FFXII is a better gameplay experience by far. I personally also enjoyed the story of 12 more, but I can see why others didn't, as the story does have points where it falls off, or meanders along. It suffers from its lack of solid, main overarching villain.

FF12 battles took a long time. characters do little damage.

Another thing that alot of ppl dont know is,that the writer of the Bo2 story is the same writer of Batman Dark night which is the best Batman movie. why the story is so good and obviously Treyarchs own contribution to the game as well.

FFXII is my favy FF game.

I remember playing these games for the first time "way back when" I liked X, and was pleasantly content with XII. The attempt at a higher brow plot was a refreshing change form the same contrived and cliche'd stories. It did fall flat on its face many times, but I like it. Hell. I like them both. I like all Final Fantasy games Except Tactics and IX and XIII. I don't know why, but even a couple decades later, I replayed VIII before playing IX. I just never had the urge to play it.

12 was chasing the MMO combat trend and that had inevitable consequences, especially when 11 was already an MMO so you could play that for a real FF MMO. Or World of Warcraft which was popping off big time in 2006. FF at the time had huge pushback against changing the ATB turn based battle system so that soured most who saw that and decided to pass. FF12 also has a darker more realistic fantasy aesthetic which separates itself from the more stylised colorful worlds Final Fantasy is usually known for.

I've played both, and for me it's simple. It's two reasons. One, the strength of the story and the bond it creates between you and the characters. FFX arguably does this better than any of the Final Fantasy franchise. FFXII tries, but doesn't even come close. I can barely even remember any of the characters names. The second reason is the graphics, and maybe this is personal to me. The prettier a game's graphics are, the more it loses in charm. The less of a connection I feel with it. Every single game since FFX (excluding 11 and 14, and 16 which I have yet to play) have been nothing short of rubbish, with 15 being probably the worst video game I've ever had the misfortune to engage with. The FFVII remake, which I was so looking forward to, is a close second. I couldn't be paid to play it.

I think that the terrarrian would have worked better instead of the fortnite skin because Terraria is also a survival-sandbox game.

As someone who has played both games multiple times I need to explain why FFX is better than FFXII. FFX: -Story was insanely well written and made me push to play more to see what happens next. I felt so invested in that story, I truly felt the emotions that Tidus was having by the end. -Tidus, Wakka, Lulu, Yuna, Auron, Kimahri and Rikku are well written interesting characters. Yes even Wakka. I would even argue that Yuna is probably the best written and stronger female character than any of these bossgirl characters we see nowdays. -Even side characters like Jecht and Yuna's dad were interesting and you wanted to know more about their journey 10 years ago. -Seymour albeit a bit of a textbook villain he did made me hate him, which is usually good sign that you are writing a villain correctly. -Battle System was solid. An enhanced turn based combat with more options than usual turn based games. -The sphere Grid was peak, no other level up System comes close to it, the only one I would argue might be better would be the one in PoE. -Itemization was peak, every item was useful and a lot of them could be used in battle. You could also combine them with Rikku and hope for a good spell. -Getting an Aoen was special and always left a mark in the journey. They all have interesting designs, especially Anima. -The world of Spira seems to be well thought out, with the city Luca in the middle where everyone comes to play Blitzball. The end of the world being Zanarkand while at the same time being the start and the end of your journey. Meeting Zanarkand for the 2nd time hits you emotionally. -I would rate the music X/X Compare that to FFXII: -FF12 where I have no idea what the names of the characters are because they are so forgettable. The only one I remember is Balthier and Fran, everyone else was kind of just "there". In fact I would say that the side characters in this game that you play briefly are way more interesting then the main characters which is pretty awkward. -The License System was stupid, artificial gatekeeping for equipping armor and weapons... -Battle System was complete garbage, I am sorry but I don't want the game to play itself. What's the point of playing a game where u do literally nothing? -The Aoens are forgettable, there were some cool designs but again... I can't rememeber a single name nor how they looked. -The main villain is a budget seymour, I don't rememeber his name nor his motivations. There were some good stuff that I liked in FF12 though: -I actually liked the villains designs with the big bulky armor, I don't remember their names or personality though... -The hunting system with the guild was pretty good imo. -New magic spells -The environment was well designed and the map felt more open. -I really liked the dungeons and mystery around finding new hidden places. -I would rate the music XII/XII

Excellent vid, dude. As a longtime apologist and critic alike for both games, your analysis is very solid. I laughed out loud several times, too. And as a speedrunner, I'm glad that you included the snippet about Traveler being situationally very valuable. I'm actually old enough that said technick was routed in while I was the main router for the game outside of Japan (I also did the initial Order of Ambrosia/100% route too... which was about 10.5 bears at least). Anyway, I only have one minor correction of any significance: effect capacity still exists in TZA, but it is tripled, from 8 to 24, meaning you can cast three Scathes (for example) at any given time, barring what any other character or enemy is doing - functionally basically irrelevant, so yay. Beyond that... yeah, RIP Drace, she was too good for her station.

