Trying to Grow A Giant Pumpkin in the High Desert part 1 (2024)
Hello again! I was hesitant to post any content leading up to this summer regarding my attempt at growing an Atlantic Giant Pumpkin. This year's seed is a 966 Engel 2023 (840 engel 2022 x 1461 Rodebaugh 2022) grown in approximately 340 square feet patch.

How To Make a Raised Bed Garden-Time Lapse
For the ABQ sun, that's really a good sized plant!
@kristinel6352 thank you so much! I should be posting another update this week
Build a second container with drip tubing so you can can double the reservoir size and you can fill both from second tote.
I tried hydrogel will kill the plants roots system as it will not allow any oxygen, also when it is in contact with soil it releases the water and dissolves as soon as it comes in contact with calcium in soil. So there is no agricultural usage and don't benefit in any agricultural . Also if you use chemical hydrogel it will pollute the soil and healthy microbes in soil will die. So friends research properly and don't buy any hydrogel products
Do you increase ppm level from seedlings to flowering? Or it's the same from the start
Yes increase ppm after seedlings to flowering. i use about 50% strength nutrients throughout the life of the plant, given how much water outdoor kratky plants drink, i felt that any stronger of feeding would burn the plant.

This video is awesome! 😊
Hi sir 1kg how much
❤
Your garden looks nice, 👍.
Rolly pollies beat up my giant watermelon plants! I used DE to stop it at that moment I found it but haven't stayed on top of it
You need a float valve in a separate 5 gallon bucket that is fed from a larger reservoir of solution.
the goal was kratky hydroponics, not dwc, rdwc or dutch buckets. my house has no power outlets for outdoor use, so i built my goals around using no outdoor power for hydroponics, which worked great
@@albuquerquegardening3004 Kratky, used a float valve container attached to a solution reservoir barrel to keep his grow tank at a set level, so he didn't have to manually refill his tanks daily, it was gravity fed.

