I've sometimes wondered if the recurring role of the bad singer mayor's daughter was inspired by the real life example of Harry Truman's daughter Margaret Truman singing a recital in D.C. and getting a bad review in a Washington newspaper. The president hand wrote a nasty letter to the reviewer threatening to punch him in the nose over panning his daughter's singing. The paper happily published a photo of the letter, thinking it would make Harry Truman look bad, but as time went on, it endeared him to the public.

What an astonishing career. Such a great child performer in film and then a huge TV career from child to adult - THEN to move into production and directing with such skill. All the time remaining respectful, hard working and professional. The book written by him and his brother Clint about their father is a great read. He instilled an amazing work ethic into the boys but also did his best to keep their lives stable and nomal. A great family that simply never fell into any of the dangerous traps of stardom.
