Pensioners do a boat
Великобритания
Добавлен 3 июн 2023
Two over 70 somethings buy a 24ft yacht and set about restoring it to sailing trim. It's an Achilles 24 of 1978 (?) vintage. Old but not as old as us two ! Any creaks or pops in the videos are probably our aching bones and joints.
Why do we do it ?
Well for most of my life I wanted a boat. Be it yacht or motor boat. The usual constraints of the need to work and earn money came first.
It wasn't Lynn who wanted a boat but me, she's coming along for the ride and we do this together.
Life changed and I found myself in Devon, then opportunity arose to buy a yacht that I could afford from my savings.
Actually, after I negotiated the price it left me with enough funds to buy the paint, consumables, etc. neccessary to do the works on the budget I had. 'Marine' on a purchase means it costs far more than normal items :-)
As pensioners we have very limited funds so sometimes we 'make do'. Restoring what's there rather than replacing with new. We do our best. Unless it's broken of course.

Sorry about portrait mode but this was taken on a mobile phone. Taken one fine day between bouts of rain and high winds. We haven't been down to the boat in a while.

A nice display when I was visiting Falmouth, Cornwall. The UK Coastguard slimmed down its service around the coast and closed many watch stations. After an incident where a vessel was in difficulties right under a closed Coastguard station the NCI was formed. It is manned by volunteers at strategic points often original coastguard lookout stations. They perform a service to the boating communit...

( Sorry about portrait mode. I used my mobile AND held it landscape but somehow it didn't turn out that way all the time ! ) I suddenly lost the ability to view the CCTV camera onboard. How to convert a pull start Yamaha 25hp two stroke to an electric start system. This is part one and part two will follow when I obtain further parts. The two batteries on board failed and wouldn't take a charge. The first indication we had was we lost the camera feed as the wifi router powered down. Fastening down before the storm

With the storm imminent it's time to fasten all lines and secure the boat. In its winter mooring the boat was undamaged after the storm. Lots of areas around Torbay were damaged. I took a video on the seafront at Paignton but didn't want to get too close to the sea.

We've had the inflatable and engine for a few months now. We decided on a fine October day to take it onto the River Dart from Totnes heading towards Dartmouth. Lynn was worried at 5 knots never mind faster 😍 It was a beautiful day and the scenery, wildlife and the river were beautiful, we had a g...

I wonder if you could help me, please? I actually found this particular model while I was walking along my coastline. I've been able to charge it up; it appears to work and it's showing a full display, but have no idea what to do with it, or how to trace the owner. What would you recommend I do with it?. Many thanks.
There's no registration for these things so no way really to trace the owner. I'm surprised you found it on coastline unless someone came ashore in their dinghy and lost it. They are short range devices so not much traffic. Channel 16 is the distress and calling channel and that probably has the most traffic other than that it's probably of no use to you. Mainly used as a method of calling marinas and such from a boat or used as a safety radio for a kayaker/canoeist. I would suggest you take it to a local marina they will try to find the owner or at least put it to good use. Rob
@@Pensionersdoaboat: Hi,Rob. Many thanks for your swift response, and the valuable information you've provided. As you suggest, I'll take it over to our local Marina. Pete.
nice to see you posting again. question about your wifi cam on the back of boat , how has it performed , i bought the same one after seeing your vid about it, i have been testing mine at home before putting it on the boat, but on home wifi, how much data a month is yours using so i can gauge roughly what data card to get thanks.
I don't have it 'on' full time. I check it six to seven times a week but it's in movement detection mode otherwise. It will send an alert if someone gets very close to the boat. It's only gone off once and that was a plastic bag being blown around deck. (not mine) I have a sim only deal from ID Mobile which gives me 8gb for £6 per month. I do have an 80gb per month sim from them which I have in my phone and that's £10 per month with unlimited texts and calls. I don't actually know how much data the camera uses but it has never been an issue, battery life on the camera would be stressed at full time viewing. I'm making a boat battery monitor system using Arduino which will report fluctations in voltage back to my phone via the wifi. Now that will test the data usage. Rob
@@Pensionersdoaboat ee do a 120gb preloaded data card for £60 i was going to get that as its for a year , no contract , i imagine the modem for wifi would use a bit
ID mobile is a one month contract so I use that. The modem shouldn't consume data unless something acceses it.
Nice to see a post from you two 👍
Hopefully more to come. The weather has been so bad when we have had the time to go down it's not been worth it.
What is that grey boat to the right of your boat in the video? Your sailboat looks much more loved.
@@orileymcspadden9116 I believe it was mentioned in one of their first videos - if memory serves me right it’s abandoned & in a right state.
Not sure which you mean. The boat to starboard is a long term project by a chap on a motorcyle who comes down when he can. It's actually useable compared to how it was. He continues a bit at a time. The boat to port is now derelict really. I mentioned it in the hull painting video. It belongs to the house right in front of it. It's for sale. The tale is someone came along and bought it for pennies on condition he did it up. He removed the vintage engine and took it away for 'refubishment'. Then one night all the bronze portholes and fittings dissappeared. Needless to say he wasn't seen again. It has various openings to sea where planks have parted and it doesn't float BUT it makes a nice handy platform for us to put things on whilst we are working.
Where is she who must be obeyed?
She's there but in the background watching that I do it right !
Starbrite black stain remover.
Well done, excellent video. You covered everything I needed to learn for my upgrade. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Sorry you are having to sell the boat. Hope you manage to get out on the water somehow.
We have had various setbacks, not least the atrocious weather. Rain, rain, rain. I planned with a friend a suitable date, tide, weather forecast in order to get a sail in BUT complete weather change overnight with high winds and heavy rain. Next opportunity is in July. Meanwhile we are going to continue with the restoration painting.
Thanks for that run through. I've just ordered one, same price Marine Super Store.
Glad I could help
I have just bought mine from marine super store best vhf I have ever had

