
+Joshua Kaufman I'm sorry, Joshua. I can't remember. It may have been a Matchless Chieftain. Definitely a Strat, though.
Agree with your statement that the Mu is slightly quacky compared to the Keeley in this example. I prefer the Keeley big time. Its a subtle difference, but to me its very clear, especially on the overdriven parts. The Keeley never seems to get 'hard' sounding. Sold.
Thanks. I have this pedal, and never could get the setting right. How do you hook up a expression?
It was finicky, for sure. I haven't had this pedal for probably five years. I use the Keeley Neutrino now.
Both pedals sound great though I prefer the Tru-Tron overall. My only complaint is pedal makers using blue LED indicator lights.
I have #002. Sounds great in my fender 65 reissue and laney lionheart. One thing I noticed immediately was that I didn't have to screw around with the amp's bright switch or mess with the guitar tone knobs very much.
