Imagine if they had included the Master System original versions, in full resolution, AND updated the Game Gear only titles to the same MS resolution as well. The collection would have been worth buying just for that! Instead, it's basically worthless compared to any standard Master System emulator.

I’m not going to argue with how catchy the ice cap zone music was and launch base zone and even carnival night zone but as someone who grew up playing sonic 3 with the OG soundtrack the semi new music just makes those zones feel out of place like your not getting a feel of a carnival, ice cap, or a base I feel sega really did a disservice not adding the original music your not telling me they couldn’t have at least given us the option to switch between OG music and the prototype music?

Reused levels are an interesting topic, especially now that Sonic x Shadow Generations revived the discussion around it... I don't think my opinion is unpopular, or a hot take by any means of measurement, but I believe the real issue is in the lack of innovation... that aside, I really like when levels are reused to add something new and interesting onto them, or even keeping them similar with the difference of approaching them with a completely new perspective, like Green Hill in SA2 and Gens. My issue with Frontiers isn't really bringing back 3 levels, it's the nigh-absolute lack of variety in themes, all islands share the 4 level aesthetics when they could've easily used each a set of its own.

I don't get why they didn't just alter like 2 seconds in the Carnival Night music to remove the small bit that's actually sampled from MJ, the bulk of the melody is in public domain. Too bad the same can't be said for Ice Cap though, it's pretty much a complete midi cover of Hard Times.

hey! loved this video :). Just wanted to also note that SEGA did release Sonic 1 and 2 a few times for consoles with their Sega Megadrive / mega collections. I had a disk of these games when I was a kid. I'm sure other commenters have noted this as well, but I couldn't see it so wanted to add it in.

It's easy to see the programming error in Sonic 3 that has his face only appear in the first slot when he's the player, but instead will show the character you're playing as both as first and in the same place in the rotation if you are anyone but Sonic. Crazy that they haven't fixed that.

I think the peel-out was in Sonic Chaos, also it’s *sort of* in Lost World but not really, you can just kind of charge up a run in place, but it serves no real purpose

Played a lot of sonic 2 at the master system as a kid, pretty sure you get 10 rings if you finish a level with a multiple of 10 rings.

Here’s a fun glitch I found out, if you finish sonic 3 and knuckles on sonic origins (not story mode) it gives you an option to continue as knuckles but when loading into sky sanctuary, it loads up Sonic’s zone for it and after sky sanctuary, you can go to the death egg and finish the game, but when finishing the final fight, it loads up knuckles’s finishing cutscene because you’re playing as him.

Thanks for this. Very interesting stuff. I dont like the new music, i liked the originals better with the more hiphop feel. I'd be cool with the newer ones if they weren't so cheesy sounding. I hate when they take shortcuts in any remaster or remake. The attention to detail intrigues me, so I appreciate videos like these. Well done!