Thank you! Will do! Haven't finished yet so perhaps a few more videos
Sorry to hear, best wishes to you both from Scotland 🥃 Hope you continue to RUclips
I hope so too! A few videos left in us yet. Weather will play a big part.
Such a shame about the boat, but fully understandable given your health issues. Hope you find another project to keep you ticking over 👍 All the best to you both.
Thanks. We both realised how much we have aged lately. Covid was really bad at our age and has left us somewhat drained.
@@Pensionersdoaboat I retired last July. I worked in schools & had Covid a couple of times. Pretty sure it screwed me over & left me with long Covid. Not been the same since. Good luck to you both, hope Lynn gets her knees fixed.
Thanks. We are looking at various options for the boat. I've just paid the mooring till 2025 so some works etc will continue unless it sells. Covid is a long term thing after the initial sickness. It leaves you weak for months, I see the official time given is 12 weeks to be free of symptoms. It's the change in taste buds that I hated most, so many wasted meals. Lynn is ok, we are going on a weeks road trip to the Isle of Wight so will try to film some of it.
can I ask that where should I find the parts brake down, what you were looking in your phone?
I'll do what I can. These are the main components required, there's various sundries required like cables etc. If I did it again I woud use the next size down battery to starter cables. with solenoid, and regulator together (and the starter motor bracket also)
It looks like that 2 Accumulator charger isn’t doing anything as the positive input is disconnected. Might be worth looking into getting an MPPT charger/controller as a future upgrade if you add more panels as they’re more efficient.
The two accumulator charger is for an external input. It's original to the boat and not used. The new solar controller is a dual battery unit and constantly measures each battery and splits the charge to keep the batteries balanced.
Should I use a choke solenoid? Is it a must?
It's not a must but a convenience. You can leave the original pull choke in place and use that but unlike four strokes, two strokes need the choke off as soon as it starts.
Thank you so much, my motor is the same as yours, but I will pull the choke out when I start, cause I dont have the choke solenoid, plus I dont know how to fix it.@@Pensionersdoaboat
I loved your way to show us the installation, but two questions. The battery negative cable is on the starter motor negative edge? You didnt do any thing with the regulator just put another place?
Correct. The starter is a direct bolt on to the engine so carries the ground throughout. The regulator was moved and it's ground tag put under a suitable bolt head.
Where is Lynn?
If you look carefully you can see she's flitting about in the background. It's not really something she can help with and she has family commitments whilst I'm working on the rib. We have had such lousy wet weather we can't really do anything on Thetis except the emergency work I did on the electrics. We will be returning as soon as the weather improves.
You're doing a grand job...not easy to fit it all in with very little room. It will make starting the motor so much easier. 👍👍
Thanks. It is a tight fit in there but it's all in and the final video is now up. I could have made it easier by using 6mm battery cable instead of 8mm. It would have been perfectly adequate.
Welcome back!
Thank you so much.
Where have you been? I've missed your vid's. It's good to see you again.
Thank you. Well with the series of storms rolling into Devon it's been difficult to do anything !
Thanks for the update & a belated Happy New Year to both of you. If Lynn is like me, Winter cold plays havoc with the knees!
Thank you, same to you . Lynns knees are really giving her stick but we think it is just winter cold that's making them worse.
Roll on spring had enough of this 💩
So looking forward to warmer weather !
Thanks for great video but please tell what cleaning product you used ? I’ve just cut the old torn windows from our spray hood. I want to clean it before we have new windows sewn in.
I used a combination of products but the main one was EcoClean which I bought from a boat jumble. It was green in colour and claimed it was safe for the environment. 73s
So glad I found your channel! Wish you all the best in your adventures 😊
Thank you! You too!
😂 I have such a good laugh watching you two
Thanks, hope you keep enjoying the vids.