Wish me luck! Growing a pumpkin San Francisco
best of luck to you! my attempt this year was not successful
Do not give up! 😎
My vine tips are all yellowing and dying, there's no recovery for them
I know it’s a bummer when you put so much into growing pumpkins and have a disappointing season. You just make corrections and hope it will work the following season.
in the field watermelon needs about 1liter of water per plant and per day after the first month , i wonder if it's the same amount of water in hydroponics
this plant for sure drank more than that each day. I think that has to do with soil slowing down the nutrient/water update. water and food are just more easily available to the plants in hydro, so it grows faster. thanks for checking out my content!
1 watermelon 🍉 🤣
It was delicious
Hy😘❤🤝
I get a few burns on my watermelon vine. They're so vigorous though they recover. Probably most aggressive plant I seen grow aside from fruit trees
I'm growing an atlantic giant pumpkin plant via this same method this year! i have a video up about my progress! thanks for stopping by and i hope you enjoyed the video!
Squash bugs decimated my pumpkin patch last year. I hate them things.
I've been finding a lot at a time, and then one or two every day or so. Found about 11 on Friday alone!
Have you tried using DWC for a pumpkin plant? I know it's late but I'm going to start one and learn for next year. Im afraid that the plant will drink to much water and I'll be left with hit nutrients using kratky due to the heat here in central Texas. Any input would be appreciated.
This plant in the video is a pumpkin plant. Last year I did this also, but had I overfed and killed my plant before the pumpkin got to be 10 pounds
are you measuring ec/ph this year?
😝 🄿🅁🄾🄼🄾🅂🄼
The shade cloth I’m using right now blocks about 40% of this sunlight, I have found that to be just about perfect for where I live.
desert can be harsh on plants, thats for sure. my 30% is coming in today and it could not be a better feeling to get these switched out!
@@albuquerquegardening3004 👍
Those bugs where a nightmare for me last year!
Looking good. My plants are going in the ground tomorrow night.
nice!
Hooray pumpkins
They look great! It’s nice to have another giant pumpkin grower in New Mexico. I currently have three giant pumpkin plants, unfortunately one of them is a double vine though.
Thank you! What is your goal for this season?
@@albuquerquegardening3004 last year my pumpkin was 214 Lbs final estimated weight on 200 square feet. This year my goal is a thousand Lbs on 800 square feet per plant.
@@jakesgardening2622 best of luck to you! I'll be following your progress. I hope to get my pumpkin over 300 pounds. Anything more than that and I'll be happy
@@albuquerquegardening3004 thank you, and good luck to you two.
hows the tree doin?
It's booming! I'll be posting an update tomorrow
@@albuquerquegardening3004 awesome look forward to it!
How long does it take for them to fruit?
i wouldnt soak them for a day myself, i would recommend soaking for just 1-2 hours
Sorry for your loss. Mental health is just as important as any health. Your garden can help with your depression. Your yard is perfect for gardening! Sounds like you have a perfect plan for this growing season!…*
how did it turn out?
terrible. the gel did not allow for any water uptake for the plant and it died after a week
I know my back yard is a mess right now. Depression sucks(dad died a few days before the first clip in this video), but we'll get it cleaned up real nice!
CAN USE A DIAPER AS WELL
I don't suggest that. Diapers aren't food grade/aren't agricultural products
I want my plant to grow no taller than 20 inches. Top the top. Then put it to bloom how much or how do you meadure master blend to bloom???
20 inches of growth can happen fast. i suggest using a food scale to measure Master blend 3 part fertilizer, half strength to not burn/overfeed the plant. keeping the plant below 20 inches tall is tricky though. best of luck to you!
If this is about tomatoes, there are interesting varieties available. I have a couple plants that won't grow taller than 2 feet before flowering and growing suckers out. But it's highly dependent on the market. People here usually grow in very limited spaces like balconies, so small varieties (with equally small fruit of course) are a huge chunk of the sales.
Whasze are the net cups in the pails. Great results!
Nice video!
Stay tuned for a bigger attempt in 2022! Please like and subscribe for more updates
I don't think this will work, meaning that you will not have a big plant and harvest fruit.
you are correct
What if you use orbeez in place of hydrogel?
Orbeez will break down after about a year and will leech out toxins, killing your plants
Hydrogel is of course not a SUBSTRATE! Hydrogel is introduced into the substrate (soil) before planting and when watered with water in which fertilizer is mixed, the liquid is absorbed by the hydrogel and the plant has access to water and nutrients all the time without stress when there is too much water and too little over time. The war is much better and the harvest much more plentiful. The hydrogel is biodegradable and stays in the soil for up to eight years. It then decomposes. Not harmful to the environment! Greetings from Ljubljana EU SLOVENIA
yes, this is why i layered the hydrogel with hydroton. This was an experiment. Thanks for checking it out!
I may suppose this things are never eaten right?
since they are bred for size, they tend to be more watery and not very sweet or anything. My dog got a little piece and enjoyed it though
so sorry for the loss of your fur baby,
thank you
Hi your pumpkin shape is so awesome! And I hope your second guy gets bigger!…* :) I am growing a giant this year as well and I’m also in New Mexico. I don’t do professional RUclips videos but I did do a video this morning show how big he is so far if you wanna check it out :)
Looks good. I agree needed some aeration in the bucket. Wife and I growing a giant ourselves just east of you in east mountains.
Nice! About how large is it at this point? Plans on entering it into the fair?
@@albuquerquegardening3004 it is our first try at a giant but it is around 75lbs right now. Maybe next year for the fair.
@@PokeRamus I'm right there with you. If anything it may be worth talking with some of the other people that enter. I'm really undecided as well
Well you’ve got a pumpkin that’s bigger than mine so far.
thank you, but i have a feeling yours will take off past mine in no time!
@@albuquerquegardening3004 thanks!

New Sub here. Very impressive that you got a pollination and growth on the DWC setup with an AG plant. I'm a giant pumpkin/vegetable grower for many years. I also experiment with hydro projects. I had massive success with indoor fogponic cucumbers, I'm sure you would enjoy the video I made documenting the start to finish results. I could give 2 tips that might of saved your plant. 1. Aerate the growing solution with an airstone. 2. Bury the bin in the ground so the lid is level with the ground. This will drop the temp of your nutrient solution dramatically and give a much better chance at healthy roots. DWC roots want to be cold and aerated. Just my thoughts! :) great job man!
Thank you for the input and I am in agreement. I almost bought a solar powered air stone/pump for that reason. I like the simplicity of Kratky, and honestly with how much this plant was drinking daily I am a little okay with the fact that something went wrong considering how much food it consumed. Next year though i think I'll go in ground-DWC