I recently started playing FFX again. About 12 hours in and I am reminded at how bad some of the direction and writing was. Were you to try and make that game today, no changes to the story or script; it would be a 4/10. Some of it is still a product of the time for (J)RPGs, but you have characters like Shelinda walking in to places like Guadosalam, only to somehow have gotten ahead of you on in to the Tuunder Plains, the complete opposite way she was traveling. I know that's minor, but there are points where scenes or dialogue ends in terrible ways. That's to say nothing of how you have to run around like a chicken, trying to figure out how you advance a scene by interacting with everything and everyone. I'm trying to give it a fair shake, since I shelved the game after I saw the sphere grid (I still think it's dumb) when compared to the masterpiece that was Final Fantasy IX, the pinnacle of the PS1 trilogy. That's a hard act to follow, when even FFIX, in my opinion, was outshone by The Legend of Dragoon, for best PS1 RPG.

I still like 12 more.

I wonder if the reason why XII's story gets more love these days (compared to before ZA came out) is because upon its release everyone was still going at the Star Wars prequels for having a lot of political intrigue, which kinda started a ripple effect where people would complain about similar themes in other media. Whereas nowadays in-universe politics is a pretty common and appreciated thing in fiction, especially in the fantasy genre

I can hardly remember any of my 12 play through. I let my friend borrow the game, he said my characters were way over leveled and that I hadn’t done any side quests or altered the gambits

10 was a more accessible story, with a very Hollywood style of narration and storytelling.

Final fantasy X is a true "Final Fantasy" it's a story about moving on from loss a theme that is constant in the party and ending the fantasy of long dead civilization. Final Fantasy 12 is about complex political story from the point of view of ordinary people. Amazing world building and world to explore, I just wish it doesn't play like online game.

I've played FFXII about 5 times now and I still don't understand anything that happens in the story or can describe a single character trait of any character....except every character is vaguely snarky.

I was always behind in console generations, so we picked up a ps2 and FFXII in 2008 and absolutely loved it.

I played FF10 plenty back in the day but playing it now feels like a walking sim, going down one very tedious linear road the whole time. FF7 was always my fav but 12 has caught up over the years, I didn't like it at first but it's a grower

Great video. Played and finished FFX in the early 2000s and loved it. Never played XII even though brought the game many years ago for a few dollars. Skipped most of your video after the 5th minute so didn't see any of the spoilers until I play XII first.

For me, I hated the FFXII battle system, Vaan felt like a boring Zidane, Penelo was annoying, and Ashe was boring. The only aspects I liked were Fran, Balthier, the Judges, aaaand no I think that’s it. I would’ve preferred to have watched FFXII as a movie. Meanwhile, FFX’s battle system is still my favourite, each character has a reason to care about them, the summon system was exciting and new, and the whole atmosphere - story, music, locations, colours, graphics - all made FFX a joy to play.

1:36:06 THANK YOU so many ppl overlook this sceene when saying "vaan isnt the story hes just there for it" but this exactly is the point he chose to do so. easyly implyed by the fact that befor this point, whenever ashe saw rasler, vaan did too, proving that the occuria draged him into this as basicly a replacement for ashe if she wouldnt have budged, tho with THIS exact sceene, he cut himself loose from that and therefor couldnt see their illusions anymore, coz even the allmighty gods knew "ye, no matter what we do, he aint gonna bite anymore" 2:54:39 ye but the death bringer army is only step 1, after that, u need to get to close to zalhera where 2 chests can be found, capable of containing a Dragon Armor (3rd best armor in the game) and a Mitra (top 5 strongest hats), then use these to head into nabudis with lvl 20 to get the Zodiarc Spear right after finishing Raithwalls xD (figured that one out when i was 13, boring summer at the grandparents but i brought the guidebook and theorie crafted)

the answer is simple, X is the superior game in pretty much every regard. better story, better character, better system. X was also ALOT of people's first FF game. that's not me saying XII is a bad game, it isnt, its just not as good as X.