Let's hope it's a mild winter so you can keep us entertained 👍 I wrap a piece of string round the furled headsail to ensure it doesn't come unfurled.
With another storm (Ciaran) due so quickly after the last one I think it's going to be lively to say the least ! I have a strap but forgot to put that on. I'm not there again til December so it will have to wait to be put on.
That’s a great idea. What is the make of the camera and router.
The camera and router were from Amazon Camera IXOXTX Security camera outdoor wireless battery powered with solar panel. Router Huawei E5576 Battery powered wifi router (requires a sim card)
@@Pensionersdoaboat thanks for the info
Fingers crossed 🤞 we have a mild winter so that you get some more jobs ticked off the list 👍 Good to see you weathered out this storm.
Thanks 👍 It can have some mild days here so we hope to get some work done then.
You really need to tie that ladder off. I did not and fractured my arm and a gash in the head. I was lucky. 👍
We keep saying it needs a section of wood bolting to one side at the top of the ladder, so it rests against the stantion. If I fell it would be a muddy landing !
I am glad your boat is safe ,I would miss the two of you.
Thanks. It's pretty sheltered where it is.
Where do you moor her?
Well I usually moor Lynn up to the kitchen sink 😂😂
You can see why they may want to keep that private. Although it does look like a lovely creek.
Where do you moor her?
Boat's looking good 👍
Thanks, we're nearly there although weather has changed now.
“Goddess of the Sea” - nice choice of name 👍 I’d imagine that anti slip needs a couple of coats for best effect & longevity? She’s turning into a very colourful boat, love the red & white, baby blue isn’t to my taste, but it’s all in the beholders eyes 😎
Thetis was Achilles mother, the boat is an Achilles 24 hence the connection. The boat came with the name and is one of about 4 so named 24's. I looked at the pale blue when we first put it on and had doubts. The colour scheme is yet to be finished as there are areas of white to be added for contrast. It's only paint so it can be changed. Surprisingly the anti-slip works well as it's covering previous anti-slip. 👍👍
Nice one, I'm not sure how the Cloud connection is made, is it expensive?
Not at all. The router uses a SIM card which costs us £6 per month with enough data to log in loads of times on the CCTV and data for the Ipad wifi when we are there. It comes from ID Mobile which uses the 3 network and has always been reliable for us. I also have my phone with ID.
Personally I wouldn’t varnish the rubbing strake. It is the first thing to get scratched when coming along side then rain water will get underneath the varnish. I always use teak oil which can be reapplied as and when. Good work though. Best of luck with the refit. Ian
Thanks. Yes we considered later that maybe Tung Oil would have been better but it was one of the first things we did.
All that pumping will keep the old knee muscles in good fettle 👍 Lovely little trip out ‘just messing about on the river’…
Knees are going fast 😒 Day was superb 😁😁😎
Nice! In my experience, you have to use an outboard reasonably regularly otherwise fuel solidifies in the carb, blocks the passageways leading to unreliability (Which makes you use the boat less 😀). Enjoy!
Thanks for the info! Yep I hope to drain down shortly and set it up for winter.
Was looking forward to seeing Lynn in rubber. Nice little tender.
You and me both! She is very tender ❤️😂😂
I like the way you keep your good humour even in the face of injury. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks. we will keep going 👍
Looks like you had a fun day. The A24 is a great boat. I love mine! I find that it has quite a small turning circle. It makes manoeuvring like that in confined spaces easier. Good luck with it.
Totally agree! Once I stopped trying to turn engine it was so easy. I watched your videos when I first got the boat 👍
So glad to hear "I don't know love!" despite injury, you are still in love with each other!
Yes, Lynns fine. She was a bit shocked but we laughed about it later. 😍
I really enjoy watching your channel, keep up the good work. I wonder if we'll ever bump into each other on the water.
Maybe one day! We've been out in the small tender on the River Dart today as it was unseasonally warm at 23C !
Try using a heat gun on the lettering. It will make it much easier to remove.
Only problem is no power except 600 watt generator, not powerful enough for a heat gun. Besides, it keeps Lynn busy 🤣🤣
Good luck we like your videos 🇦🇺🪃🙏🏻😄
